5 comments about Architectural Graphic Standards, Student Edition, 8th Edition.
- Through 3 years I had this book while in school, it was an invaluable resource. As many of you know, the work done in arch. school is very design/idea based, and not necessarily rooted in a feasible final product. However, I strived to include as many true-to-life elements in my design, and this book got it done for me. Many standards and sizes, etc. that had my classmates scrambling around on the internet or looking through dozens of books to find were easily found in the index of this book. It eventually became a class resource for a couple semesters until people bought their own.
As a professional, many people's firms have a specialty or three. For instance, I work for a healthcare firm at the moment. However, as a student, you can run the whole gamut of different building types. Despite how far-out some of my designs were, the fact that they were rooted in current, workable building methods and systems that were detailed out helped me immensely when applying for jobs. Knowing the details and showing them in your design is not only good for your reputation, but good for ability as an architect.
I'd recommend this to many arch students if the price is right for you. I happened upon it at a time with the book (no CD) was around $80 or $90. Of the dozens of textbooks I still have, this is one resource book I know I'll be consulting for a while.
- Great book. Really Highlights the shortcomings of the modern addition of this book. I highly recomend this book for students and practicing architects.
- For over 70 years, architects have been using a valuable reference book, "Architectural Graphic Standards."
"Architectural Graphic Standards" is organized roughly per the CSI Masterformat divisions, including general planning and design data, sitework, concrete, masonry, metals, wood, thermal and moisture protection, doors and windows, finishes, specialties, equipment, furnishings, special construction, conveying systems, mechanical, electrical, sports, energy, history preservation, etc.
"Architectural Graphic Standards" has 1072 pages (9.6 x 11.8 inches large format) and numerous line drawings. This new edition has expanded and new content covering contemporary issues. It is a must-have for architects, landscape architects and urban planners, interior designers, engineers or any other building-related design professionals.

- I got this book for my cousin who just became an Architect in Ecuador. The cover was a bit damaged, but he was able to fix it my "making" a new cover. He is very pleased with the book. For the price paid, it was worth it.
- The reprsentation was not clear this is a reproduction of a 1935 published book. This is not usefull in todays building enviroment.

1 comments about Plumbing Practice Test Exam (Exam Preparation).
- Found it to be very helpful in preparing for the contractors exam. I was given an extremely short prep time before taking the exam and the practice exam gave me the heads up on what to expect. I'm pleased to say I passed the exam on my first attempt.

2 comments about Reading Architectural Working Drawings: Residential and Light Construction (5th Edition).
- Seller described the book as gently used, not missing pages. Book came used but with many pages missing. I started my class in architectural blueprinting, and I find half the homework I cant do, would not buy from this seller again.
- This is a very useful book if you are looking to draft something it is full of information on everything you will need to know.

4 comments about Architectural Detailing: Function, Constructibility, Aesthetics.
- An excellent book for architectural students and young professionals, now made better in the second edition. Expanded with more insight and expertise from Professor Allen augmented by Professor Rand makes it invaluable to readers. A must on every professional's book shelf providing the basic fundamentals and principles of detailing.
- This book is the thinking person's "Graphic Standards" (no slight to that book intended). But in this case, instead of handing you details, it teaches you how to design your own details. It is not only a one-of-a-kind approach but incredibly well-done, well organized, and beautifully illustrated as well. It is a guide to knowing why details should be designed in particular ways. It explains, in depth, what to think about when designing at the level of the detail. And the three case studies in the back of the book are worth their weight in gold. This book truly makes the point that detailing is part of the process of design. Get it, and keep it.
- As much as I like the author's "Building Construction", this book is not recommended. It is based on the premise that many construction details share common principles: shed water by using sloping surfaces, for instance. After a few such groupings are described, it turns into a tips and tricks collection, e.g., do rough work before finish work. It's not a comprehensive reference by any means. On the contrary, it's shamefully padded with many nearly blank pages. Enjoyable reading, nice drawings, just not nearly enough material to justify the price.
- This book is the recipe to designing architectural details. The book is divided into many small but concise sections each dealing with different aspects e.g, controlling water leakage, accommodating movements, providing structural support, forgiving details, etc. In each of these sections various solutions and stategies to deal with these aspects are shown with simple easy to understand diagrams accompanied by a brief explanation. A chapter at the end is dedicated to developing and designing the architectural details through choosing and combining solutions disscussed in the sections with illustrated examples.
This book is the essence to "designing" or merely to "understanding" architectural details. The structure and simplicity of this book makes it almost like a dictionary of architectural details. This book is suitable for students, practicing architects, and those who are interested in the detailing of architecture. Note: in my opinion this book is of a reference nature and not recommended for leisure reading.

2 comments about Observations for Young Architects.
- In 200 pages or so and generously illustrated with photographs of his work, Cesar Pelli had summed up a lifetime of his own architectural insights. His thoughts are very pragmatic with a careful balance of theoretical insights. This book really shows how architecture should connect to our past, our present culture, and to our future. It reveals his design process and the way he envisions, plans, and designs his projects. It talks about how materials are related to architecture.
His thoughts are incisive and demonstrate the importance of clear thinking in architectural work. In many ways, his book does not deal with all the academic architectural mumble jumble out there. It shows a very useful path for all "students" of architecture. I really wish more architects would write books like this one. Thanks Mr. Pelli!
- I found this book to be very insightful. In this book, Pelli says there are 8 "connections" that influence architecture: time, construction, place, purpose, culture, design process, constituency, and oneself. In each section of the book he goes into each in depth. Reading the book almost makes you feel like Cesar Pelli himself is actually teaching you about the profession of architecture.
