5 comments about John Fowler: Prince of Decorators.

  1. except perhaps the late Ms. Nancy Lancaster! Mr. John Fowler would not have been who he was if it were not for Ms. Lancaster, period!

Another reviewer said it best: If only our decorators of today can know the histories about such people as these, they would have a better direction of where they're going. This is my opinion of course. Let's forget about the word decorator versus designer. My gosh, real decorators of yesterday are doing the same things that designers are doing today! The term used is just different. Forget all that, and know the history of interiors.

John Fowler was an extremely talented, true creator in every sense of the word. He was good at everything when it came to beauty and function. Nancy knew the right people to uplift him to new heights, and she was a damn good decorator in her own right. These people created rooms; rooms that will never be forgotten. These were creators! Their exquisite taste only accented their natural talent. Henrietta Spencer-Churchill carries on their spirit very well, and I only hope to be as good as they! :)

One can be aristocratic and have poor taste. Money does not give you good taste. Taste comes from within, and has its own solid foundation. This is a great book, and recommend it to every designer student highly.

  2. I bought this book as a companion to the one I have on Colefax and Fowler. Have always admired the work of the firm. Enjoyed reading more about John Fowler and the projects he worked on.

  3. Book's pictures are of poor quality and worse still, small in frame. Not worth the asking price.

  4. I was dissapointed with the lack of quality "full page color photos" inside this book. One can not get a sense of the cozy details in Fowler's designs, in the pics represented within. I found the book mostly a biographical story rather than an inspirational journey through Fowler's career. Don't be fooled by the intimacy presented on the cover...once inside you might be surprised by the lack of warmth.

  5. John Fowler has and will continue to inspire the way I decorate my home...this book is full of lovely illustrations and photos and a very interesting read

5 comments about Informal.

  1. This is one of the most important book about informal architecture.
It is about how idea becomes possible reality. Instead of accept the way it is, it playfully explores the other way of merging engineering & architecture.

  2. i bought it as a gift, based on information in the New York Times. don't know how it was received.

  3. Informal is an extraordinary work. I guess the reason why it's so shocking is that the content of the book is not like those static structural forms or solutions that we see in structural class. The case studies that Balmond brings to the table are very recent and genuine by star architects. I guess I was shocked by the fact that all these architects are not structurally oriented architects such as Foster/ Piano/ Calatrava/ Hopkins. Rather, they are theoretically approaching architects such as Koolhaas/ Liebskind; or, tectonically approaching architects such as Siza. I never thought projects by them had anything to do with structural or mathmatical innovation. Reading Informal, one can easily detect where the originality lie in each project. Sometimes it's in the irregularity of geometry or sometimes it's in mathmatical mystery. Balmond contends that they are all in mother nature. Unlike a formal structural engineering (e.g. Peter Rice) Balmond's originality comes from the informal networks. In High-tech, the ingenuity of structural entity was condensed into joinery. Informal networks is much more diverse and complex than that. It is against the conventional formal structural idea of hierarchy/center/symmetry. Balmond argues, formal approach is defining a problem in a "fixed" or "contained" manner; hence, leading to a same old idea of solution/ detailing. In Informal, Balmond redefines it in a more active/dynamic geometry, to bring about unexpected realities. Sometimes through structural innovation and sometimes through special surface treatment, Balmond promoted and realized the ideas of star architects. Overall, he has freed architecture from the "Cartesian Cage".

  4. It was quite interesting to get a look at the somewhat unusual engineering process of Cecil Balmond.

And to discover his inputs behind some famous building, from Koolhas, Libeskind to Siza.

The book is quite easy to read and don`t think you are going to get a structural crash course from Balmond (I must admit, I was bit disapointed of not finding that) but you do get the kind of passionate and heartily discussions you would get if you had the chance of drinking down a few drinks with Balmond and ending up with his famous sketches he drew on the bar's napkins.

Expect a book with graphics and layout of Koolhas' SMLXL / Big fonts, dual-tone pictures.

GOod read, good essay, not for someone looking for glossy pictures

  5. Cecil Balmond is passionate and inspirational. When working with him, you know there is something amazing happening. I had the pleasure of having him as a studio instructor at Yale University, School of Architecture. Cecil believes in the possibilities of architecture and engineering working together in ways that enhance and grace both fields. This book brings his insight and passions together. I highly recommend it to engineers and architects alike.

4 comments about Graphic Guide to Interior Details: For Builders and Designers (Graphic Guide).

  1. This book is helpful to get a picture of the interior details of building a house. Very informational and good for reference.

  2. I purchased this because I was very impressed with the "Graphic Guide to Frame Construction" book. I was much less impressed
by this book - lighter on the details and less updated.

  3. Here you will find up-to-date information about virtually every material involved in interior construction - common and uncommon, residential and commercial - so you can compare key factors and make the best decisions for all of your projects.

Illustrated with hundreds of clear drawings that can be easily incorporated into architectural plans and show how these materials connect to the structure of a building and to each other. Here is information on everything from drywall to resilient flooring, from raised panelling and colored concrete to banisters, handraios, door trim and cabinet hardware.

Written by a practicing architect with his own firm, the drawings and descriptions have been reviewed for accuracy by independent architects and builders from all over the country. The result is an unrivalled guide to finishing the inside of a house.

  4. The Graphic Guide to Interior Details: For Builders and Deigners gives a comprehensive analysis and break down, not only for professionals in the industry, but for the first time home buyer, or for people who are just plain interested in built structures. There are endless details and drawings that are accompanied by current and up to date information that not only complies with modern day building codes and standards, but also has innovative and progressive techniques for the future. I'm a student that has gotten great use and resource out of this book.

5 comments about Stylish Sheds and Elegant Hideaways: Big Ideas for Small Backyard Destinations.

  1. With this publication, I was expecting to get a view into the lifestyle designs behind out-of-doors structures. What I got was a passionate challenge to develop my own design for a backyard get-away that, until this book, I didn't know that I needed. There are literally hundreds of wonderful pictures that connect the reader with the details of the illustrated spaces. The words connect you with the feelings and decisions of the owners, builders and/or designers. This is a dreamer's book. It's a sensuous, beautifully wrapped, exquisitely imagined, settle-in-front-of-the-winter's-day-fire and dream about spring that you could imagine curling up with the pets book. You won't leave it without a thought to what next garden project you'll be undertaking. Awesome collaboration between Writer and Photographer.

  2. This book is a disappointment. I was looking for ideas on how creatively to use an outbuilding's interior space. What I got was countless arty photos of knick-knacks contained within the featured buildings. So many of the photos are close-ups of decorating details that it's often impossible to get a sense of the overall space. Too much fluff, not enough real content. This one goes on ebay today.

  3. I originally put this text in the comments section by Dennis' review but figured no one would see it there because of his negative attitude.

I beg to differ with Dennis. I am the creator of the "Mod Pod". I was flattered and eager to help contribute to Debra's book. This is not a how-to-build-a-shed book. I have been planning a shed of my own in my very modest East Austin home. Even being the creative person that I am, I took inspiration from several projects presented in this book. I intend to build ponds similar to those in "Texas Tea House" chapter, create an elevated structure as in the same chapter, create a wall similar to the roof in the Manhatten chapter, and create a sun screen like the Soji-like panels located in the San Fransisco chapter. (Sorry Debra, I don't have the book in front of me as I write this, so I don't remember the actual chapter titles.) My point is that I found the book to be exactly what the author intended it to be.

Wikipedia defines a book of this nature as follows:

A coffee table book is a hardcover book that is intended to sit on a coffee table or similar surface in an area where guests sit and are entertained, thus inspiring conversation or alleviating boredom. They tend to be oversized and of heavy construction, since there is no pressing need for portability. Subject matter is generally confined to non-fiction, and is usually visually-oriented. Pages consist mainly of photographs and illustrations, accompanied by captions and small blocks of text, as opposed to long prose. Since they are aimed at anyone who might pick the book up for a light read, the analysis inside is often more basic and with less jargon than other books on the subject. Because of this, the term 'coffee table book' can be used pejoratively to indicate a superficial approach to the subject.

Dennis, I suggest you sell your used copy (here on Amazon.com) to someone who will enjoy it.

    Harrison Bates

  4. The reason I gave this one star was so you would not think I over looked rating it. If you put a minus sign in front of the one star that is my real vote. This book is a book of photos. Photos of rich people's toy play houses and has no bearing on what most people would create for themselves. I thought I would buy this instead of one of the books written by The Stiles of the same subject but I sure made a mistake. If you watch Martha Stewart and think she is somehow hooked to reality then you will like this book. All fluff.

  5. i enjoyed this book. It gave me many ideas for my farm cottage and tool shed. i recommend this book to others.

4 comments about Space Planning Basics.

  1. The book is a very good reference to the importance of the space planning process with thoughtful exercises incorporated. It is best as a text book vs. trying to read and understand it on your own.
You must understand that it's not a code book, so some of the dimensions, etc. should be verified based on your own location.

  2. reading it makes me feel pretty much miserable, though it is something i need, and the book is quite helpful. i just don't quite think it should be called "basics" because a lot of information there is advanced level. and it just brings the question of space planning on a sad level. there are ways to talk about there in a better perspective. but still, if you don't have any other references, this is something good to use.

  3. great condition and arrived very early! book is like brand new!

  4. For very general understanding of Interior Design and as a study guide the NCIDQ exam this book is quite good. Be aware that as a tool for real world design solutions, it is lacking. The authors design philosophy and methodology are terrific, but the design solutions have problems. (example: A door entering into a two stall toilet room swings into the sink area. Anyone standing at the sink will be hit by the door when another person enters the room.) Although, if the reader has enough understanding of real world design conflicts and can spot the design errors in this book's illustrations, then the reader has gained the skill necessary to provide good workable design solutions. Many of the illustrtions do not comply with ADA guidlines, which is NOT necessary for passing the NCIDQ, but essential for the workplace. North Carolina, the state where I practice, has codified the ADA guidelines. Use this book as a study guide for NCIDQ. Be aware of design flaws. Use it at the office for philosophy and methodlogy only. If you are studying for NCIDQ, good luck, keep it simple, and parrot back everything that is required in your design solution. Do your finished design in black ink and write notes for everything.

5 comments about Mary Emmerling's Beach Cottages: At Home by the Sea.

  1. The ocean seems to recharge anyones personal battery when they visit the beach, Ms Emmerlings approach shows some fresh ways to think about the experience while smelling the wind off the water, loved it.

  2. I love this book. Beautiful pictures and interesting stories for each home described. A must if you dream of someday having your own beach cottage.

  3. I live approximately 60 miles from the Oregon Coast and nearly 900 miles from Malibu and Santa Monica, California...three of my favorite places in the world! I simply can't enough of "beach" and coastal themes in my decor, my attire, my art, my music and my life...

So what's a self-described "beach girl" like me to do when she's stuck inland and can't go to the beach whenever she wants? She decorates her home in that style, that's what!

Well, today I went in search of books with ideas on how to decorate with my favorite style of design, and saw quite a few available. Yes, I saw the really nifty set of books by Rachel Ashwell on the "Shabby Chic" design style and even that lovely book by actress/artist Jane Seymour called "Making Yourself At Home" but the one that really captured my eye this time around? The one I took home? Mary Emmerling's Beach Cottages: At Home By The Sea.

I really enjoyed the pictures of the various beach cottages in her book. There are some AWESOME, unique and very colorful pictures of home exteriors and interiors from various beach communities all over the USA. You can enjoy the view of the sea from Nantucket, MA to Miami, FL to Galveston, TX and of course, good ole Southern California! There's also some great pics of the "Shabby Chic" queen Rachel Ashwell's home in it.

Now I must admit I was a bit miffed that Ms. Emmerling had overlooked the Pacific Northwest to feature in her book. There are some spectacular and beautiful beach homes on the Oregon and Washington Coast (including the San Juan Islands) that would've fit in very well in this book. However, when I saw that she listed some cool Northwest shops, then I decided all was forgiven lol. Maybe she can remember us in the PNW for her next edition? hee hee

I really appreciate the fact that there's none of the uber-perfection obsessed Martha Stewart-y mess in this book. All of the ideas are so easy to do and not too overly expensive, either. Even if you're smack dab in the heartland someplace, this book has all sorts of cool and user friendly practical tips on how to make your place "beach cottage" worthy. This book is a welcome addition to my library, so I'm recommending this book to all of y'all to check out and enjoy, too.

  4. Love, love love Mary Emmerling. I have ALL of her books. I always get tons of ideas form her special books & this one's no exception. Pictures are beautiful.

  5. As a longtime Mary Emmerling fan I can hardly wait for each book to come out; as a beach fan I was not disappointed; a lovely book. I enjoyed seeing her old beach cottages and how they have evolved. I think she missed some great old cottages in my northwest florida area; especially at Grayton Beach; but otherwise this is a very nice book representative of her great taste. I'm looking forward to her work with House Beautiful.

1 comments about New Paris Interiors.

  1. I'm going to love poring over this book over and over again. It's impossible to look through it all at once, anyway, it's so big and the visual onslaught is overwhelming. Being a middle-class, Great Plains middle-aged person, I will never see these apartments and rooms myself, but it's fun to see how world-class artists, musicians, actors, directors, designers and financiers like to decorate their homes. Some of them, I swear, are compulsive collectors - stuff *everywhere*! Most are beautiful rooms, lending lots of ideas or at least daydreams for one's own home.

The photography is lovely; the text is in blocks of English, French, and German, so if you want to practice your French or German, this is a fun way to do it. If you're a Francophile, like me, it's entertaining and educational peering through those windows out to the Parisian sights.

My only complaint is how huge the book is; it's not a lap-book, that's for sure. It is definitely worth the money, in my opinion.

4 comments about Business and Legal Forms for Interior Designers.

  1. I received this book in a reasonable amount of time and in the condition promised. Thanks!

  2. THIS BOOK IS NECESSARY FOR ALL INTERIOR DESIGNERS, JUST ABOUT EVERY FORM NECESSARY TO START AND RUN A BUSINESS IS IN THIS BOOK. THIS BOOK SHOULD SHOULD ALSO BE USED FOR INTERIOR DESIGN BUSINESS PRACTICES COURSES

  3. Book was a help to understand what forms would be useful for an owner of an interior design business. the book contained information on how the form is used, an example of the form. a cd was included that contained all forms covered in the book. this was most useful. To be honest, the forms were very basic and did not take advantage of color printers or fancy fonts. I used the forms I needed as a model to create a better versions in microsoft excel. If you are looking for basic forms to provide your clients and vendors, this book contains all that you need. If you need something alittle fancier, and are good with your computer, model your own from what is provided. I would still rate this book as a good buy.

  4. This book is really helpful. I love the forms and that they are all on CD in variable formats. Great place to start from!

5 comments about Fabrics: A Guide for Interior Designers and Architects.

  1. Thank you very much the book arrived before I expected and in very good conditions!!!

  2. This is not an easy reference guide, but a textbook that gives lots of information that is not needed for daily design use. It is also filled with lots of pictures which would be nice if they were really helpful, but they seem to take up a lot of space and act as fluff.

  3. Well-organized and informative general reference on textiles for home or commercial use. Also has a great references section. Pictures are helpful, but I'd also recommend having a "hands-on" source in order to get a better understanding of all of the terminology and descriptions.

  4. A very nice book, quite in depth.
Covers natural and man made fibers, types of weaves, production and fabric finishes. Many color plate examples to illustrate the information.
This book was shipped quickly by Amason at half the price I paid at the campus bookstore! Needless to say, I returned the book purchased at the campus bookstore.

  5. book was in excellent condition, just as the seller specified! no torns, no highlights, no wear! arrived promptly!
