3 comments about The Unlisted Heroine.
- I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It was obviously well researched and well written. I read it from front to back in two readings...I could hardly put it down! I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys history and relationships.
- Charlotte Brooks, the heroine of this novel and (true story) shows that no matter what obstacles comes your way you can always work it out. She had the determination and spunk to wed the man of her choice even when it was against the social standing of her parents. After being disinherited from her wealthy family and marrying her sea captain, Edwin McKeever, she worked on the front lines during the Civil War, nursed the sick as well loading casings for the north's artillery. She traveled by rail from Philadelphia to San Francisco with two small children in the 1860's to make a new life and to meet her husband. This was from an aristocratic woman born in 1835. It was important to revisit the obstacles that woman faced in that time period. We have come a long way baby!
- Though categorized as a novel, the charm of The Unlisted Heroine is that its heroine actually existed. Originally written a generation or two ago by the heroine's grandson, the manuscript was discovered after his death by his devoted niece; we should all be so lucky as to find that an ancestor of ours was as plucky, and indeed notable, as the subject of this story. William McKinley McKeever, the original author, was a professional writer in his day and (though his manuscript has been revised) the voice and tone of this book reflect the era in which McKeever wrote - giving us a further layer of historical insight. It is perhaps this "voice" - so different than books wholly written today - that links us to this remarkable woman who lived life to the fullest in her day. No, she was not famous (or even "listed", as was so important to her times and culture), she was a regular person just like any of us; but, she changed the world for the better, in small ways and significant ways, everywhere she went. Will our descendents say the same for us should our story be unearthed generations from now?

3 comments about Christmas,1940-1959: A Collector's Guide to Decorations and Customs (Schiffer Book for Collectors).
- I love Robert Brenner's Christmas collectors' books! I bought Christmas Past some time ago because it not only told you values and showed photos of the old ornaments and candles/lights, but it also included photos of how the trees were decorated and memories from people who lived in that era. When I saw this volume, for the years 1940-1959, I opened the pages and nearly cried: the photos looked just like those of my relatives' homes when I was a small child or photos from my mom's or dad's childhood. The descriptions are quite detailed as well and there are many, many photos of the beautiful ornaments of the time.
- What book were they reading? This period of 1940 to 1959 really defined what our modern Christmas has become. This was the period when things such as christmas lights and mass-produced ornaments took off...Names Like Noma and Shiny-Brite were the rage...
Bubble Lights, Glass Ornaments, Aluminum trees, etc...this is a wonderful and nostagic step back in time to a more innocent era of Christmas in the U.S. Brenner does a great job of looking as the customs that have defined our holiday and the decorations that have disappeared in the sands of time.
Well done!
- This book was exceedingly dull. I wanted to scream "get a life" throughout most of it. I can't believe he's an English teacher -I'm glad he's not mine - I'd be bored outta my mind!!!!
