3 comments about Our Vanishing Landscape (Dover Books on Americana).
- I have yet to get a book by Sloane that wasn't chock full of interesting facts and/or Americana. My only complaint is that the publishers by and large printed his books on paper that does not age well. Most of his books are bought from the second hand market.
Read him if you are interested in the days of yore.
- Eric Sloane wrote "Our Vanishing Landscape" in 1955 as the United States was entering the Atomic Age and our rural past was rapidly vanishing. He wanted to document through his wonderful illustrations and writings, a material culture that would soon be gone.
Sloane's take on American history ignores the big names and the famous dates. He is more interested on the mundane and ordinary. Sloane's point of view is that most Americans were farmers a hundred years ago and therefore had to master a whole series of skills that are now gone. Purchase this book, if you want to see how are ancestors lived and functioned on a daily basis. Sloane's wonderful illustrations are like a window into a time that is long gone.
Eric Sloane's books are addicitng. If you like this book, you will have a whole series of outstanding books to purchase. In this same vein, I would also recommend the works of Edwin Tunis, another master illustrator an historian of America's material culture.
- This book presents early american real life on the farm with many wonderful detailed illustrations. Learn how a grist mill works, how roads were dug, how stone walls came to be, and other wonderful information about early america. The illustraions only add to the reader's understanding and amazement at how ingenious, hardworking, and skilled our early american ancestors were.

4 comments about The Encyclopedia of Pepsi-Cola Collectibles.
- This is the only Pepsi guide book that I have, and I'm not real happy with it. It is inadequate, hardly scratching the surface of all the Pepsi collectibles out there.
As with most other collectibles guides, the back index leaves much to be desired. I guess the author agrees because he omitted it completely. Big mistake. Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of Pepsi guides out there, like there are for Coke. But that doesn't mean this one is the "bible" of Pepsi collecting; it doesn't come close. I'm hard-pressed to figure out why others have written such glowing reviews for it. It's pretty, but it's incomplete, the prices are all over the map, there's no back index...but there's very little competition.
- A very nice reference book and worth the money for collectors or fans of Pepsi.
- The Encyclopedia Of Pepsi-Cola Collectibles is an amazing resource for collectors and dealers. Nearly the entire book is devoted to full color photographs of everything ever made by or associated with Pepsi-Cola, from slogans and trademarks to containers, cardboard inserts, cans, bottles, caps, a wide array of merchandise and much more. Offer a wealth of historical and background information on the Pepsi-Cola bottling company, along with authoritative and reliable price estimates for Pepsi-Cola collectibles, The Encyclopedia Of Pepsi-Cola Collectibles is a superbly presented and essential guide for the dedicated Pepsi-Cola enthusiasts!
- A brand new, year 2002, hard-bound library volume containing 256 pages with more than 2,000 large, full color, sharp photos of every type of Pepsi collectible. Current values are shown. Items are listed by category, including signs, containers, novelties, toys and accessories and paper items. Sufficient text is included, covering Pepsi Collectibles, Reference Guide, History of Pepsi, History of Pepsi Trademerks and Advertising Slogans. I found the "Paper Items" section particularly interesting. Add it to your library.

1 comments about Ohio Is My Dwelling Place: Schoolgirl Embroideries, 1800-1850.
- Better than I expected, the coloration and samplers pictured are truly remarkable. A lot of good basic Ohio history, with maps by county and description of how the state was divided. It is one of my favorite things, and I never get tired of picking it up and reading more about their simple lives.

2 comments about Russel Wright: Creating American Lifestyle.
- This is a great book for the Russel Wright collector who wants to know more of the backstory and history of the man and the pottery. But do not confuse this book with a collector's guide. This book will probably not help you to decide if a piece is RW or not, and certainly will not help in pricing or deciding rarity.
- This book is a great compliment to the exhibit at the Cooper-Hewitt, but more than that. The information here is not more of the same, of what's already been said about Wright in other books. Although some overlap is necessary to tell his story, there are many new details of his design life and philosophy, and marvelous photos of some of his products and drawings, not seen other books. There are also great pictures of Mary as well. I feel that this book was very sensitively done and that all involved in creating it (and the exhibit) deserve applause. It would be hard to imagine any R.W. fan not loving this book.

5 comments about The History of Beads: From 30,000 B.C. to the Present.
- A beader was looking for the history of beads, their origins and the processes used to produce beads. Specifically, those topics for modern day beads. Too little detail on modern beads for the purpose the book was purchased.
- Highly detailed, technical and descriptive ... outstanding for the "advanced", but over-whelming and a bit complex for the novice (as I am).
Overall, a book that one can acclimate to and find valuable and well worth the investment in time and practical use.
- This book was fine if you wanted information regarding beads up until the 1940's, but the information on beads after that period is very very slim. The words "to the present" is very misleading.
- This book covered all about beads. I bought it for a presentation my daughter was doing for her 6th grade class. It was very helpful.
- I was expecting a huge book full of pictures and information, and while there are pictures and good information, it's rather sparse. I'm surprised at how few books are available on the subject of jewelry in history, considering it's nearly the only thing we have left of many cultures. If you are desperate for any information on beads in history, this is a good starting place, but I was left wanting more.

2 comments about Miller's Collecting the 1960s (Miller's Collector's Guides).
- Very informative book, easy to use. It give tons of information on vintage 60's items.
- If you're into American collectibles from the sixties, this isn't recommended. This book is almost exclusively British products. I didn't recognize any of the items as being available in the US either during the sixites here, or widely collected here now.

4 comments about Standard Catalog of American Light Duty Trucks, 1896-1986 (Standard Catalog of American Light-Duty Trucks, 1896-2000).
- A very useful book in identifing pickups of all sorts. And also a great book to just browse through.
- Bought this for my husband and he has spent many hours reading it has good write ups of the Trucks etc. This will get him more interested and wanting a Truck of this own some day.
- There are not many reference books on light-duty trucks out there, and this is an excellent one for someone researching a certain vehicle. It fits what I was looking for.
- While I found a few minor errors in some of the model information, I have to give this book a good review. All the makers are there including manufacturers that I had never heard of. There are hours of excellent browsing of the little guys as well as pages of excellent, and usable, information on the big names. My only major complaint with the book is that I am not happy with the paperback format. I would like a book that holds up a little better. Otherwise...Excellent reference work. And fun too!
