5 comments about Atkins Diabetes Revolution: The Groundbreaking Approach to Preventing and Controlling Diabetes.
- This diet is not for everyone; check with your doctor before starting.
- I gave this to a friend who has diabetes and she said that it is very helpful.
- I have found that the Atkins low carb diet is able to control my blood sugars and has allowed me to decrease my medications. I Think Dr. Atkins ideas are perfect for anyone with pre-diabetes or diabetes type 1 or type 2. Along with this, I also recommend Dr. Bernsteins books, The Diabetes Diet, and The Diabetes Solution. All are geared to us learning to monitor our sugars and eat accordingly. I have felt healthier, and my blood sugars are within a normal range since following the recommendations in the book. I highly recommend it, and wish the medical community would open their eyes to the results of following a low carb diet! After putting up with an awful cycle of being told to eat complex carbs, and watching my blood sugar increase from even oatmeal, and having my medications increased so I could eat the carbs the medical profession was telling me I needed, I finally found these books and learned. My blood sugars are almost normal now and my energy is great! Again, I cannot recommend these books enough to anyone who has pre-diabetes or diabetes.
- My friend and I have been on this diet for about five weeks, and in that time I have lost 13 pounds and she has lost nine pounds. Be prepared to spend at least $400.00 the first month, then after the first month, it does not cost as much, as some things will be deleted from the menu, items that you may not care that much for and you can still stay in range of the amount of carb intake. The only problem we found is that the portion size for the meat is not mentioned, but we just used four ounces when meat was involved. We are on the 20 carb a day diet and at first you think that that is not enough, but after a few days, we found that we do not get hungry when we were not on this diet, and mostly the craving for food has disappeared. I would highly recommend this diet, and I am planning to follow it until I lose at least 40 pounds, then just eat sensibly from then on. I have already stopped taking Glucotrol, which one of the side effects is weight gain, and every week my sugars are dropping, and within the next four months I plan on not even being a diabetic any more, that is my goal.
- You've just been diagnosed with type II diabetes. You're scared, confused, etc. This is the book to buy to help you through it. It goes through all the technical, medical jargon and makes it understandable to you, then gives you clear cut ways to improve your situation. Is changing your lifestyle easy? Nope, but then again, nothing worth having/doing is easy. I can tell you, though, that if you follow the directions in this book, not only will you not be hungry, but you will feel healthier than you ever have in your life. At least I do...and so do many of my co-workers, friends, etc, who follow Atkins. You really have nothing to lose.

- I'm not sure about the health detriments, but this diet just didn't work for me. In order for it to work properly you need to watch your intake and not over-do it. This isn't a magic diet.
- For those who have begun the Atkins low-carb way, this book helps you maintain a lifestyle of weight and blood sugar management.
- I am going back to Atkins again. I was on this diet, dropping 30 pounds. My doctor said it was dangerous, to get off. After gaining back the weight,(plus a few pounds more) I tried: Weight Watchers and Calories & Fat counting. I have just maintained a 10 pound up & down for three years. After reading that the Adkins diet was most effective in taking weight off, I am going back. I ordered the book because I threw my old book away.
- IF YOU FOLLOW HIS ADVISE YOU CAN LIVE A HEALTHY LIFE AND ACHIEVE GOOD EATING HABITS. YOU HAVE TO LEARN TO MAKE WISE DECISIONS IN EATING AND THE BOOK HELPS YOU DO THIS.
- Great introduction to low carb lifestyle. But, if you want to know why, beyond just loosing weight, you must look at : Good Calories, Bad Calories

5 comments about Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution.
- Atkin's was a very observant and intelligent doctor. He has an incredible voice in his prose, full of confidence and knowledge. I've tried several diets, and while I can lose some weight on all of them, Atkins is the easiest for me. Under weightwatchers I am always on the edge of hunger and I don't lose that much weight - even religiously following the guidelines, and I find the diet not that satisfying.
Under atkins' diet I am not hungry most of the time and I find the diet very satisfying and fulfilling, I can make a lifestyle change. Of course, it would be better if it didn't have so many animal fats in it, but it's better to lose weight eating fat than not to lose weight. I plan to slowly cut down the fat content as I lose weight to make it a more healthy long term diet.
He has great references, the one thing that gets boring for me is too many individual stories about how some person has done great on his diet. I'd rather see more long term, large participation studies in the book (but I know not that many have been done.)
The main point of the book is that you aren't wht you eat, but you are what you eat turns into inside your body - and what the food in your body does is not intuitive and a bit surprising. For instance, it used to be recommended that you shouldn't eat cholestrol (eggs, for instance) as it could increase your cholesterol levels, however, the effect is so small as to be almost unmeasurable, there are other things in your diet that have much more effect over cholesterol levels than the amount of cholesterol you eat. Likewise, the amount of fat you have is not directly related to the amount of fat you eat. It turns out that fat on your body comes from high levels of sugars in your food which the body quickly digests and stores the excess immdiately into fat as your blood sugar rises, thus more sugar (carbohydrates) equals more fat. The body then quckly goes to low blood sugar, which causes you to be hungry and to eat more sugar, causing your weight to quickly spiral out of control.
Why is this? Because for millions of years the human body has evolved in an environment that had no manufactured food! We ate vegetables, meat, fruit when in season, nuts, and that's about it. Until the last 10,000 years (which have only made minor changes in our genome) we never had the opportunity to consume refined grains and sugars or concentrated alcohol. All of these things are more efficient in $$/calorie, but screw up the body's naturally evolved caloric intake system. Dr. Atkins understood this and has designed a diet to take this into account. It turns out that fat takes longer to digest (as does fiber with carbohydrates) so that as the claories from these types of food are digested in your blood stream, the blood sugar level is raised so slowly that the excess is burned, not turned into stored fat; in fact, the body starts to burn the stored fat to even out this gently changing blood sugar level due to calorie intake - this diet really does burn fat.
I can say that for me it really works. I eat until I'm full, when I'm hungry I can snack on food that I like and I feel satisfied and I get down to my ideal weight. Now, long term I plan on eating less meat and more vegetables, but getting the weight off first is key. The best thing about this diet is that you lose body fat faster than you lose weight, and excess internal body fat is linked to all sorts of bad health things - like diabetes (type 2), higher blood pressure, hardening of the arteries and heart attacks. This is a great diet, especially if you have plateaued on other diets and need that extra something to get you through.
I reccommend it over fat restriction diets any day. Now, my wife does not do as well on this diet, so it's not for everyone, but for my metabolism, this is a great way to eat and stay healthy.
The book itself is extremely well done, diets planned for the first few weeks (every meal.) Tables of carbohydrates per food type, glycemic levels, recommendations for how to eat and how much exercise you should be doing. Solutions to problems on the diet and how to correct them, recommendations for suplements with reasons and explanations that can help you figure out what you really need. It's well laid out and easy to use and a fascinating read. It's a great book and a great tool to help you lose body fat and get to your ideal long term weight goal.
- I am the author of a new book entitled GENOCIDE;HOW YOUR DOCTOR'S DIETARY IGNORANCE WILL KILL YOU. I am a family physician with over ten years experience introducing a low carbohydrate, more fat, more cholesterol, more protein diet into my patient's lives. Through this dietary approach I have cured type 2 diabetics, treated people with high blood pressure with little or no need for meds, seen tons of weight lost and the list goes on and on.
Atkin's book is easily one of the best books ever written on low carb dieting. The three books I recommend my patients read are Atkins, Protein Power, and of course my own :-)
Unfortunately most physicians will never read this book and if they do they will dismiss it as an opinion, not based in fact. For some reason, the scientific method is not followed in dietary clinical trials. The scientific method should be: I have an idea (theory, supposition, opinion, hypothesis whatever you want to call it), I perform an experiment to either prove or disprove my idea; if I prove my theory-great-look how smart I am. But if the results do not prove my idea, I am supposed to re-evaluate my initial idea, not call the experiment flawed or the results inconclusive.
The reason the dietary clinical trials appear contradictory is because the researchers in these trials start off with a conclusion--not an idea-- perform an experiment, and when the results of the experiment do not support what the researchers already 'think' they know; they now call the experimental design flawed or the results inconclusive, which is generally not the case.
I have literally treated thousands upon thousands of my patients with low carb diets over the last decade. I love when the labs come back with higher HDLs, lower triglycerides and normal blood sugars. I love teasing my patients and ask if they are eating more fat and cholesterol. When they say yes, I ask them "Well, if you are eating more fat and cholesterol, then why did your fat level drop and why did your HDL rise, and why did you lose weight?" I always get a smile back, because my patients know what I am getting at. And what I'm getting at is the fact--and I mean FACT, that low cholesterol, low fat diets DO NOT WORK to any degree to help people stay off or reduce their medications.
This book should be required reading in all medical and undergraduate colleges. If physicians actually understood the correct way to tell their patients to eat--many disease processes would become extinct--instead of the human race.
Allow me to end my post with the three biggest dietary myths in America;
MYTH # 1
Eating fat makes us fat. FALSE. The truth is that eating fat does not make us fat, unless we're eating too many carbohydrates along with that fat.
MYTH #2
Eating cholesterol containing foods causes heart disease. FALSE. There has never been any study which has shown, convincingly, that eating cholesterol containing foods causes heart disease.
MYTH #3
Probably the biggest dietary myth out there is that the calorie actually means something in human nutrition. FALSE. The calorie means nothing in human nutrition.
Atkins was a true pioneer in the correct way to eat.
Genocide: How Your Doctor's Dietary Ignorance Will Kill You!!!!
- I lost all of the weight I needed to on this diet-and then some! It is a healthy diet. You do eat veggies, even fruit eventually. I think that people should educate themselves before saying negative things about anything! If you don't want to eat like this, okay. Don't. Your life is your own. But hey, the diet does work for those interested. ;-)
- I initially read and practice his work years ago and lost 65 pounds AND kept it off ever since. Low carb is bringing us back to the basics of food, replacing the fast food and processed food of our generation.
It is too bad he didn't live to see the Low Carb Craze which he started from her personal beliefs.
Low Carb works and is healthy!

- I had always heard mixed reviews of Dr. Atkins' diet plan. Well, after reading this book and deciding to give it a try, I am healthier than I have been in years. The book does a nice job explaining the science behind the diet, explaining the steps to successful short-term and long-term diet, and has some great recipes.

5 comments about Dr. Atkins' Age-Defying Diet Revolution.
- This book has really opened my eyes about eating well. We've all heard about the harmful effects of free radicals and the need for anti-oxidants, but many of us don't know exactly why. Atkins explains the science in clear terms. Understanding how and why free radicals damage us and anti-oxidants protect us really motivates people to eat well (at least it does for me).
Of course, no Atkins book would be complete if it didn't advocate a strict reduction of processed carbs. This book is no different in that respect. What is different, however, is that in this book Atkins makes the strongest case yet outlining exactly how and why sugar and refined carbs harm us, not only by making us gain weight, but also by making us age. He explains clearly and his arguments are all well supported (which is typical for him). Lastly, this book talks extensively about supplements. The rumors that Atkins is all about bacon and steak is nonsense. You owe it to yourself to read this book and educate yourself about what Atkins really does advocate. Then you can make an informed decision about how you want to eat (and age). Good luck to you all.
- It is astonishing to read the slam pieces here about Dr. Atkins so-called obesity and overweight condition at the time of his death. Here are the facts:
* He previously had a heart condition called cardiomyopathy -- a serious disease of the heart muscle which is unrelated to diet. * He died of a head injury because of an accident falling on slippery ice and not of being overweight. * His actual weight was 200 pounds when he was admitted to the hospital at the time of his accident. The erroneous reports of him weight 258 lbs was based on his weight at the time of his death. The extra weight was not fat, but an accumulation of body fluids linked to organ failure during his coma. * His previous reported heart attack was due to a viral infection and not diet related. He spoke openly of his condition on various national news programs. * The report that was released about him being overweight was leaked to the press by a group named "Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine", which is an ardent opponent of the Atkins diet. In short, they distorted his weight by reporting the weight at the time of death - 258 lbs, and not at the time of his admittance - 200 lbs...an obvious attempt to discredit and distort the facts surrounding Dr. Atkins death. * A formal complaint has been filed by the Medical Examiner of New York regarding the suspicious leak of this information to the public by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine." * The disinformation surrounding Dr.Atkins untimely death is politically driven by the AMA and other detractors of the diet.Dr. Atkins book, New Diet Revolution has turned the AMA and other nutritional views upside down and has created a furor over the standard edicts of the medical profession. What is not said among the detractors of the Diet is that it is safe and it works. The information contained in this book will not only help you lose weight, it could save your life. The food industry, especially the bread and pasta industry have lost hundreds of millions of dollars because of the low carb revolution. Is it any wonder that this diet is under so much fire? Keep an open mind and read the book. As a side note, ignor the mumbo-jumbo rantings and ravings of the "Elixir Diet" system. The hatred and mis-information spread by the reviewer is evidence enough that the Elixir system is phony as a three cent penny. Nuff said. The guy hasn't even read the Atkins book! Sheesh.

- This book EXPLAINS why diet is SO important and the best book I have ever read on diet, nutririon and suppliments.
- Covers everything I wanted to know. Makes a lot of sense. Already I am seeing success in his ideas.
