  1. I enoyed this immensely and it is one of my favorite books by MHC. I didn't hit on the identity of the murderer right away. MHC's work is filled with sympathetic characters, particularly the heroine, I am always left feeling that if she really existed, I would want to add her to my circle of friends. A knack MHC usually achieves with all of her characters. An enjoyable read from a consistently good author.

  2. you'll never guess who did it. I find it good. Mary Higgins Clark is very good indeed. This book inspires people not to pass judgement because sometimes the truth is beyond appearances and prejudice. It's an inside to the fashion industry, it's about doubt, suspicion, murder and a little bit of love. I won't spoil the plot:)

  3. We are given a look into a killers mind. During certain areas in this book it made me feel as if I were right there with him. Great descriptives they really pull you in!

  4. This is one of Mary Higgins Clark's earlier books. The story is a little over 200 pages long and I read it in one sitting. I love her writing and enjoy reading all her books. If you love a good mystery, then you'll love this book. And if you're interested in fashion, as I am, you'll love it all the more. This story has elements of both. Throw in the gossip writer who's planning on putting out an expose book, but gets murdered instead. Add in a heroine who has to sort out all the people who may have wanted the gossip writer dead and who might have actually killed him and you really have a mystery. This story has it all, romance, murder, the glitter of New York and the fashion world. This is a book to die for.

  5. i love her books and this was one of my fav ! i loved this one oh. a lot of characters but all of her books are very easy to read (for distracted people like me) and the vocabulary is very easy too, GREAT end! by the way

  1. I'd have to say this book is one of my favorites. I loved how they portrayed the twins being telepathic, or their sense that one was in danger. The characters are vivid, the story line was wonderful. It was hard to put it down. Definitely on the top!

  2. I have always been a big fan of MHC. I've read all of her books. I enjoyed reading Two Little Girls in Blue. I only wish that the kidnapper's identity wouldn't have been so obvious. I think that the story would have been more mysterious if the Pied Piper had been someone that people would never have suspected in a million years.
Other than that, it was a nice read.

  3. This is the first book by Mary Higgins Clark that has not "grabbed" me and kept me reading as soon as I could find any spare time. She's a great author, but this one is below average.

  4. I have not yet read this book. Someone suggested it as good reading so I ordered it.

  5. The Book was good, the plotline a little familiar but not boring, the way the pieces of the mystery were strand together were a little unrealistic but it kept the book exciting;however, the ending of the book just fell flat. The whole book was like 'going up a roller coaster' but the end made it just stop. Overall it was a really good book to pass time, I would recommend it to anyone who likes a good mystery!

  1. I read this book while I was sitting in my OB/GYN's office, in agony. It was Thanksgiving and Christmas was right around the corner, and I fould out that I had tumors. I checked out the book as a Christmas read, but after reading it, it confirmed the idea of what Christmas is all about. I realized how lucky I was, and was glad that my health problem had been found before it grew worse.

  2. My high school English class had a class set of these books and it was assigned reading for the holiday season. The assignment was met with the usual groans, but the students dove in. Soon I was hearing remarks like, "Hey, I read the whole book in two days!" and "This is the first assignment that I have liked!" and "Guess what? I really read this book!" Most students actually finished reading the book in much less than the assigned time. A couple of them admitted that this was the first book they had actually read all the way through. The story takes place on Christmas Eve and involves a lost boy. It involves some tense situations and presents a number of good role models for children. After our class had completed the reading, each student who felt so moved wrote a note to Mary Higgins Clark. We were delighted a few weeks later when we received a letter from her expressing sincere appreciation for the many laudatory comments from the young readers. I recommend this book to youngsters from 9 to 99 who wish to have a "good read" for the Christmas season.

  3. The name of the book is Silent Night by Mary Higgins Clark; it is wonderful and demonstrates a Childs courage and faith. Along with a killers point of view on life.

The story takes place on Christmas Eve in Manhattan, N.Y. The story's main conflict is to return Brian Dornan safely home after being kidnapped by Jimmy Siddens who has recently escaped from jail. Throughout the book, Brian has faith in a Christopher medal that saved his grandfather during a war to save him from Jimmy and save his dad from his sickness.

There is a variety of situations taking place that connect. For example, Catherine is desperate to find her son, Brian, Jimmy is thinking of ways to get rid of Brian and sneak out of the country, Cally (Jimmy's sister) is worried on what Jimmy will do to Brian, and Brian is terrified to find out what Jimmy is going to do with him. He attempts to escape from Jimmy a couple of times, which brings out more suspense. The suspense and tension in the book force you to keep reading.

I would strongly recommend this book if you like to be put in a suspenseful situation. It is a real page-turner because it is told in so many different points of view, which makes it even more interesting; it helps the reader understand what each character is going through and there is so much going on that you are curious to find out what will happen next.

  4. After hearing my friends rave about Clark's books, I decided to pick up this book to see what all the fuss was about. Unfortunately, it was pretty much what I suspected. The characters were shallow and one-sided and the story was sappy. I didn't bother finishing it. I guess it's alright if you're looking for a quick read and want to turn your brain off.

  5. This story was even better than the ones MHC has written with her daughter, because the characters weren't as goofy and the overall tone wasn't humerous. Not that those are bad (I love the witty, quirky stories too!), but this was a straight dramatic story about a 7 year old boy who followed the woman who pickpocketed his mother and ended up being kidnapped and taken hostage by her deranged brother who had just busted out of jail. While that doesn't very Christmasy, the family rallied together in prayer at Midnight Mass, and drew faith and courage from St. Christopher. The characters were presented in a compassion-isnpiring manner, and the story was fast-paced and action-packed.

5 comments about Mount Vernon Love Story : A Novel of George and Martha Washington.
  1. I really liked this book. It was friendly, charming, and undemanding. It flowed gently and easily without too much undue excitement, but enough to keep from being bored. Its pace was like that of a good marriage: Simple, straightforward, honest, reassuring, with occasional surprises to keep things interesting.

I read a lot of really intellectual and fast paced, intricately dramatic stuff. This book was just sweet and light -- I read it in three evenings -- but made me want to be a better person, and made me proud of my country's heritage (if not its current political situation). I like our founding father even more now that I realize he was a real person with real emotions and struggles not unlike my own.

On the other hand, it is much more of a biography of George than a story of his simple yet real romance with Patsy (Martha). I did feel like I got to know her (and would have liked her) pretty well, though. Its original title, Aspire to the Heavens, is also a bit too grandiose, however. I might have called it simply George Washington at Home.

  2. I found this book to have interesting information about our first President. However, I was not hooked on this book. I know a book has been great when I am disappointed to finish it. That did not happen with this book.
I encountered an error at the beginning of the chapter where Sally is in Bath, England waking up thinking about Washington. It states that it is 7am in Bath and must be noon in the States. This is untrue. There is indeed a 5 hour time difference between England and the Eastern time zone, however England is 5 hours AHEAD of the east coast. 7am in England would be 2am on the east coast. Noon on the east coast is 5pm in England.

  3. This is by far one of the very best historical novels that I have ever read. I read it as a part of a book club to which I belong. Mary Higgins Clark made George and Martha Washington and those who surrounded them very real people, not just historical figures whom we have revered. It was warm, wonderful and a totally delightful read. The review by members of our book club was absolutely glowing.

  4. Very interesting historical novel about an aspect of our first president not commonly appreciated.

  5. This is a quick read and has some good information. It's a book for the young teenagers.

  1. I read this book this year and I couldn't put it down! I'm in seventh grade. This book isn't a good book for people that get nervous or scared easily. But it's great for people that love Scary Mysteries!

This book is a true Scary Mystery classic.

This book has romance, which leads to a huge mystery that has people's lives at stake.

  2. Her boyfriends wife was killed, the murderer, a seventeen year old with a hard background, was arrested and sentenced to the electric chair. But still Sharon felt very strongly about capital punishment and that it should not be used in the federal government's punishment system. She felt that although he was guilty (in her opinion) of murder that life in prison was a more appropriate punishment. Death she felt was cruel and unnecessary. Susan fought for months to get a clemency on Ronald Thompson's case. Her boyfriend, Steven Peterson, whose wife Thompson was accused killing, supported capital punishment even before his wife had been killed. Although he and his new girlfriend, who he met about two years after his wife's death, had different views on the subject they both stayed desperately in love with each other. Sharon failed at her attempts to get the judge to change Thompson's sentence. But still even in his last two days of life Thompson's closest friends tried to find something they had missed to prove his innocence. Another man was watching the case very closely, he planned to kidnap Peterson's son along with Sharon and return them once he had collected $[...] in ransom fees. But a hoax for delivering the money was setup and the kidnapper was caught. Along with him being caught, police also solved the murder of Peterson's wife and proved Thompson's innocence. This was an ok book but it was very confusing. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a mystery and can easily understand confusing stories.

The characters in the story are outstandingly smart and realistic. The kidnapper watches Sharon an extended period of time without being noticed or thought suspicious. He also managed to get out of the neighborhood without being identified, but some of Peterson's close friends were looking out the window and noticed him pulling out of the driveway. Sharon and Steve (Peterson) both appeared on the Today show three days before Thompson's scheduled execution, the couple had very different views on the same subject and while they both stuck strongly to their opinions, after the show they made plans to see each other the next day. Thompson's mother, Kate, fought very hard to get a petition filled with the names of the people who knew her son best, so that she could try and get a clemency on his sentence, but she felt very betrayed when she found out that Sharon did not believe her son was innocent instead she felt that he should not be punished so brutally.

This story was quite confusing. New characters were introduced so frequently that it was hard to keep track of everything going on. In the beginning of the novel the kidnapper/murderer is what seems to be the main character, then after a chapter or two Sharon and Steve are introduced and the story bounces back and forth between the two of them. But after only about three or four chapters characters are introduced so quickly that the reader is easily confused. A few characters that are introduced within the first ten chapters include: Roger Perry, Glenda Perry, Neil, Mrs. Thompson, Ronald Thompson, Mr. Lufts, Mrs. Lufts, and Sandy.

Although confusing this book is a true thriller. The climax of the book is awaited desperately by the reader. Aside from the fact that it can be confusing because of the bouncing back and forth between characters and stories, the book has an immense amount of suspenseful thrill. For example, Sharon was watching Neil, Steve's son, until Steve got home and from there they had planned to go out to eat or to a movie, but when a knock came at the door and was answered it was the kidnapper. The reader holds on to every word as the author describes how the kidnapper stuffed Neil into a duffel bag with his hands and feet tied, and his mouth gagged. The author implies to the reader that Thompson could be guilty but at other times reassures the reader that he is completely innocent.

The novel was not great but would be an adequate time filler that is certainly filled with a good thrill for the reader throughout the book. The characters are smart, realistic, and the book is thrilling. Once again I recommend this to those readers who do not get confused easily and who love the mystery/thriller book genre.

  3. A Stranger Is Watching?

In the novel A Stranger is watching, by Mary Higgins Clark, a drama novel; was about a murder that took place two years ago, in which a six year old child witnessed the murder. The novel opens as Steve and Shawn debate capital punishment. A young man named Ronald Thompson has been sentenced to death for Nina's murder. Throughout the novel they give clues on who could be the killer. At the end of the novel the last person you would think was accused of the murder. The main character was Ronald. I personally liked the novel because I like suspense novels and movies. I would recommend this book to anyone because it is so dramatic and detailed. Also it's full of thrill.

    Jessica Acosta

  4. Classic MHC. A teenager wrongly convicted of a woman's murder, waiting on death row for his execution in a few days. A grieving widower and son, seeking closure and healing. A psychotic killer who has never been traced to five unsolved murders. Well-written, entertaining, nail-biting.

  5. Reading this book I was struck by how dated it was. Although the book I was reading appeared new the copyright was 1977.

Despite being dated, it is still an enjoyable read. I read the last half in about two days as I didn't want to wait to see what happened next. I fought sleep the last night to finally finish the book at midnight. This is a typical Mary Higgins Clark but does not seam cookie cutter so you won't feel like you have read this already. Some of the characters (the police) I found a little irritating and hopefully not true to life. Maybe I'm too used to the police being the heros in suspense novels.

Overall this is an enjoyable book weaving together a couple different story lines.
