  1. Trodding the familiar terrain of the western romance with practiced skill, veteran novelist Dailey returns again to the Calder clan and its Triple C Montana ranch. Ty Calder has recovered from the kidnap/shooting that ended Calder Pride, and he and Jessy are joyfully expecting twins.

---------- Reviewed by Janet Sue Terry, author of the contemporary romance, "Set Me Free" series. Book 1 - Possibilities and Book 2 - Resolutions. Newest release is Just Our Best Short Stories 2005. www.janetsueterry.com.

  2. This was my first Janet Dailey book and I was so disappointed! There was no real romance between Ty and his wife Jess, Tara was just pathetic, and the ending was horrible. I wouldn't tell a friend to read it, I couldn't even bring myself to read it again if I tried.

  3. This was not one of the best books I have read. Janet could have left Tara out completely in this story. She dominated the storyline and left Jessy and the twins out. Ty never seemed to spend time with his children. I just go plain out done with the story and skipped from about from 351 to 380. There was Jessy waiting on Tara and out riding the range in the roundup while Tara was spending time with Ty.
I am very disappointed in the writer.

  4. I just finished reading this book today and again I thoroughly enjoyed this book - you feel as through you a living the book with the Calders - you can picture the various scenes in your own mind and even have a picture in your own mind as to how each of the characters look - you feel their emotions and cry with their pain. I ordered this book from the US as I have not been able to find it in Australia. I have now started reading Calder Star.

  5. Purchased this book for my daughter who collects everything Janet Dailey. She was really surprised that I got it so soon after ordering. The book was in great condition.

  1. I really liked the strong beginning started out well and kept the pages turning, but midway through it seemed to lose its momento. It became transparent what was going to happen next. Was worth the read, but definitely not one I would reread a second time.

  2. I felt the 2 main characters did too many hurtful things to each other to even consider getting back together at the end. I don't think I would forgive Flame if I were Chance. She was delibertly hurtful and untrusting, considering she didn't even know the old lady. I was disappointed and didn't have a good feeling at the end of the book.

  3. but faltered and lost me. Once the story went to how the Morgan-Stuart rivalry started back in the 1800s, it became way too slow and boring. Why did the author feel the need to rehash the whole thing in such detail? Especially when it didn't involve the main characters? She could've told that part of the story in half or even a quarter of the space and still conveyed the essence of it and how it affected the lives of the main characters. Unfortunately that wasn't the only problem with the book -- the primary reason I'm giving it only 2 stars was the ending. There was a lot of pain in this story -- as another reviewer said, the main characters hurt each other a lot. Throughout it all I kept thinking to the end when they would see the error of their ways and get back together. They got back together but we got less than a chapter of it. I felt jipped...after everything they did to hurt each other, we got a nice tender scene and then the end. These two characters needed to talk...a lot...and we deserved to read about their reconciliation and forgiving each other. I would not have minded the pain if we got a good dose of joy in the end...but I guess this book was more like reality in that sense. No thanks, I read for magic, not reality. I really liked the way the Flame and Chance started out, I wanted to see them like that again -- so in love and head over heals for each other. I wanted to see Flame trust Chance again and him forgive her for everything. I think the author went to far with Flame's hatred for Chance...she really became bitter and vindictive...I didn't like her anymore. And I got sick and tired hearing about the plans for Morgan's Walk...again, way too much detail -- spare us and get back to the heart of the story -- the relationship between the lead characters. Not enough of that. Could've been an excellent book. If we had gotten some real closure and less unnecessary detail, it would've been a 5 star rating.

  4. Flame Bennett is the daughter of an upper class San Francisco family, who moves in the right circls and holds down a top job with an advertising company. Her chief client is Malcolm Powell, a multi millionaire who is forever trying to turn their professional relationship into a more personal one. When she meets another successful businessman, Chance Stuart at a social function, bells start to ring for both of them and they begin a torrid love affair. Chance is the presumed heir to a large ranch in Oklahoma, owned and run by his Aunt Hattie, an embittered old maid who hates the thought that, because of the wording of the family will, the ranch must pass to a blood relative. Chance is the son of her sister who married a man way beneath her socially, and because of this, Chance has always been the despised heir, even though he has become one of the top businessmen in the state. Chance has been secretly making plans for the day when he inherits the ranch, when he plans to flood the valley and house, turning it into a vast holiday complex. Flame and Chance marry after knowing each other for only a few weeks and it is only then that Chance realises that Flame has more claim to the ranch than he has. When Hattie discovers Flame's whereabouts, she poisons her mind with doubts and suspicions about Chance's true motive in marrying her. The plot thickens with many more dramas as befits a story with the principals named Flame and Chance, but it was a good, if guilty read!

  1. I have been hooked on Janet Dailey ever since my Mom gave me a subscription to Harlequin Romance novels when I was in Junior High. I have read many of her books and loved them (like "No Quarter Asked") so decided to order this title on cassette. I believe there was too much of the Dailey storyline missing such that it did not flow in her natural lyrical sense. If you just want something to listen to while on the treadmill, the price is right. There is rekindled affections brought together by the death of a loved one; a young innocent who shows the older couple what it is like to be young, carefree, and in love again; and, a realization that you can never truly run away from your past. Maybe I am too harsh a critic....

  2. I agree with the previous reviewer! I too listened to this audio cassette recording of Janet Dailey's Castle in the Sand and I see that Amazon is saying that it's unabridged but according to Romance Alive Audio on the back of their audiobook case it is abridged and approximately 90 minutes of playing time and that is not a whole lot of time to get to really enjoy a story. Castles in the Sand appears in a short story anthology from Zebra Romance and the Anthology is titled Spring Bouguet and the story has less then 140 pages so I really don't understand why a short story romance needed to be abridged for audio, I mean they could have easily recorded the whole story! Castles in the Sand is about a woman named Bridget O'Dwyer and a man named Reese Sullivan. Both of their fathers were Irish immigrants who started an Amusement Park in California and when Bridget's parents died she went to live with Reese and his family and eventually fell in love with Reese but was hurt when he went off and left her but 12 years later he is back when his father becomes ill and he and Bridget try to keep the old Amusement Park up and running and there is some rekindled romance between them but because it's so abridged I felt that the romance got shortchanged and there could have been more of the romance! If you are interested in this story then I recommend buying the anthology that it is in, the ISBN number for that book is 0821753096.

  1. I couldn't put the book down....thoroughly enjoyed it

  2. This is a story of betrayal, love and acceptance. It is a true "page turner" that I enjoy reading again and again. Get involved with the sisters' fight for their father's love and money. Enjoy the romances that bloom and the bond that grows between the sisters. I reccomend this book. You might ask why I give it only four stars? Well...the storyline between the two sisters could have ended better; plus, Dailey's idea of their father's money equaling his love for each daughter? Read it and tell me what you think. ;)

  3. My copy of this book is soooo worn out...but I keep reading it again and again. A terrific story -- if you're a horse lover, you will really enjoy this book. Janet Dailey really did her research on the Arabian horse business of that time (the boom of the early and mid 80's) and only made a couple of errors, which only Arabian horse insiders would figure out anyway. In addition, the characters are believable and sympathetic. All in all, a fulfilling read -- good for those summer vacation days!

  4. I read Heiress by Janet Dailey and I was moved. It kept me interested throughout the whole time. What was most interesting was the setting which is Houston, TX and I am very familiar with that setting. It's about these two girls that share the same father and one is illegitimate. Abbie Lawson is the legitimate one and she lives with her mother Babs. Rachel her half sister, was born on the same day as Abbie even though they had different mothers they were like Twins. Rachel has come to town to attend her father's funeral. There she finds out about the history of her father and his other family. Abbie is rich aristocrat who learns to be tame and down to earth while Rachel becomes self absorbed and in turn they switch places. Both of them fall in love with different men. They pursue their interest in horses which leads them to a devastating end.

  5. I absolutely loved this book. The passion between Abby and Mac is fantastic. I have never experienced it reading any other book. I read the book and the same day I finished it I bought it off ebay. I read it again as soon as I received it in the mail. It's the only book I've read and then had to reread it because I liked it so much. If you like romance and passion this is the book for you!

  1. This book started out with a cast of interesting characters, however, early on you could figure out who Delaney would end up with. Jared, Lucas, and Riley all interested in Delaney, lots of side characters that were quirky (her dad, Toby, Susan, Delaney's staff, Rina, the lawyer). It was a fun summer read, went quickly, and had a plot instead of girl meets guy who she doesn't like but who likes her, etc., etc.

  2. Since my youth, I know the existence of Janet Dailey, but I never wanted to try her books. And some years ago, when I heard about the plagiarism she made on Nora Roberts books (and Nora's one of my favorites), I was disgusted.

But the worlds keep moving, and then, ILLUSIONS came to my hands and I started to read it. And believe me, I loved this book. I couldn't believe that it was plagiarism, and later I knew it wasn't. Janet has a very nice sense of humor, she made up adorable characters on this book and a very nice plot that kept me reading during the whole night. It's the kind of book that sometimes it's not so interesting but that is never boring. I loved this book and I'd highly recommend it for fans of this genre. Janet is a very good writer.

  3. I never saw it coming - this is a great mystery and romance, and I figured out the romance but the murder mystery? Never would have dreamed it! Love Janet Dailey's work and you'll love this book. Lovely romantic ending!

  4. Overall, the story was good but what was missing was more character development and relationship background between Delaney and the one she ends up with. The story's end was too abrupt and and epilogue would have been nice.

  5. Hard to understand why every guy was interested in her.

Not a lot of character development. I was enjoying the storyline until the middle of the book totally bogged down. Not sure where the author was going. By the end of the book I couldn't have cared less what happened to anybody.

  1. Sorry...but after Maggie's character died in the last Calder installment...I lost interest. I think I cried for about two days after I read "Calder Born, Calder Bred" ---but then again, I was only 16. NEway...I skimmed through "Calder Pride" this afternoon in the library but I just couldn't bring myself to read about Maggie's family going on without her. It just didn't seem right, somehow. I keep hoping that Janet Dailey will come out with one final Calder book that will bring Chase and Maggie back together again. Only in my dreams, I suppose.

  2. I just recently read the previous 4 in this series and enjoyed them very much. Maybe I expected too much of the last one because of this, but I felt that this book left out much of the plot of the previous books. Along with the feel of Montana and the Calder Range, it left out alot of the topics that I followed thru the previous storylines and I missed them. Janet Daily tells wonderful stories, though, and I hope to see more of them from this series someday.

  3. All of the Calder books intice me! I never read any book clear through until I read "This Calder Sky" the first Calder book! I have every Calder book. Once I start reading these books I literaly never want to put them down! I have not found any Calder book that did not completely capture my attention! I wish this set would continue on forever! I do not want to have to try to find other books to read, because no book can compare to the Calder books! I am fifteen years old and my mom got me started reading these books! That is the best thing my mom has ever done for me! There are no words to explain how happy I get reading these books.

  4. I have read all of the Calder series. I have liked all of them.
I hope Janet Dailey finishes the series. She left some un-answered questions. I have all the Calder books so far.

  5. This novel is great for those warm summer nights where you want to just sit back to a good old western novel. Having grown up near Montana this was an interesting read about western men in boot, horses, spurs, and all that ranch stuff. Maybe being an adult Easterner had me wondering how old fashioned this book was with all its mentioning of silver honcho belts, etc. I just don't buy that physical love is all that. Plus all the references to cattle runs, beef, and shotguns just made me cringe. Maybe it is my Sex and The City generation, but this romance is all about lawmen, horses, and a foolish young girl's one night stand in Texas resulting in an illegitimate child. The scenes of her ostracism for being an unwed mother despite her powerful family and the shotgun marriage five years later is way too backwards redneck. Every love scene of romantic tension between Cat and Logan seem more like estrogen and testosterone overload than "love". If you like men who believe in dominating women with old world rules, then read Calder Pride. Otherwise, indulge in Luanne Rice and Anita Shreve for some serious deep literary romance.

5 comments about Lone Calder Star (Calder Saga's).
  1. In this latest installment of the Calder saga, Janet Dailey displays the hallmarks that made the earlier Calder books such a critical and commercial success. The story takes us to Texas and the Cee Bar Ranch, home of the first Calder ancestor, Seth. Lawman Clint Echohawk, still mourning the loss of his father, travels from Montana to the ranch in Texas to manage the ranch and investigate the suspicious ongoings there. Sparks fly between Quint and Dallas, a waitress/student who eventually, along with her endearing grandfather Empty, move into the ranch as hired hands. Whether fighting the corrupt schemes of neighbouring rancher Max Rutledge, or feelings for his new love Dallas, Quint Echohawk reminds us why we love the Calder men...they're strength, pride, and tenderness. All in all, this is a very welcome addition to the Calder Saga. No Calders are killed of in this book (thank you Ms. Dailey...I was running out of kleenex) but the plot is nonetheless well-paced and keeps you hooked! If you are a fan of the earlier books in the Calder saga, this book will take you back home!

  2. I have read all of the Calder Series and throughly enjoyed them.
My husband read the original books and when I finished the latest, Lone Calder Star, he decided to read this book. He
enjoyed it so much that I gave him the other 4 hard back Calder Books to read. Janet writes easy to read books that is spell binding and I do not want to put them down until I finish them. I would definitely recommend Lone Calder Star to anyone that enjoys a good book.

  3. Cliche-ridden, wordy addition to the Calder cycle features cardboard characters and overly-familiar situations.

  4. As stated, this was the first novel of hers I've read. I have the paperback version. I had a book I hated, took it to my bookstore and got this one instead (it was the same price, not the best way to pick a book).

I sat on it for a few months before I finally picked it up. I found I should have picked it up much earlier. I enjoyed the novel. I do agree with one of the reviews that some of the characters were a bit "unwritten" but I still liked it and not having read any of the other Calder novels, it was still easy to follow.

The one thing I liked about it, well sometimes in novels you can just sit there and think, yeah ok, that's never going to happen. I really think that this type of situation exists and she wrote it as it may have happened anywhere. I really enjoyed the way the characters talked. No one really talks like that anymore and I miss it. Big business doesn't care about who and what they take over either and I thought Daily wrote truthfully about that as well, but didn't throw it in my face.

So, all in all, it was a good book. I hated putting it down. :)

    A-

  5. Ms. Dailey has created her own family empire in print. The Calder family are irresistable. Throughout the years, she has written any episodes about Jessy, Tara, Laura, Cat (the indominable Calder women), and now Chase and his grandson Quint. He's actually Cat's son with Logan, but that's another story in itself. Most of the family have lived in Montana but had the means to enjoyed forays to Europe and such places. Chase Benteen Calden had been part Indian (Sioux) with the prominent cheekbones (like Bill Ross) and the lovely smooth black silky hair which Quint Echohawk has inherited.

In Fort Worth, Texas, the empire, Calder Cattle Company, has expanded to owning the ranch called Cee Bar Ranch, which is where One Calder Star takes place. "A lonely star, a Texas sky, A Calder learns that trouble is nigh." Cold and windy in Texas, while the plains of Eastern Montana (big and empty land which has once been the domain of the mighty Sioux tribe) are in the mid-sixties. In this episode, Quint is sent to clear up a problem, not with woman as the good-looking Calder men have their prime choices, but with an ill-natured, rich rancher named Max Rutledge who is bound and determined to buy up all the land around the Cee Bar boundaries.

Quint's latest flame, a flirtatious waitress, Dallas Gardner, poses a different kind of problem. Marriage doesn't come first with the Calders, sometimes later if all goes well. For now Quint must keep his interest in young Dallas a secret -- not because he is ashamed of her. On the contrary, he reveled in the way she made him feel. Rutledge is a man with few scruples and would use any means, especially a pretty woman, to have something to hold over him. He was one of the conscienceless, like Joe and Karl, and Dallas (the woman) could be used as a pawn.

From Chase to Quinton in this 9th account of the Calders' expanding empire out West, to Trey, the heritage continues back where it started in the lone star state of Texas. "A single star, A Texas brand; there's no doubt he's on Calder land." Janet Dailey now lives in Branson, Missouri, the place Deana Martin also calls her new hometown.
