5 comments about Atkins Diabetes Revolution CD: The Groundbreaking Approach to Preventing and Controlling Diabetes.
- This book was specifically designed for readers who want to lose weight despite some of the difficulties of being diabetic. It is easy to read, easy to follow and helps predict pitfalls and potential problems then it gives solutions for those pitfalls and problems. I find it to be very useful. The Atkins diet was recommended by one of my physicians. This adaptation for Type II Diabetics is particularly helpful for me.
- This book is so full of information. I am so glad I purchased it. Anyone with Type II Diabetes definatley needs to read this book. I have followed the plan and infact have brought my blood surgar levels down to amazing numbers in one month. Even though my diabetes educator does not agree with my choice of not eating "refined" carbs. She did admit I have done wonderful things with my blood surgar values. I thank the book Atkins Diabetes Revolution!!
- I'd recommend Atkins' other books but found this one tedious. Too many cooks in the kitchen have ruined the dish. (It was not entirely written by Dr. Atkins) Sadly I found no recipes in it that were worth making again. This is not a good representation of what low carb eating is, IMO, compared to Dr. Atkins' other books. This may turn someone off.
- I must give credit to Dr. Robert C. Atkins for popularizing an approach - carbohydrate restriction - that helps people with diabetes control their disease, and likely helps prevent type 2 diabetes in others. Vernon and Eberstein do a great job explaining his program.
I can best summarize this book by noting that it is the standard Atkins diet with a few modifications: 1) special supplements 2) you add additional carbs to your diet more slowly 3) the warning that diabetics may well end up with a lower acceptable lifetime carbohydrate intake level.
By way of review, the Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution $5.99 is a very low-carb diet, particularly in the two-week induction phase. "Very low-carb" means lots of meat, chicken, fish, eggs, limited cheese, and 2-3 cups daily of salad greens and low-carb veggies like onions, tomatoes, broccoli, and snow peas. After induction phase, you slowly add back carbs on a weekly basis until weight loss stalls, then you cut back on carbs.
As an adult medicine specialist, I have no expertise in pediatrics. I didn't read the two chapters related to children.
The authors present "complimentary medicine"in a favorable light. Unsuspecting readers need to know that much of complementary medicine is based on hearsay and anecdote, not science-based evidence. In that same vein, the two chapters on supplements for diabetes and heart disease recommend a cocktail of supplements that I'm not convinced are needed. I don't know a single endocrinologist or cardiologist prescribing these concoctions. Then again, I could be wrong.
Vernon and Eberstein provide two excellent chapters on exercise.
A month of meal plans and recipes are provided for 20, 40, and 60-gram carbohydrate levels. [The average American is eating 250-300 g of carbs daily.] The recipes look quick and easy, but I didn't prepare or taste any of them.
The 5-hour glucose and insulin tolerance test (GTT, paged 61) that Dr. Atkins reportedly ran on all patients who came to him is rarely done in other medical clinics. This doesn't mean it's wrong, but certainly out of the mainstream. The authors admit that at least a few people will have to count calories - specifically, limit total calories - if the basic program doesn't control diabetes, prediabetes, and the metabolic syndrome. Limiting portion size will speed weight loss, they write.
What we don't know with certainty is, will long-term Atkins aficionados miss out on the health benefits of higher consumption of fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains? Much of the scientific literature suggests, "Yes."
What if we compare the long-term outlooks of a diabetic Atkins follower with a poorly controlled diabetic who's 80 pounds overweight and eating a standard American diet? The Atkins follower is quite likely to be healthier and live longer.
-Steve Parker, M.D., author of The Advanced Mediterranean Diet: Lose Weight, Feel Better, Live Longer
- We are so pleased with the information and layout of this material. It has been extremely beneficial since the day we recieved it. An absolute MUST HAVE for any diabetic who would like to live life healthy and medication free!!!

5 comments about Atkins for Life: The Complete Controlled Carb Program for Permanent Weight Loss and Good Health.
- I am going back to Atkins again. I was on this diet, dropping 30 pounds. My doctor said it was dangerous, to get off. After gaining back the weight,(plus a few pounds more) I tried: Weight Watchers and Calories & Fat counting. I have just maintained a 10 pound up & down for three years. After reading that the Adkins diet was most effective in taking weight off, I am going back. I ordered the book because I threw my old book away.
- IF YOU FOLLOW HIS ADVISE YOU CAN LIVE A HEALTHY LIFE AND ACHIEVE GOOD EATING HABITS. YOU HAVE TO LEARN TO MAKE WISE DECISIONS IN EATING AND THE BOOK HELPS YOU DO THIS.
- Great introduction to low carb lifestyle. But, if you want to know why, beyond just loosing weight, you must look at : Good Calories, Bad Calories
- Sure this explains the diet but wanted info on the diet itself, not all the wheres and whys. It was a waste of money for me.
- I looked at the diet, but wife and I decided on something else, which I have lost 30 lbs on another diet plan. not a book either.

- Looked at the book decided was not for me & wife, tried something else, actually lost 30 LBS book and plan was not for US !
- Dr. Atkins makes so much sense! When I read this book I had many "ah ha" moments! I have heard a lot of critics complain about this diet being unhealthy, however when you read the entire book, you will see that it is actually very healthy. I think the critics did not read his book! If you think about it grains, while they occur natually, have to be processed to be eaten, which makes them less natural. While meat and vegetables and fruit can be eaten in their natural state, making them a more natural way of eating. Don't get me wrong, I love carbs and whole grains! I think they are okay to eat on occassion, but the main part of your diet should be vegetables, fruits and proteins. The best thing about the Atkins way of eating is that you can have your cake and eat it too! There are so many recipes out there that mimic what you would be giving up that you just do not feel deprived. Check out this site for an unbelievable recipe collection to go along with this book: (Don't worry it is all free - no ads, no gimicks)

- I' ve been on every diet on the market, low-fat, low-carb, you name it.
I was on Atkins for few years, I lost 20 pounds, but then gained the weight back.
I' m now on "the Perfect 10 Diet" which explained to me why I gained weight by messing hormones and how this diet causes cancer. I do not know what kind of harm I' ve done to my body after all these years. My doctor appointment is next week.
- Dr. Robert Atkins is considered the godfather of low carb diets. He first published his book Dr. Atkin's Diet Revolution in the early 1970's and later reintroduced it as Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution in the early 1990's. For many years the consensus among nutrition experts was that excess fat in one's diet caused excess fat in one's body. Atkins a cardiologist by training, turned this theory on its head, and said that carbohydrates not fat, were the cause for the epidemic in obesity. The diet Atkins recommended was low carb, high protein and high fat. This caused an uproar among the diet establishment, and has proven to remain controversial to this day.
The basics of this diet are to initially remove almost all carbohydrates from your diet. This includes not only breads, pastas and cereals, but also fruits and only the least starchy vegetables. The purpose of this phase is to put your body in a state of ketosis, where your hunger is turned off, and you lose a dramatic amount of weight in a short period of time. After the initial two-week phase you are allow a wider range of vegetables, along with some legumes and some dairy. This middle phase is to last so long as you are losing weight. The final phase which is the lifetime maintenance phase, you are allowed a very slight amount of carbs so long as you do not begin to put on weight.
Pros
Fast Weight Loss: You can lose weight very quickly on the Atkins diet. Results of 10lbs or more of weight loss in the first week are not unheard of. Also your hunger levels are typically reduced to zero, because hunger is triggered by your blood sugar levels, which remain low without eating carbs.
Cons
Uncomfortable: Constipation, bad breath, jaundiced skin, and extremely low energy levels are all common complaints of those on the Atkins Diet, especially during the induction phase. Also a diet of almost all protein and fat becomes very monotonous and unappealing within a short amount of time.
Bottom Line
The reason this diet is still around and still talked about is because it works....in the short term. Try it for a week and you will definitely lose weight. Ultimately the diet is unsustainable, as most people find the food choices far too limiting, and end up quitting the diet at some point. In the end what is the point of doing anything, if it can't be sustained in the long term.
- I read this book and found some interesting things: That according to the book carbs are bad for you and that fat is not. If this is true then why do so many nutritionist tell you to eat fruits and vegetables?
