5 comments about Don't Sweat the Small Stuff for Teens (Don't Sweat the Small Stuff (Time Warner)).
  1. I always read books I get for my daughter first to confirm that I got her something right/good for her. This one is no doubt a winner. The titles of each chapter were catching enough to make you curious as to what you were about to read and then the story you read were a great explanation to the sometimes funny and odd titles. The story in each chapter was absolutely great. They were short enough to keep any kids attention, make a good lesson and walk away feeling good that you learned something new and were inspired. The really great thing is, my 13 year old who usually complains about sitting still and reading because she'd rather be actively playing sports, isn't complaining a bit about winding down and reading this book. She loves that most chapters are only 2-3 pages each, but even better, she is mimicking what they are teaching and I'm loving it, too, as a mom. This is a great read, a great inspiration and a lot of the stories are what these kids can relate to. I plan to buy it as a gift to others, but I'm not sure if I should get it for the parents or the kids.

  2. When my grandma first gave me this book, I thought it was gonna be another useless book saying "just be yourself" and all that [...]. But this book actually has substance and I was surprised that I actually got something out of it. Recommended to any teen on the "emotional roller coaster" who needs some guidance in their life.

  3. This book is irresponsible, and I equate selling this book to teens with selling them drugs. Each could drive a troubled kid over the edge to suicide. The premise of the first chapter is that for a teen to tell their troubles to a friend or anyone else is the same as "barfing on your friends". As crisis center and peer counselors know, many teens hold their most disturbing thoughts and emotions to themselves, and in all too many that leads to suicide attempts or successful suicides. Any useful ideas the author may have expressed in the rest of the book is more than negated by this irresponsible, lunatic advice. Please Amazon.com, withdraw this item from sale to impressionable teenagers looking for advice in their troubled lives.

  4. I am very dissapointed in this book. It is intended for a teen audience, but is written for an adult audience. I read it to several teens individually to get their opinion. One student commented, "It's obvious he doesn't have any teenagers." Try the library before buying this book I wish I had.

  5. I had previously bought and read two other books by Richard Carlson, Shortcut Through Therapy and Don't sweat the small stuff...it's all just small stuff. I had found that both those books made a huge difference in my life and helped me, as someone who suffers from anxiety, to look at life in a very different way. I had even read bits and pieces of Don't sweat the small stuff to my sons when they themselves were dealing with issues of their own. My younger son is soon to be 13 and my older son is 16 and has Aspergers syndrome. What was interesting was the my older son, the one with Aspergers, really crasped the simple easy to understand writing of the late Richard Carlson, so when I came across the Don't sweat the small stuff for teens I decided to get it too. As with Don't sweat the small stuff...it's all just small stuff, the one for teens is fantastic. Another thing which makes them so great is that each chapter is unrelated to the others, so you can just jump to a chapter which is very short,( takes only 5 minutes to read), read it with or to your teen and it will offer a simple solution to the situation at hand. I even carry the don't sweat the small stuff books in my handbag, as they are small and light, and we often just stop the car, pull to the side and solve a problem there and then! I would recommend both Don't sweat the small stuff books as I feel they go hand in hand and compliment each other. And if you have a high functioning Autistic teen, then I would really go for it, even though it is not written for teens in the autistic spectrum. The reading is so short that you won't loose their attention and actually encourages them to look deeper inside and see a way out which then lessens anxiety.

  1. This book was okay. A lot of it was self-explanatory things. Others might find it helpful, but I didn't think it was worth buying.

  2. First given to me by my Best Man, I've since given copies or recommended this book to many friends and relatives, including my wife. With about 35 years of marriage under my belt, "Small Stuff" provides a great refresher course to concentrate on what really matters. Written in many (90-100?) two or three page chapters, it is a book that is convenient to read one-chapter-at-a-time, which also allows time for each chapter's message to sink in! Apply it, and it will improve any relationship, not just your primary one.

  3. Many times life can become overwhelming. Don't sweat the small stuff in love can keep you focused on the most important thing in life--love. A good book for inspiration and remembering what matters. Annie Lawrence, author of Love's Secret Live Your Life In Love.

  4. Cute book. It makes you think about what is really important in a relationship.

  5. This book is the exact same concept as all the other "Don't Sweat..." books, it's just dealing with love.
I really like the writing style of the author (and his wife, who will "guest" author some of the chapters) and it's very easy to read.
I started to read the book over a year ago but still retain some of the concepts I read which means they really get the point across in the short chapters.
I would recommend this book for anyone in a loving (or not loving - it may help then too) relationship because the even if the content doesn't apply to the particular point in your life you are currently in (ex. marriage, kids, etc.) the concept still applies. Great book.

  1. This is a perfect book to have on your coffee table or at your bedside. Reading
any of Richard Carlson's 2 page chapters a day is wonderful support in having
a great life. This book has helped me feel at ease in myself. For example - the
chapter "Cut Your Some Slack," reminds me "Life is a process - just one thing after
another. When you lose it just start over again" - I love this! It's nice to
remember that every moment is new and full of possibilities.

I have also found books by authors Ariel & Shya Kane enlightening. By reading
their books, Working on Yourself Doesn't Work: A Book About Instantaneous Transformation, How to Create a Magical Relationship and Being Here: Modern Day Tales of Enlightenment, self-discovery has become so easy and fun. They say that "awareness is not an achievement - it is a way of life." If you enjoy books written by Richard Carlson, I have a feeling you would also enjoy those written by the Kanes.

  2. In keeping with Don't Sweat the Small Stuff" this book continues to be a motivational addition to my collection. It was worth me sweating to find an inexpensive copy.

  3. This book has brief every day narrations of every day life situations and gives you advice to stay calm or take the best out of the situation.
I think that it is helpful to read the authors point of view and realize that you dont have to choose to get angry about dirty dishes in the sink, and many many other indexed toppings.

  4. No matter what your mood, or what's going on in your life, this book has a section to bring a smile to your face. Guaranteed!

5 comments about You Can Be Happy No Matter What: Five Principles for Keeping Life in Perspective.
  1. For many of us, happiness is a goal that we never seem to achieve. We closely examine our unhappiness and fret over all the issues in our lives. We know in our hearts and our very souls that if we can just earn a little more money, deal with a childhood trauma, or get married that we'll finally be happy. Unfortunately, once we succeed in these endeavors, a whole new set of issues appears and we find ourselves still unhappy.

Life doesn't stop just because we read a self help book or decide to work on our issues. There is no secret formula that magically absolves a person from facing the challenges that we all experience. The ups and downs of everyday life will always be there. However, you can choose how you feel about yourself and your life. You can see problems as defining you as a failure or as a bad person or you can see them as merely a natural part of life. You can try to make your child act just the way you want or nag at your husband because he's not perfect or you can get some perspective and see that these little things aren't all that important in the scope of your love and happiness.

Perhaps, the most important thing I gained from You Can Be Happy No Matter What is the importance of taking time out. Like most human beings, when I'm in a low mood, the world seems darker and my problems more difficult. In the past, I thought that I had to solve these issues as they came up. As the author states though, real problems won't disappear when you are feeling more yourself. Little irritants that don't really matter will simply fall away. Then, you can work on your real problems and actually have a clear mind to do so.

  2. A basic concept of life changing significance explained in simple terms by the author. A forehead thumping wake up call for seekers of truth and the narrow path. With this book in hand, you have a chance to help yourself to experience life at a higher level.

  3. I read this book about 10 years ago and applied his principles as much as I could. I found that I was able to be a lot happier by setting aside unpleasant thoughts and feelings. I was able to get in the habit of postponing problem solving till I was in a good mood. So I was able to implement the changes in this book, and it helped me feel better, but I believe it harmed me in the long run.

I became so good at ignoring unpleasant thoughts that I became intolerant of any unpleasant feelings, and the thoughts that caused them. I became unable to solve problems, because I couldn't tolerate thinking about the problems and the bad mood that came with it. If you stop thinking about difficult things, you stop growing, and before you know it, 10 years have gone by and your stunted growth starts to show.

I think my situation was comparable to what AA calls the "Dry drunk". A dry drunk is someone who no longer uses alcohol to numb the pain, but still runs from pain in other ways. This book taught me how to avoid pain as effectively as any alcoholic can, and without the expense, legal problems, and physical addiction that come with substance abuse, but with the same stunted growth that a long-time addict faces when he's in recovery.
Thanks for listening. Your mileage may vary.

  4. If you're a fan of Richard Carlson, then you'll appreciate this book about everyday happiness.

It's focused on relationships, but it relates our approach and attitude towards other people to how we can increase our everyday happiness. As usual, it's written in a casual, easy-read manner.

Great to roadtrips or bedside table read!

  5. As we all try to find ways to be happy in our daily lives, this book can help you achieve that. Most of what he's written are all cliches and things you are already aware of and know about. Its still a good read and addition to my collection.

5 comments about Easier Than You Think CD: Small Changes that Add Up to a World of Difference in Life.
  1. This is a good, quick summation of things you may have read in self-help books, especially those dealing with cognative psychology. However, it contains nothing very surprising.

  2. This book has some VERY good ideas. There are some blah ideas too, but it's a quick read. Here are some of the best ideas:
If you base your happiness on things being different than they are currently, you've set yourself up for constant disappointment. The only aspect of life you have any control over is your own reaction to the events taking place. There are always going to be people doing things we don't like and things happening that we wish were different. We don't control much of what happens around us, but we do control how we respond to it.
You are the one creating your thoughts. You have the power to chance your thinking. You can follow your thoughts as they arise or you can change or drop them.

  3. THE PRODUCT I ORDERED NEVER ARRIVED. IT GOT LOST, I WAS TOLD WHEN I CONTACTED AMAZON MAY 10TH, 20 DAYS AFTER THE LATEST DELIVERY DATE PROMISED.

  4. I thought this was a good book. It really helps to think about things in a different way. Sure it's some stuff you have heard before, but it really helps reading it. I enjoyed it.

  5. Richard Carlson has turned himself into a veritable one-man brand and industry with his "Don't Sweat the Small Stuff" series of books. Here he argues that small stuff - small changes , actually, can have a significant and positive impact on our lives and the lives of others.

Carlson is not calling for quantum changes; he seems to be an instrumentalist at heart. The short chapters in this very readable book illustrate a smorgasbord of ideas on saving money, enriching your intellectual life (read eight pages a day) to deepening your key relationships (take time to listen).

ETYT reflects the idea that, to succeed in life, you don't necessarily have to hit home runs. If you hit singles lots of times when you come to the plate, you will advance.

In expounding on this theme in a non-preachy way, Carlson himself has hit a home run.

5 comments about An Hour to Live, an Hour to Love: The True Story of the Best Gift Ever Given.
  1. I discovered "An Hour to Live, an Hour to Love" by Richard and Kristine Carlson, on Amazon.com after purchasing "The Last Lecture" by Randy Pausch. I enjoyed both books and highly recommend them. There are significant differences in both books even though they are dealing with the final stages of life ... while giving heartfelt thoughts to loved ones left behind.

While Randy Pausch knew he was dying, Mr. Carlson's book was more a hypothesis, which became a sudden reality three years later after giving letters of love to his wife on their eighteenth wedding anniversary. Some among us have chastised the authors because of the simplicity of their messages. I beg to differ. The complexity of thought is not important. I have often felt profound ideas and exquisite prose ... reveal their points without obfuscation. What can be more powerful, practical, and poetical, than this quote from Mr. Carlson? "You will be remembered most not from your accomplishments in life, but for how well you lived and how much love you carried in your heart".

Mrs. Carlson answers him back (hypothetically) with her own thoughts on paper. The letters between these two marvelous people are sensitive, compassionate, and almost too personal to read. She has elected to share them with fans of Mr. Carlson's work for the greater good of society. I for one am thankful for the privilege.

Initially I was going to write this review from another perspective. I thought by focusing on his death, the author created a self-fulfilling-prophecy; until I read this quote from Mrs. Carlson: "I never dreamed I would be able to live an hour without Richard and truthfully after an initial death wish upon learning that that hour was now, the image of my daughters came to me, I knew I had to and I would go on." It reminded me in a meaningful way ... we, all of us, need to serve (and love) something greater than ourselves. Therein lies the wisdom of the message and the poignancy of the book. Reviewed by: Reginald V. Johnson, Upper Saddle River, NJ

  2. SPEAKS FROM THE HEART. WISH EVERYONE IN THIS SITUATION COULD PUT THEIR FEELINGS INTO WORDS AS ELEGANT.

  3. This book was enjoyable reading. It makes you think about how short life is and how we take our loved ones for granted that they will always be there. Fact is: they will not always be there so let them know how much you love and care for them now while you can.

  4. Well written and such an inspiration. This is a life lesson we all need to hear everyday. Life is a gift and we need to enjoy the journey.

  5. I cannot think of a better book to recommend. Those who should be reading it, likely are not and those of us who try to cherish each moment are likely to be the fans. Like preaching to the choir...if only the others would listen too.

  1. My name is Patrick Lane and I am a Sophomore currently enrolled at Loyola Marymount University. I decided to read this book for my interpersonal communications class and I am required to write a review for my final paper. I chose the book because I was interested in becoming a more optimistic, self confident person in order to become a better communicator and this book seemed to fit the bill. The book came off as an anger management guide at first glance. But soon after I began reading, it was clearly an aid to becoming a better communicator, whether that was its intention or not. I really enjoyed how clear and simple the topics were while also providing great insight. I can honestly say that this isn't a book that you become engrossed in, and I don't believe the author was trying to achieve that. This work seems to be, like I said before, more of a set of guidelines than a literary work. I would have like to have seen sections established and the chapters organized in some way based on what they were conveying. I felt that the length of the chapters were too short and ended rather abruptly leading to me to ask myself why the author did not go into more detail. While the organization was a little suspect, there were great values to be taken out of each chapter and life lessons that need to be taken to heart. The one lesson that stood out was from a chapter titled "Choose Your Battles Wisely". Great insight for any relationship whether it be with a brother, sister, friend, or a life long partner. A specific quote from that chapter says, "If you choose your battles wisely, you'll be far more effective in winning those that are truly important." The book really made an impact on me. I would recommend it to anyone and everyone who asks about it because it has such great advice to becoming a more optimistic person and skill communicator.

  2. I really enjoy this audio CD because i can listen to it at work, in the car, when i walk, etc. The content is so helpful, it gives you ideas and practical ways to face your life. I think that this material help me to be a better person and live my life with less stress. Also i am learning not to stress myself with things that are not important.
    This is great!

  3. I love this book because it reminds you that your life is determined by your attitude and perspective. Carlson gives you 100 simple ways to improve your life. I like to read one or two rules a day, keeping them in mind throughout the day.

5 comments about Creating Affluence: The A-to-Z Steps to a Richer Life (Chopra, Deepak).
  1. I am in the middle of a cross-over from being a former spy and infantry officer--metrics driven--to partnering with 23 others to create the Earth Intelligence Network and empower the public with public intelligence that forces the policymakers into accountability. So I find myself in strange territory--I used to blow off all the spiritual "squishy" stuff, and now I am finding that it provides not only a bridge, but a safety network as I venture into a "leap of faith" on what might be possible.

I found the same authors DVD The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success and book by the same title, The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success: A Pocketbook Guide to Fulfilling Your Dreams (One Hour of Wisdom) to be so worthwhile that I watched and then read them in combination.

This is a gem of a book, the kind of thing that the author himself says should be read once, and then used as a daily reminder, reading several pages each day. I agree.

Most fascinating for me, as a specialist in information and intelligence, is the authors emphasis on pursuing the goddess of knowledge so as to make the goddess of wealth envious (hence attracting wealth), and also his emphasis on how the raw material of the world is non-material, everything is a hierarchy of states of information and energy, a seamless matrix of nothingness. What I used to write off as gobblygook now has meaning to me.

The author's emphasis on Failure as good finally resonates with me. I have just closed the door on fifteen years of trying to help governments get in touch with the 96% of the information they do not and cannot steal, and as I reflect back on all that leads to the founding of the Earth Intelligence Network, I see a string of failures that led to this day:

Refused an offer from Lloyd's Bank Internation to join US Marine Corps
Average infantry officer, accepted by CIA because of background
Resigned from CIA when I found the clandestine service corrupt
Resigned from the Civil Service as founder of USMC Intelligence Center when the lawyers refused to let me run another conference on Open Source Intelligence (OSINT)
Abandoned effort to help US Government specificially in achieving access to the 96%v via a Multinational Decision Support Center, when too many factors precluded engagement.

Now I am here, about to begin my true life's work as intellligence officer to the five billion poor (and to those corporations that wish to follow the green to gold path, as well as those foundations that wish to use a global impact plan to armonize their spending for poverty, disease, environmental degradation and so on).

"Failing" at infantry, spying, bureaucracy was all a prelude to my life's work--I cannot yet say it is destiny, but my published books are now starting to show a pattern, and the next three (all free online as well as offered via Amazon, now, finally, "make sense:" Collective Intelligence: Creating a Prosperous World at Peace; Peace Intelligence: Assuring a Good Life for All; and Commercial Intelligence: From Moral Green to Golden Peace.

This book, which has two sections, one offering a page (sometimes more) on 26 steps, followed by one on 25 quantities of a unified field, is real and it is not at all squishy. I'd like to see more hard-nosed CEOs and others give this book a chance.

Some other items I have enjoyed over the years that you might like also:
Radical Man: The Process of Psycho-Social Development.
Public Philosophy: Essays on Morality in Politics
What the Bleep Do We Know!?

  2. Deepak Chopra in Creating Affluence writes about life and how you get what you want. Not only hard work and focus but by applying all the spiritual principles; letting go, surrender, faith, positive thinking, meditation and prayer. Creating Affluence is a guide literally from A to Z. And "Z" stand for the Zest of life. Staying upbeat and "facing life with abandon." The best part of this book is the daily reminder that we must stay strong and positive, give back to other people, and use our talents in the best possible way.
Ruth Frances Hoskins, Ph.D., LCSW, Author Dream Moments the Voice in Your Dreams, Prophecy and Intuition. [...]

  3. I love to hear Mr. Chopras talks, but his books, at least the ones I've tried to read, are not so interesting. He tends to go off on tangents and the result is confusion. He has a couple of novels out as well. Please, don't bother with these, especially if you're accustomed to great fiction. But I shouldn't talk, off on a tangent of my own. So back to this book. I didn't become affluent, did you?

  4. This book is simple and could be read in a very short amount of time... that is if you choose to finish it. I did not finish it. I just could not get into it. I loved The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success: A Practical Guide to the Fulfillment of Your Dreams and would recommend it to everyone. This book just fell short in my eyes.
