  1. "No Royal Road" is a wonderful book about the remarkable experiences of a young Hungarian girl who tries to escape from Communism, hoping to establish her new life in the new world - America. One of the most interesting aspects of the book is that it describes real events happening before, during and after the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. The combination of real historical events with an interesting personal story makes the book not only an appealing piece of literature but also an outlook into the life of the Eastern Europeans of the middle 20th century and the new problems thay had to deal with.

  1. Despite the title, this book covers a lot more than just the authoring of old Universal Studios screenplays. Curt Siodmak has strong opinions and can't help but mention them at any point in his story (even if he repeats himself a bit). Sort of a raw, stream of consciouss style with a bit more discipline than that. A really good read, covering WWII Europe, Hollywood, and the brothers Siodmak.

  1. Robert Benson's assured prose and eye for telling detail take the reader into a vanished time and place -- the Louisiana bayous of the author's youth. This is more than a straightforward memoir, though: it's a thoughtful, frequently moving investigation of the complex web of feeling that grows between father and son, the tragedies we inherit from our parents like family heirlooms. I have known Dr. Benson as a fine literature professor, a man of much dignity. Reading his book opened a door into his heart.

  2. A wonderful memoir of a son, husband and father focused on the 1940's and 1950's.

2 comments about Michael Landon's Legacy: 7 Keys to Supercharging Your Life.
  1. Cheryl Landon has endured tremendous amounts of physical and mental pain. She struggled through many of those years of pain with the help of her beloved stepfather, Michael Landon. When he lay dying of cancer, Cheryl promised him and God "to honor and protect his name and to continue his legacy-his work to secure a healthy future generation."

Michael Landon's Legacy is the fulfillment of that promise. But it's more than just a tribute to a man who gave a child unconditional love at a time when she most needed it. As Cheryl grew and learned, she discovered what she calls "7 Keys to Supercharging Your Life," based primarily on her observations of how Michael lived. The keys are simple: "Trust in God; Choose love over fear; Believe that daily miracles do occur; Take action now; Believe in truth between people; Build bridges; and Don't judge each other." She illustrates each key with personal stories from both their lives.

Cheryl Landon is now an internationally known speaker, writer, and teacher. Her message is always "create a healthier and safer world for our children." Like her famous stepfather, she believes in the power of love and that God resides in all humans. She seeks to help people focus on that love rather than on fear. She uses Michael Landon as an example-an abused child, he became a loving adult dedicated to doing good for others.

She has devoted her life's work to handing down "to our future generation a world where dreams to come true; a world filled with hope, unity and love; a world in which we do truly love one another." She uses intensely personal experiences from her life to teach others how to replace hate and anger with love, and to show how love continues even after death. Readers wanting to change their own lives will discover inspirational and powerful guidance in Michael Landon's Legacy.

  2. As a Michael Landon fan, I was totally disappointed in this book. Cheryl is riding on her father's name here. Her philosophy in this book has nothing to do with Michael Landon's legacy. After all the research I've done on him, I think he'd be disappointed with her far-fetched ideas. If this is the way she wants to live and believe, fine: If she wants to write a book about it, fine. But don't attribute it to Michael.

2 comments about The Hidden Curriculum.
  1. The back cover of the book states that "In this informative and entertaining behind-the-scenes look at the Rhode Island public school system. Perhaps the most glaring annoyance in this book is the use of capital letters FOR ENTIRE SENTENCES. More often than not, sections of the book seem to repeat what has already been said in a previous chapter. The only positive feedback I can give on this book is the fact that it is over quickly but not quickly enough to avoid being painful to read.

  2. The Hidden Curriculum's preface states that it was written as encouragement for anyone considering a career as a teacher by "discussing the truly great things about the profession". It then goes on to discuss the truly horrible things the author experienced and continues to experience as a student and especially, as an educator.

In fact, the book is a study in contradiction. Positive on the cover, (where Mr. Laporchio beams among his students), yet negative within. Positive in the subtitle (Life in the Public Schools), negative in the main title, Hidden Curriculum. As a result, the book lacks focus and cohesiveness;it is not so much about the hidden curriculum of the public schools in general, but the not-so-hidden political and disorganized nature of the Cranston School System. And chapters which deliver the promise to encourage new teachers occur at the end of this book.

This is unfortunate, because Mr. Laporchio has some wonderful sections describing his truly creative and out of the box ideas for creating student enthusiasm in his class. He introduces his Top Ten students and discusses his success as Yearbook advisor. If he had focused more on his classroom success and less on his colleagues' failings, Mr. Laporchio would have delivered a sterling example of why anyone would want to be a teacher. Instead, he has created a bitter diatribe against his colleagues, especially in chapters 3 "The Skeptical Inquisitors" and 5, "There's Never a Traffic Jam on the Extra Mile", that encourages one to run--and fast--into a different career. One cannot help but wonder if Mr. Laporchio is less concerned about the hidden curriculum in today's public schools than with his own hidden agenda, where he is, in his mind anyway, a martyr persecuted by a corrupt system instead of an educator fighting for the rights of his students.
