3 comments about Father's Rooms.
  1. Helen Resneck-Sannes' book is a tribute to love, the love between father and daughter, that is influenced but not diminished by Alzheimer's. Her tenacious love is in the details, the stories that make this book engaging.
I appreciate how she embraced the whole stories, not
shying from what must have been difficult to tell. Readers who accompany their parents on similar journeys will be lucky to have her words to companion them.
Author of: Writing and the Spiritual Life: Finding Your Voice by Looking Within

  2. Father's Rooms is a moving account of a father's last illness and his demise, and how it affects his family. It details his daughter's process as his primary caregiver, her interaction with her siblings, and how they all come to terms with their father's gradual loss of cognition. Although no two Alzheimer's patients are ever the same, this account will be helpful to any caregiver embarking on this perilous journey.
    Jill Ginghoffer, Executive Director
    Alzheimer's Association,Santa Cruz,Chapter

  3. I had the good fortune to read Father's Rooms in early drafts four years
ago and many scenes remain alive in my mind: the scene when Helen must leave her father at the door of the institution and he doesn't want her to go; the scene in the office of the funeral director where she and her brothers laugh about the kind of casket they'll choose and the director
joins them in their intimate humor; the scene where she cries to her father that she still needs him to be her daddy and, in spite of his deterioration, he holds her and comforts her. I laughed. I cried. I loved this book. You will too. Certainly anyone who has ever dealt with Alzheimers should read it. But everyone else should too. It's more than a story about Alzheimers. It's a story about the human heart.

    Ellen Bass
Author of: The Courage to Heal and Mules of Love

  1. CINDY: A STORY OF LOVE is just that--a love story, beautifully told by a father who so touchingly chronicled the last segment of his daughter's earthly journey. I am honored to have had a small part in the preparation of this manuscript.

1 comments about Precious in Her Father's Eyes: Carla Marie 1992-1995.
  1. As someone who has fostered a severely brain-damaged child, and who has spent a year working in a classroom for the severely and profoundly handicapped, I appreciated Cindy's candor as well as her viewpoint in writing about this sensitive subject. She consistently emphasizes what many people don't see about caring for these little angels -- that being required to give deeply of ourselves is a blessing. The book is written with tenderness and a mother's love, and also with humor and hope, and is a good read (though it's necessary to keep a box of tissues handy).

  1. This was a very inspirational book, about a man who had to sacrafice alot for this great country of ours! The tellings of what he had to go through, and how those friends, he met along the way, helped him get through it all, is just very touching! It tells apart of our history not many people know about, and gives the deserved recognition to those men who fought in the Korean War. It certainly deserves 5 stars! I could not put it down, once I started reading it!

  2. This book is EXCELLENT! It is one you won't be able to put down... It is remarkable that this is a true story it just shows what our soldiers have truly done for our freedom... This book is one of inspiration and courage... and once your through you will look at life in a whole new perspective!

  3. This book is one of inspiration and courage... it is one you can not put down... The events these men went through makes you realize what you have in life and how friendship really can overcome all obstacles... I recommend this book to everyone... once your done reading, the triumph of all vetrans will stay in your heart and mind for a lifetime!

  4. Mr. Sprouse's story is told is plain language, and holds a reader's interest. That means, unfortunately, that there were too many sad, scary, miserable, mistreated days to get through. The POW experience, particularly as a sample of the (under-reported and under-represented) Korean War story, is well-documented. The issue of "progressives" or collaborators is looked at without apology for naming names. The "and Beyond" part of the book is often forgotten more than the Korean War itself; Ted Sprouse and the authors speak for too many men. Not always uplifting, but a seriously good read.

5 comments about Morrie: In His Own Words.
  1. The shipping to Guam was VERY FAST although it was only USPS priority mail. If you are a Mitch Albom fan, this book is literally in Morrie's own words. So the style is not quite the same. If you just want a little more in depth of him (Morrie), this is must. My 17 yr old has to do a project quarterly and read all of Albom's books, and this is the last one.

  2. This book makes you realize that Morrie was such an amazing person. It makes you wish you had known him. But it is also more a book for a person who knows he is dying. Or for someone who loves someone who is dying, you could read it together. It offers positive thinking for a person who has already accepted his imminent death.

  3. I wish I had read this book when my husband was dying of ALS. It should be a must for everyone who'd been given a Medical Death Sentance and their family who have to stand by helplessly while their loved one diminishes and then dies before their eyes. It's compelling and would at least ease the sorrow that becomes part of their life.

  4. After reading the wonderful 'Tuesdays with Morrie' I was craving for more wise lessons from Morrie Schwartz. Eventually I came across this little booklet written by the man himself. It's filled with the same inspiring wisdom and lessons you'll also find in 'Tuesdays', but there's one big difference. In 'Tuesdays' Morrie was teaching his old student Mitch how to live a better life. As such that book is enormously relevant to everybody who reads it. In 'Morrie in his own words' the focus is more towards helping the dying and terminally ill deal with their situation, settle some important relational 'unfinished business' and reach acceptance and closure. About 75% percent of the book seems to be aimed at this specific group of people.

It still includes valuable lessons and especially Morrie's interpretations of Buddhist concepts appeals to me, but for most people this book will be less relevant than 'Tuesdays'. Having said that, Morrie remains a remarkable man and among his inspring lessons is one about accepting that we'll eventually all die, so we better learn to accept it and make the best of the days that are given to us. So, even the lessons in dying in this booklet will become relevant sooner or later. As such it certainly doesn't hurt to have this little booklet in your collection for when the time comes ...

  5. The book is a companion read of "Tuesdays with Morrie." Although both books cover similar material, the difference is the originality of the material. Morrie explains his prospective living and dying in addition to his other life experiences. The reader will get insight on such topics as "handling frustration" and "reaching acceptance" to "relating to others" and "being kind to yourself" or understand Morrie's view regarding "It's not too late to develop new friendships or reconnect with people." Or "It's not to late to...ask yourself if you really are the person you want to be, and if not, who you do want to be."
