- When we're sick, we need to think the doctor knows enough, and cares. But something went horribly wrong in the medical treatment of Monroe Hirsch. The change in his personality was sudden, unexplained, even denied by the health professionals who did know the reason.
This is a love story and true, told by Monroe's wife. Seeing the man who'd loved her replaced by a beligerent and distrusful stranger, she tells how she sought to find answers, and any way at all to help him. Winnie had every reason to expect competence and honesty from doctors, having seen it at work for so long. Monroe was an eminent optometrist, Dean of the School of Optometry at the University of California at Berkeley. Winnie had worked with him in his practice and knew the demanding standards he set for himself. But professionalism is like every other form of goodness -- an ideal to build again every day. The best of us admit to falling short somehow, daily. This story reminds us that some don't admit to falling short. Deliberate lies and false hopes make dirty wounds. The cruelest aspect of the deceit Winnie faced was that it turned her own strengths against her. In situations of alienation, fair-minded people look first to themselves. In the face of difficulty, responsible people try harder. With intelligence and courage, Winnie battled alone and lonely, often against herself, for something already lost. There's redemption here too. Winnie did find answers, and did have some last months of better knowledge and a kind of peace before her husband died. And now her story carries a powerful message. Even in a medical crisis, we must trust our own persistent convictions. And we're entitled to stay in control. I was moved by this book -- angered, inspired, saddened and empowered. I wish everyone, particularly every woman could read it.
- If you are a little suspicious of the medical profession and if you fear the day when you have to take a loved one to a hospital please read this. Or better yet, give it to whomever might be taking you. This is not only alarming but it is a wonderful personal love story. It puts it all in perspective. If you want to read a great book that nobody seems to know about, this is a great discovery.
- I find this book very inspiring. She's a very strong woman

2 comments about Passage Into Paradise: The true story of my own mother's struggle with Alzheimer's disease.
- You may have enjoyed Dorothy Womack's poetry in her Reflections on Marsha Penington's Alzheimer's Outreach, at A Window on My Mind, and in Alzheimer's Poetry at A Year to Remember. Now published as a book, her experience as her mother's caregiver is shared in Passage into Paradise. I was amazed as I read her story, which began years before mine, and continued several months after my mother died. I do not think I could have handled caring for my mother as Dorothy and her husband did. Long after her mother became bedridden and incontinent, still they cared for her at home. Dorothy's honesty in this book, expressing all the emotional turmoil she was going through, combined with her strong faith shining through, make this a story we become caught up in. I found I just had to read it all at one sitting, and it is a story that I will want to read again and again.
- Dorothy's book, Passage Into Paradise, is a beautifully written story of her courage, fortitude, deep faith and unconditional love for her mother as she cared for her. This is a must read book for all caregivers as she expresses all of her feelings and thoughts throughout the years she cared for her mother. Her deep faith in God will give a renewed courage to all who read it and discover that Light truly does come in the morning! If you are looking for truth, faith that God is with you for every step and hope .... this is a must read! I met Dorothy through the internet when I was also caring for my mother, and her wisdom, faith and love reached out and touched my soul while giving me courage to go on. Her book can do the same for you!

2 comments about Beyond the Reflection.
- In her first book, Sahara offers a naked reminder of what it means to grow up in today's world. She shares her own journey out of reckless adolescence into a life of meaning and ultimately peace. Written as if you were reading someone's private journal, Beyond the Reflection gives guidance and support and is filled with soulful poetry. This book is perfect for young adults going through tough times as well as parents of teens or anyone feeling depressed and hopeless. A definate read for anyone who has experienced "growing pains," young or old.
- This is one of those surprise books. The kind you don't expect much from and then wham! Not only is it a soulful, and sometimes heart wrenching story but the poetry is really exceptional. This young lady had the guts at a young age to turn her life around instead of continuing on a harmful and destructive course. This book certainly has a happy ending but only because the author had tremendous will power and forsight. I look forward to hearing more from this first time writer. She's a winner in a world of a lot of losers! I wish her well.

1 comments about Natalina.
- This story was obviously written from the heart. The love that Louis & Natalina shared was beautiful. Everyone should be able to find someone that lights up your life as Natalina did Louis. Intimate and touching, I found myself crying and applauding at the same time. Anyone who has had experience with love or with alzheimers would enjoy this book. Easy reading and enjoyable.
