- In times where family values are often questioned, this story demonstrates that a strong family can overcome any challenge.
It was amazing to read; the different struggles of two deaf parents raising 3 "hearing" kids and the creativity they used to overcome typical family problems. This book will really hit home, a must read for every family member!! Bravo!
- Silent Journey is a delightful look at the challenges of living with deafness throughout the 1900's. My heart broke with every story of discrimmination they faced, and rejoiced each time they overcame another obstacle. I couldn't put this one down and finished it in 2 days!

- Liebling writes with warmth and depth on a most difficult subject: donating a kidney to his sister. It is a surprisingly easy read for such a topic.
- I read this most sensitive book about the lives of both a brother who donated his kidney and his sister who was the recepient. The book reveals how the transplant effected both of their lives. This is a timely book since there are many more transplants today than when they went thru their ordeal. The book should be read by those who are about to be a donor, and those who will be a recepient. In addition it should be read by any close relatives and friends. There are many sensitive, revealing and beautiful passages The book was well written by Mr Liebling and is easy to read.
.
- This true story is told in a gentle, caring manner, and is easy to read for both young and old alike. Lawrence Liebling reflects on the conflict that he encounters about a decision that will not only impact on his life, but on his sister's and family's life forever. This story is about love, faith, courage and trust that every reader can relate to. It gives the reader a chance to reflect on his/her values. The author ultimately conveys the power of love through his story. Liebling's sensitivity and insights are meaningful, and touch the heart. The reader will reflect on the meaning of life and relationships, laugh and cry, and be touched by this beautiful story.
- This is not a clinical account of a kidney transplant. Rather, it is a very personal account of the author's experience with his sister back in the 1070s. Back then, such transplants were not nearly as common as today. The author recounts the toll his sister's kidney disease had on the entire family and what the family went through both before the surgery and in the remaining decades of his sister's life. One minor criticism, the author does not state which hospital the surgery took place in. I am interested in such details. Nonetheless, this is a very moving personal account of how the donor, recipient and family coped with kidney diseaes, the transplant and it's aftermath.

- Are you a healthcare provider caring for patients with traumatic brain injuries? Do you know someone who received a brain injury? If so, this book can help you understand just what exactly such a patient goes through. John Kennedy Rizzo experienced such an injury as a result of a motorcycle accident, and came thru to the other side(with a LOT of hard work). His story can help illuminate what patients cannot verbalize about their experiences; I encourage you to add it to your library.

2 comments about Second Sight.
- When Robert Hine was coming of age, he learned that, sooner or later, he would be blind. Instead of giving up, Hine went on to earn his maters degree and later his doctorate degree. He became a respected college professor, author, and researcher. Before age fifty, he was completely blind, yet he continued to work.
Fifteen years later, circumstances necessitated a risky surgery that couldn't have gone better. Hine's sight was restored. He shares the miracle of his instant return to the sighted world, taking readers along as he reacquaints himself with the visual parts of his life.
Hine demonstrates how truly relative "disability" is. WIth some sight, no sight, and restored sight, the author remains motivated and sucessful.
This book is both a personal journey and a manual on living with loss and the rewards of not giving up. Hine is a true hero. Amazingly he carries it all off without an ounce of pretention.
- This was a short book, for which I'm grateful. It would have been much more enjoyable if it was half as long. The aspects of going blind and than regaining sight many years later was intriguing, and those parts of the book I enjoyed. But the author spent (IMHO) much to much time talking like a philosopher, which made it an effort to read.

- My Fight to Survive, An Inspirational True Story by Lisa L. Valvano is truly an emotional work of art. This autobiography traces the remarkable life of the author, who suffered a tragic childhood accident that took away many of her physical abilities but left her with a strong spirit and an even stronger sense of faith. Her story is one of enormous pain and suffering overcome by powerful determination to achieve what seems to be the impossible. This well-written narrative welcomes the reader into the author's mind and heart. Ms. Valvano sends a message of hope to anyone who has ever faced any kind of adversity. The story emphasizes how precious life is and how important it is to make the best out of every moment. Rather than conveying a sense of despair, Ms. Valvano succeeds in her quest to enlighten and inspire the reader. I highly recommend this remarkable story.
- Reading Lisa's story helps one get your head out of the clouds and get a grip. This was an excellent way for me to recognize that my problems are miniscule and insignificant compared to others. I was both humbled and inspired by her book. Can't find any more work from Lisa.
