  1. Thank you, Aaron Alterra, for sharing your very insightful experiences while giving such loving care to your dear wife, Stella. Your touching recount of Stella's final days as a cellist and your countless successful efforts at preseving her dignity brought tears as I (a sexagenerian) empathized with your many dillemmas.

I would certainly recommend this book to anyone with elderly parents or who themselves have become caregivers.

  2. This is a most thoughtful insight from both the point of view of the Caretaker and the one for whom care is given. Many of your own thoughts, questions, fears, victories, frustrations and actual experiences are seen and lovingly, yet honestly, shared by a gifted writer. Thought provoking, calming, and a real companion for a Caretaker who feels alone -- as we all do from time to time. Well worth the read!

  3. I was very touched by the way he cared and loved his wife. He did a lot of trial and error and gave 110%.

2 comments about Voyage to the Island.
  1. This is the true story of a late-deafened woman, her hearing husband and two sons who move from Finland to the Carribean for two years. The book reads a bit like a diary; with day to day humor and struggle of being in a new culture, trying to figure things out, and feeling isolated from the deaf community and family back home. That's when Raija meets the American Peace Corps volunteer and his newly opened deaf school. She teaches children (age 12-16) their first language, and eventually takes one child into her home. This book is an interesting look at language aquisition, and also the power of community. Anyway, it's just a light and enjoyable read.

  2. I decided to buy this book because I have family that still lives in St. Lucia. The book actually speaks about them. I found it to be enjoyable reading and very enlightening. The pictures are informative but nothing like a "voyage to the island" itself. It can be a bit slow but definitely a good book to read at least once. Hope you enjoy.

  1. This is an excellent book....To me, loss of vision would be the worst disability to suffer.

Janet lost one eye as a baby due to cancer, and was told she would lose vision in the other eye in the near future. She was put into a blind school (which had a red door) when she was a child, and didn't understand why she was there. She was 33 when she finally lost her other eye - it had finally succumbed to the aggressive radiation that she was given as a child.

Janet was also adopted as a baby, and wanted to find her natural parents to see if the retinoblastoma was hereditary. When she was 18, she met her mother, who said she didn't want anything to do with her. Her father is a high-profile media personality in Australia. He finally accepted Janet as his daughter, and they now keep in regular contact.

This book is about Janet's journey through her childhood, and into adulthood with a vision disability. Worthwhile reading.

2 comments about Facing Fear: A Young Woman's Personal Account of Surviving Breast Cancer.
  1. "Facing Fear" is an excellent read for young women facing Breast Cancer. It is unique and refreshing because it is written from a young woman's perspective---and it reads like a novel! I recommend this book because it eloquently explains the emotional journey, the importance of support from friends and family, as well as the physical journey. It also gives some practical information about radiation and bi-lateral mastectomy with reconstructive surgery. While "Facing Fear" is not structured and written as a step-by-step guide, it is an excellent account of one woman's journey from diagnosis to completion of treatment. This book will give young women (and their family and friends) support and information about facing Breast Cancer. Bravo!

  2. The author was very descriptive beginning with her early detection all the way through her reconstruction. She covered every angle of her ordeal, which I found fascinating and so easy to understand. Unlike reading a 'medical book', this book expresses the author's thoughts and emotions which I found very comforting. Any questions I had in my mind were answered in this book. I felt like it was written by me/for me. Even the time frame was identical. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough! I high recommend it not only for breast cancer victims but also for friends and family. It will help them understand our fears and the physical aspects of dealing with this disease.
