5 comments about Elvis Presley: The Man, The Life, The Legend.
- This book by Pamela Clarke Keogh is, in many ways a condensed, water-downed summary of Peter Guarlnick's exhaustive and meticulously researched two-volume biographies on Elvis. I read Keogh's attractive coffee table-style book and noticed how much material she has virtually lifted from Guarlnick's books. Keogh does acknowledge Guarlnick as a source but, really, so much of the text is not her own.
The pictures are lovely, and I did enjoy reading the author's discussion of Elvis's sense of style. Elvis Presley is a cultural icon in our secular world and Ms. Keogh has some interesting comments in this respect.
Having just read Peter Guarlnick's biography on Elvis,I was keenly aware of how much of this book was simply a condensed copy of his detailed work. If you are looking for "the biography" on Elvis, I would recommend Guarlnick's work.
Keogh's book is a "coffee table book" - pretty pictures, easy read, fun to glance at. But, I give it a 2 star rating since the author made a HUGE mistake in my mind - she cited Elvis's birthday as "January 30" 1935. Any fan of Elvis knows he was born on January 8, 1935. I'm not sure how such a goof could be missed but there it is, in black & white. This error made me really doubt the content of the book - there is relatively little text - surely they could have proofed a bit better? It just makes me question the rest of book's biographical "facts" and interviews.
- I have read MANY Elvis books and everything you can think of. I cannot put this book down...I am amazed at the details, the dates, the inside stories...it is amazing and in a few hours I have read half the book, and it is 4am! GREAT!
- "Before Elvis, there was nothing," said John Lennon. He was referring to music. We all know the universe, earth and humankind existed before Elvis Presley. Lennon was right, though. Modern music began with Elvis. Before Elvis, music was meaningless and worthless.
Elvis Presley was born in Tupelo, Mississippi on January 8, 1935. His parents were Vernon and Gladys Presley. There was a twin brother, who died at birth. Elvis grew up in a two-room house which Vernon built. He was close to his mother, a relationship which defined his personality. His family moved to Memphis, Tennessee, when Elvis was 13. They moved into the projects. Elvis was a misfit at school. He wore flashy clothes and hung out on Beale Street. He listened to black musicians play the blues. He had rhythm. After high school, he took a job driving a truck for an electric company. He decided to record a song as a gift to his mother. He went to Sun Records in Memphis. Sun was owned by Sam Phillips. Marion Keisker, who worked for Phillips, saw something in Elvis. She suggested to Phillips that he work with him. Phillips put Elvis with guitar player Scotty Moore, bassist Bill Black and drummer D.J. Fontana. The result was That's Alright Mamma. Memphis radio stations picked it up. Other recordings for Sun followed, and Elvis caught on across the south. Girls loved him. They screamed and swooned. Parents detested his gyrations and called him vulgar. The new music was rock & roll. The older generation called it everything from "nigger music" to "devil's music." RCA purchased Elvis' contract from Phillips for $35,000. They got a bargain. Elvis had his first number one record in January, 1956, with Heartbreak Hotel. Others followed: Hound Dog, Don't Be Cruel, All Shook Up and Too Much. Elvis appeared on television, the Steve Allen and Ed Sullivan shows. Sullivan insisted he only be shown from the waist up. It added fuel to the fire. Hollywood beckoned, and Elvis made his first movie, Love Me Tender. In two years, he had laid the foundation for the music which would dominate into the 21st century.
- This book is the best of all books (about 20) I have read.
The photographs are also something uncommmon.
All fans should have them.
- I am a proud mother of 4 and very busy. I have always LIKED Elvis. I often asked my sons' teacher to describe more of what I knew or she told me great facts. I have little time to myself, but the teacher gave me the book for Christmas! I loved it! I wanted to read more but was so busy. I JUST finished the book and I loved the photos, the details of what I already knew and NEW information. This is great for a more casual fan I was told, and it is true! It focuses on the good (that is how the teacher is!) She purchashed many copies for people and I was a lucky receiver! This is a great book and a must have for new, casual or die hard fans (die hard is the teacher) and I am grateful for the book. I wish the author knew how great this book is and helpful to me. If it was good enough for the teacher to buy 2 dozen for gifts, it is well worth the money!

- Doug Kelly, a veteran Hollywood makeup artist, worked with and personally knew most of the major movie stars of his day, and in this great book reveals secrets and stories about them and his co-workers that will keep you intrigued and amused throughout the reading. Kelly throws some light on Hedy Lamar, John Wayne, Janet Leigh, Judy Garland, and many, many others, with truly historic recollections of some great times with some great artists. Doug Kelly also takes us behind the glamor veil and exposes the often-ugly underbelly of the movie "industry", with more than a touch of well-honed cynicism. This is a book you will read more than once, and recommend to your friends. I have, and I did!

5 comments about From the Piano Bench: Memorable Moments With Mobsters, Moguls, Movie Stars, and More.
- A very fun, easy read. Mr. Rossi's storytelling credentials equal that of his very impressive musical credentials. It's nice that Mr. Rossi had all these great experiences. It's a treat that he shared them with us. A delightful read for the musician and non-musician alike. We hope that he is considering a sequal.
- "From the Piano Bench" was filled with funny stories from page one. The author gives us a good glimpse of life from his professional perch. The stories flow along effortlessly with his wry wit and quirky style providing laughs all the way through. I never thought playing the paino for a living would be so much fun and lead to so many encounters with famous people. A good book for anytime reading!
- This is a new and refreshing book as told by a professional pianist. He describes his experiences meeting celebrities from the stage, screen, world of entertainers and absolutely blows away my prior images of loads of top name folks. Who would dream of meeting the likes of gangsters who are "nice guys"? Who would dream of literally running into (and running down) top drawer folks like Perry the Sleeping Prince Como, getting passes from Johny Mathis (another guy) and on and on. This is a very funny guy who tells one very funny story after another. What's new in the book writing scene? This author that's who. Roger Rossi.
- "From the Piano Bench" is a light, and easy read. What fun to confirm your suspicions about some stars, and gain new insights into others. I loved it. Marilyn Irr, author of "REVENGE", and "DISTANT COUSINS."
- This author really downplays how good a pianist and entertainer he is. I've read his book and he wants to sound like Joe Average piano pounder, but that's not true. He plays ANYTHING, yes ANYTHING. And he plays it well. I mean classics, jazz, cool, romantic, oldies, R & B, R & R, and country and whatever. And he plays them well. I've heard him play alone and with his cute wife Sal, and they are terrific.
But about his book---it's a rip! The guy has met, fallen on or over or into the lap of, about any sort of celeb you can name. He's done it graciously ( if occasionally clumsily) and the results have been hysterical. I mean this guy is as down to earth as they come, but he really has hobnobbed with the full range of celeb--Perlman to Dangerfield--and I mean up close and personal. He's writes a funny book chock full of cute stories and anecdotes. I think this book makes a great gift. I got my copy from my Dad who lives in Florida, and I couldn't put it down after I cracked the first page. A must read--fun book!

5 comments about Judy Garland: The Golden Years.
- I am always excited to see a new Judy item on the market; nice to see that people are still interested, as Judy Garland was the greatest entertainer. When I originally bought this book from Amazon.com, I was excited to also hear from Margaret O'brien. What a dear! However, the book jumps around too much....dates, movies, blurry photos are all out of context. It left me with no beginning, no middle and no end. Sadly to say, I was disappointed.
- This is squarely a terrific book on Judy Garland. I have been trying to get it for a while and finally succeeded. It was worth the wait. It is really, really good. It has more information than you could imagine. More photos, facts and lots of interesting material. Get it fast. You will love it.
- Judy Garland has, of course, been greatly overdone, but this author manages to present the actress and singer in an entirely new light. It is an interesting, enjoyable read. There are many new things presented and many new facts and many new pictures. There is none of the sensantionalistic stupidty that marks other Judy Garland books.
- I have read every Judy Garland bio out there. This is one of the top ones to read. Very well-done. Kudos.
- A nice look at a great woman. Thank you. I've already read it twice.

- It is a combination of graphics and photos. It has very eye catching and impressive graphics. Full of photos on airport environment, with 'industrial design' architecture and parts. If you like 'stainless steel' furniture, you will like this book.
The appearance of the 'MB' suitcase can be interpreted as sort of artistic performance. At 21 century, our living becomes more and more mobile. This book is a documentary for frequent flyers.
