5 comments about Fuqua.
  1. J. B. Fuqua is a very inspirational businessman. I enjoyed this book, but he gives very little detail. He mentions these big business deals but thats just it. He ONLY MENTIONS them!!! No doubt in my mind there could be a great book written about Mr. Fuqua, but in my opinion this is not it!

  2. Words of wisdom from a man with the experience to back it up. Though not always deep into the intricate details, Fuqua writes enough to let you have an understanding of how he got where he is today. What I learned from this book is that in business almost anything is posible if you are open to suggestions and can think of innovative ideas. I did not expect a step by step how to book but more of an outline for success and that is what I got. I would recommend this book.

  3. Considering the era in which we live, when it is better to make money than be honest, a truly principled man is a rare and valuable thing. J. B. Fuqua is just the kind of man we need in these trying times. He is one of the best examples we have today of a man who came from meager means to become one of America's top business minds. His philanthropic work alone merits attention, from establishing the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University to The Atlanta Botanical Garden. A book about a true American original!

  4. Yes, this is definitely a well written and informative biography of Mr. Fuqua. It is unfortunate though, that it has the word "how" in the title, as it does not tell you "how" he made his fortune, rather it tells you how HE made HIS fortune, (and that was by using other people's money). It is nevertheless a very good book, that has many smart ideas, as well as moves that he made in his life, which could be imitated, or expanded upon, by others, to fit their situation, and thereby they could possibly make their own fortune. (Case in point: living out in the sticks, nowhere near any library, he figured out a way to get knowledge about subjects otherwise closed to him -by borrowing books through the mail- and this was at a time when phones were almost a luxury!). It may not tell you just how to make a fortune, but it will probably give you a few ideas, or, pointers, to help you in that quest.

  5. I was given a signed copy of this book that I promptly shelved for about a year. Such was fortunate, I believe, because when I finally picked it up, the timing could not have been better.

Reading J.B. Fuqua's memoirs may not give you a "how to" guide to making money, but it most definitely gives you an idea of why Fuqua succeeded: drive. You learn in this book that Fuqua never read books for pleasure though he constantly read books for knowledge. Though I don't subscribe to this particular ideology 100% (maybe more of a 50% knowledge, 50% pleasure mentality), it's easy to see the underlying one-mindedness that such an attitude requires. Fuqua had a goal of being financially successful. I believe he accomplished that goal because he could not busy himself with any other ideas and his thirst was never quenched for success - this easily comes through in his book.

Everything told, Fuqua's story is enchanting because it is the story of a poor Virgina boy becoming a "mover and shaker" who runs huge companies and befriends Presidents. Read it and feel the urge to find a similar passion that would drive you so far ...

5 comments about After Capone: The Life And World Of Chicago Mob Boss Frank "the Enforcer" Nitti.
  1. Being interested in this book's subject matter - Frank Nitti, Capone, Chicago in the 1920's and 30's, etc - I bought this book simply on its title, having read no reviews nor hearing anything about it. After reading this book I am surprised that there hasn't been any fanfare or at least word of mouth recommending it, especially here in Chicago. This is an extremely well-written, interesting, engaging and entertaining book. First and foremost it is a biography of Frank Nitti(o) but that story is expertly intertwined with a narrative of Chicago politics, culture, crime and many of the associated personalities on both sides of the law - with some being on either side at any given time. I won't spend time (words) chronicling all that's in this book; the author does a much better job than I ever will. My point is simply this - if you have an interest in this "era" and its "players" you will not go wrong with After Capone. In fact I would recommend this as a "prequel" to Gus Russo's excellent book, "The Outfit"
The only negative is the number of typos. Such carelessness by a publisher in this day and age is simply astounding.

  2. This book finally reveals the life of Frank Nitto, Chicago gangster and eventual mob crime boss in that city after the IRS puts Capone in jail at Alacatraz. The level and amount of research in this book is amazing, Mars Eghigian has written a well balanced and meticulous book about Nitto who for so long has been in the shadow of Capone. At 528 pages it is a long read but worth the effort for true crime history buffs.

Nitto comes across as an intelligent, quick thinking criminal who also happened to be a workaholic, once invovled in the rackets, Nitto took to it like a duck in water, he was a good organizer and reader of human nature and was a steady backup to Capone who eventually came to rely heavily on Nitto's judgements and ability. The formative early years of Nitto's life is also covered well, especially his early years in New York and his relationship with his family.

The book explains clearly his role in the Chicago crime scene and there is plenty of information about his relationships with other criminals in the Chicago mob such as Capone, Ricca etc. The strange demise of Nitto and the downfall of some of his henchman is well covered and there is a good and well informed account of the eventual fate of the members of the the Chicago mob.

  3. A great book. First one on Frank Nitto. Must read Capone by Laurence Bergreen first in order to understand what is going on in this book. They really go hand in hand. Typo errors are bad but authors research is impeccable. Hope he will do another book.

  4. Mars Eghigian tirelessly did his research on this one and it shows. Nitti wasn't "the Enforcer" the press had bestowed on him. He was very trustworthy, but personally lacked the violence needed to balance the brainy part in organized crime. He had no problem delegating that part. Learn about his true origins, his family, wives and son. Eghigian dispells many rumors and halftruths concerning the man who was Al's choice to substitute him whenever he was away.
I really enjoyed learning new unknown facts about Nitti. This book has helped my website shine even more.

  5. This is a very well written and acurate account of Frank Nitto. Nitto is either typecast in movies or ignored in most accounts but Mr. Eghigian Jr. shows that he was in fact a major player in the Capone gang and the gang leader after Capone. This is a must read for those seeking the real Frank Nitto.

3 comments about Stars in the Corps: Movie Actors in the United States Marines.
  1. Thank you for making my father John R. Post so happy to have someone care about something that consumed a great deal of his young life. He was so thrilled to receive your book and share it with me and all his military friends. It was a time to be remembered - for the friendship - not the death. And he may be different but he remembers every name of every person he spent time with during WWII and the Korean Conflict. Thank you for acknowledging his memory and caring about his fellow man. Thank you.

  2. This badly written book about men who served their country well will disappoint those who care about the language as well as those looking for depth in the reporting of what 28 Americans who happened to be associated with the entertainment industry did when they were in the U.S. Marine Corps.

That is not to say that it is not worth reading, however. It's a quick read, and the reader will recognize the cotton candy style of the motion picture press release. But the surprises will keep you going, as you discover that Ed McMahon was such a good pilot of the Vought Corsair (the airplane that Pappy Boyington flew) that he became an instructor in World War II. When he finally flew in combat, it was in unarmed Cessna 180s flying observation over Korea -- extremely hazardous duty. You will also find out how Lee Marvin "got his ass shot off" in the World War II invasion of Saipan -- literally.

One thing any reader will recognize is the almost universal feeling on the part of the subjects that the "Corps made a man out of me" and the emptiness most of them felt when no longer a part of Corps.

In short, it's worth the money just for fun, but history it ain't. It's a nice little book about a few good men.

  3. STARS IN THE CORPS. is a most entertaining and informative book. Well written and researched, it deals with the military service of a number of movie stars that served in the Corps through America's wars. Among the stars profiled, readers will find the opening chapter particularly interesting, since it relates the life and service of a much-decorated Vietnam Marine, Dale Dye. In case the name is not familiar, he was the military advisor for the movies, PLATOON, SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, AND THE THIN RED LINE. He has also acted in a number of movies and television specials. The chapter about Lee Marvin is riveting. In every sense of the word he was a Marine throughout his life. His burial marker at Arlington reads, LEE MARVIN, PFC, U. S. MARINE CORPS. Many of the subjects and stories will surprise readers. What I liked about the entire read was the avoidance of tabloid innuendo. True to the theme set by authors Wise and Rehill in STARS IN BLUE, they focus on the service contributions of these men, which are often unknown to the American public.

5 comments about Kate Moss: Model of Imperfection.
  1. My friends and I just read this as part of our new "Fashion-Group Book Club"...I didn't dislike it as much as they did, but it does give one reason to marvel at how much completely unspectacular writing and recycled bollocks make it to publication. It even came to us recommended so I'm surprised at how just-not-good it is. Even the pictures, the best part, are all ones I swear I've seen a million times before. So, if you're looking for photos of Kate, I remember a book that came out on her in the nineties, a lot more expensive of course, but that one was excellent. "Model of Imperfection": not recommended!

  2. my friends all just read this and we're all disappointed in it, maybe someone who knows less about kate moss would get more from it. it IS articulate and factual, and it's not that it's BAD writing, it just didn't give us anything new to talk about. i wish there were other biographies - even if totally sensationalized! - about kate moss out there!

my recommendation? maybe a good beach-time or bus-ride read, but don't expect anything revealing.

  3. This book should be called "Johnny Depp" because it is more about her relationship with him than about herself. I expected a biography on her life but it's about how this super-waif got famous and then those who made her famous turned against her. Then the rest of the book was about her unhappy relationship with Johnny Depp. I really like Kate Moss and would like to have read a book about her...not her ex-boyfriend.

  4. of this book is one of the greatest authors ever for unauthorized biographies of super models who used to be famous.

I read the book, it was very informative, I liked it.

  5. Despite what people may say about Kate Moss she is an amazing model and fashion icon her style is like no one else out there and her bad girl image is also here. she is a business woman at that she not only has her own clothing line for Top Shop by Kate Moss . She also has her own fragrance. She is comming out with her own makeup line as well:). I really like her alot she is an amazing model and I adore her style.:) You will love this book she talks about her relationships with rocker Pete Doraty and the Actor very cute Johnny Depp.:) It is a good book.

  1. Me, as a fan, having nearly all written and printed things about MM, it's always a joy to find some new items. The pix in this book are incredibly wonderful. If you like MM and don't have this book, go on and buy! You really will like these fine pictures, honoring the beauty of this legend....

  2. I have a huge collection of Marilyn books and came across this one of an intimate photographic session Douglas Kirkland did with Marilyn for Look magazine's 25th anniversary edition in 1961. Very much worth the purchase for Marilyn fans - the photos are stunning, Marilyn is stunning! The text is sparse with the occasional typo...but you aren't there for the photographer's text, are you? Marilyn is as lovely as ever, and I would love to see this book in a larger format one day as the rather small format does not do the beautiful images justice. Great behind-the-scenes photos as well. Definitely a book I will be adding to my collection and looking through in years to come.

  3. If you are looking for something diffrent you have not seen well here it is. The Doug Kirkland sitting from 1961 just a year before Marilyn's death is one of her not so well known photo sessions but one of her most beautiful and sexy. She looks like a blonde angel in these poses! I love the pink outline in the book also. A must have for true Mailyn fans!

  1. The lives of every person who reads this book will be enriched regardless of their age!!!!! The book is informative, interesting and entertaining! Great gift for anyone in your life! If flows as you read it and you won't want to put it down! Treat yourself to a wonderful experience!!!!!

  2. This book is a wildly self-indulgent extension of every cliche in other people's books. It's truly banal. I agree, however, with the reviewer who said it could be worthwhile "for those who do not read a lot."

  3. Miss DeLoach truly got into the head of a truly remarkable man! The book has everything, facts, figures, sad and happy times - all laced with humor. Couldn't put it down!

  4. The book was bought for my son-in-law, but I couldn't resist reading it first. I am truly glad that I did as it is sure to improve my skills with dealing with people as it will yours when you read it!

  5. Reading this captivating book was a pleasure!!!!! I feel as though I personally know this wonderful man now. SUCH AN AUTHOR to capture him!!!!!

  1. i think that the book is very cute had alot of pics of paris i gave this as a present to my friend and bascailly it's a questinare book about yourself great as a present.

  2. This diary is so fun! It's awsome for someone who dreams of fame and fortune. It allows us to feel rich and famous, if only for a moment. Writing in this diary is so fun! It also cool that you have little questions on each page. If you love Paris Hilton, you WILL love this diary!!

  3. This as stated is more of a journal than a book, hence the title "YOUR heiress diary" It is fine for young girls and doesn't contribute to their delinquency as so many would have you believe. Teenage girls write in their diaries about boys, clothes and less meaningful aspects of life, it doesn't make this book bad nor does it make Paris vapid and useless. There are several pages devoted to careers, role models, family and inspirational quotes. My niece loved it!

  4. It's bucking the trend of beauty minded America. It proves that looks don't matter... just money and connections.

  5. I've read through all of the pages and written in quite a few. I would haven given 5 stars but some of the things (like top 5 favorite millionares to date ...or something like that) didnt relate.
A colorful and girly diary that is fun to fill out.
