5 comments about E.W. Bullinger: A Biography: A Biography.
  1. I read this book some years ago. It is a very good work that gives insights to the life of this man and encouragement by seeing his example. He died almost a century ago, yet his work is still alive. It is good to read his books but it is also good to know the life that produced them. After all, it is not only a matter of the work but most a matter of the life that produces the work, and this book will give useful insights to it

  2. A must read about a great man.

  3. This book gives great detail and care to the historical surroundings of a great era of Biblical truth. If you do not know who Dr. Bullinger is, don't worry because your Seminary professors all do. He stood for the fundamentals of the faith and is counted as faithful to the Word of God.

  4. Anyone who is a fan of E.W. Bullinger's work will appreciate this book! The author does an exceptional job portraying E.W. Bullinger's life from youth to the masterful bible scholar that he became. The book gives helpful insight to the man that gave biblical truth's to a Christian world that was severally lacking biblical accuracy and understanding.

E.W.'s work inspired many people including myself, to study God's Word with great care and great love. I've read many of his books, but knew very little about the man that wrote them until I came across this book. Naturally, I was very excited to find out that a biography has been written about him. And after reading this biography, I have even more appreciation and respect for the man whose books taught me the spectacular accuracy of God's infallible Word. A must have for anyone who is familiar with Mr. Bullinger's works!!

  5. This book is very helpful, if you are a Bullinger fan, in putting his life into it's historical and cultural context. It helps one understand the man better, and his passions. I was very sad to read that he died before he completed The Companion Bible, because one can almost feel where he stopped in that Bible. Very good reading.

  1. One of the most phenominal accounts that I have ever read about God's movement in someone's life (outside of the Bible)! Richard Harvey candidly relays through personal accounts of his own as well as his parent's lives. He demonstrates through these accounts that God is as powerful a God of today as He was back in the days of Abraham and Paul. I especially enjoyed Harvey's father's devotion to the word of God and how he lived that out. This book reads quickly and can be read at different intervals or at one sitting. After reading of Harvey's experiences, I found myself approaching the Lord more boldly through prayer and walking out my walk with Him more confidently in His ability to not only accomplish the possible but the impossible as well. I would recommend this book to anyone from the new believer to the seasoned saint.

  2. Dr Harvey has told much of his life story in a manner that makes you not want to put the book down until you have finished the magnificent story of our God and how he takes care of those children of his that trust Him completly. From stories of his godly parents, how he met his wife, and how God lead and guided them both through many years of faithful service to their Savior, Dr Harvey always points to the author and finisher of all who believe and trust in Jesus. It is book that every Christian family should have and read together around the table or hearth as he tells of God's provision and blessing on he and his family. It is a book to be read and re-read for years to come. You will never regret purchasing this book for yourself and everyone else you know.

2 comments about Wrestling with God: The Story of My Life.
  1. This is a wonderfully candid reflection on the life of one of the 20th century's theological trailblazers. Readers of Lloyd Geering's many books will know that whilst he was Principal of the Knox Theological College (Presbyterian) in sleepy Dunedin, New Zealand, he was charged with heresy for writing a paper that reinterpreted the story of the resurrection of Jesus in a symbolic fashion. At his church trial in 1967 he was exonerated of the charge. He soon published an expanded version of his thoughts in "God in the New World".

The strength of "Wrestling With God" is that Geering gives us (for the first time) a complete background to the development and maturing of his theological ideas. By the early 1970s Geering was effectively forced to resign from the Presbyterian church, realising that if he were to change people's thinking about God it would have to be outside the traditional religious context. Accepting an offer from Victoria University in Wellington, Geering became the first Professor of Religious Studies in a secular New Zealand university. For the next decade and a half, Geering exercised a key role in the development of a superb department dedicated to the study of all religions from a humanist perspective.

Geering continues to live in good health and has published a series of excellent books (including "Tomorrow's God") to inspire those of us who consider ourselves to be exiled from the church. He is an active member of the Sea of Faith movement, a good friend of radical theologian Don Cupitt and has close links with the Westar Institute in California.

  2. This book tells a man's story, from childhood in the Depression to high honour in his native New Zealand. He proved a bright student and became a Presbyterian minister, whose studies of modern scholarship brought conflict with those who took biblical stories literally. A trial for heresy ensued. He was vindicated, but moved to teaching religious studies at university level.
Two other themes warm this story and inform it: the author's family life and his growing concern for the environment.
This is a book to encourage many (but especially those of a Christian background) who seek a modern way of faith.

3 comments about RICHARD SIBBES.
  1. The "Sweet Dropper," as the heavenly Doctor Sibbes has been called, will live up to his name in this finely written and meticulously researched book. Mark Dever himself may well deserve such a moniker, being one of the few scholars (this is his PhD. dissertation from Cambridge) who can speak as eloquently as he writes. Anyone who has had to crawl through the desert of arid scholastic tomes, or swim the oceans of pedantic language, will find Dever's work a delightful exception.

The book is divided into two parts.

Part one is biographical material. While the writing itself is lively enough, sadly, the subject matter is not. Alas Sibbes was no Bunyan. But Dever does the historical reader a favor by revealing a couple of overlooked facts, correcting repeated mistakes of former historians. Sibbes was neither the disenfranchised preacher of lore, who lived out the remainder of his life in obscurity, nor was he a rebel-rousing nonconformist, but rather a moderate Puritan, more the reformer rather than a revolutionary.

Part two explores the theology of Sibbes, appropriately distinguishing him as one of the last of the great English reformers. The author highlights several salient features of Sibbes as a Reformed theologian. Of special interest, Dever adroitly dispels the misconception that Sibbes was an irrational or even an a-rational mystic. The "Sweet Dropper" was nothing of the kind but rather an affectionate theologian, scrupulously concerned with the centrality of the heart and the proper role of the conscience, specifically an educated one.

This reader came away with three specific encouragements:
    1. Sibbes believed that godly preaching was the salvation of the Church of England. So should it is for any church in any generation.
    2. Sibbes was a reforming conformist. He was a hesitator and a questioner but not a dissenter. Rather than separate from the established church, he elected to remain, attempting to bring reform from within. For those pastors and church leaders who labor in non-Reformed churches or denominations, his example will be of encouragement. Although history may show that his endeavor was actually an idle venture, such warm-hearted commitment will loom as a grand and noble gesture in the light of today's rabid transience and hyper-individualism.
    3. Many voices today are clamoring for a new Reformation. As great as the need may be, much is cool, calculating, and highly polemical. Sibbes was a doctor of the heart. His tender, warm-heartedness needs to be rediscovered. Sibbes was the England of his day, what Jonathan Edwards was to America, both sharing a mutual concern for true religious affections.

A fresh look at the life of Richard Sibbes may well rekindle a warm-hearted passion for the gospel, based upon the great doctrines of the Protestant Reformation. This truth on fire was the hallmark of English Puritanism. Mark Dever has done a great service in reminding his readers of this fact.

  2. A great look into the life of Sibbes. His 7 volume works are a treasure chest of devotion and spiritual encouragement. This book does a great job in painting a picture of Sibbes beyond his works. I would highly recommend getting the 7 vol. works as well but certainly get the cheeper cd-rom version from richardsibbes.com.

  3. Pastor Mark Dever, author of "Nine Marks of a Healthy Church," originally penned "Richard Sibbes" as his doctoral dissertation, then revised it for this book-length edition.

In the first half of his work, Dever summarizes the life and influences of Richard Sibbes. It is in the second half of the book that Dever excels. His explication of Sibbes affectionate theology demonstrates thorough research and accurate understanding. The only exception to this is Dever's summary in a footnote that for Sibbes "imagination" is similar to what we would call "emotions" today. Actually, in Puritans such as Sibbes and Edwards, the imagination was a rational faculty of the soul, deeper and more primary than the emotions. This interpretation not withstanding, Dever's work is an excellent secondary source for understanding the life, ministry, and theology of an oft-neglected English Puritan.

Reviewer: Dr. Robert W. Kellemen is the author of "Soul Physicians," "Spiritual Friends," and the forthcoming, "Sacred Companions: A History of Soul Care and Spiritual Direction."

1 comments about The Rebbe's Daughter.
  1. This beautiful memoir opened a window into a world that I knew once existed, but that I had never actually seen before. We have all heard rebbe stories, have learned from the books left by these men, and have read of the lives of their followers. This, however, is a glimpse into the private lives of the aristocrats of European Hasidism. I do not use the word aristocracy lightly. The world of European Hasidism was highly stratified. The Rebbe's Daughter was top drawer. She lived in a large compound of servants, storerooms, and guest rooms for visitors to her father. There were coachmen, cooks, and governesses. There was no idle luxury. Every member of the rebbe's family lived a life of constant and devoted service. They served the Rebbe's followers, but also, and far more importantly, they served God.

Devotion to Torah pervaded every aspect and every moment of life. There is a kind of awe-filled beauty to a life in which every action, every thought is examined and consecrated to divine service. Devotion to Torah was so complete that even in the icy Polish winter the family shunned clothing made of wool. Better to shiver in silk and cotton than to risk a chance linen fiber that may render a woolen coat forbidden shatnes.

I cannot decide which aspect of the Rebbe's Daughter is more remarkable. The way it shows us a vivid picture of a vanished time and place, or the way it opens before us the way of thinking of a mind totally devoted to Torah.

2 comments about Vincent De Paul: The Trailblazer.
  1. The author faithfully depicts the life of this 17th century saint without omitting a few inconvenient events that took place during his youth. This is a detailed and engaging narrative of a person that lived in turbulent times and that rose above his failings to become a true credit to France and to Christendom. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Read it; you will profit from it.

  2. Wonderfully detailed and insightful biography of St Vincent de Paul. Well-researched and examines the man behind the myth. The book divides Vincent's life into three sections and chapters which are in chronological order. Has a great timeline and appendix/notes (with references) at the back which gives a detailed background of the political events and important people that influenced or was associated with Vincent and his work. There is also a helpful index at the back. This is a great, enjoyable read for both scholars and those who merely wish to read for leisure as it is academically sound without being dry. Recommended for those who are interested in learning more about this great saint.
