1 comments about Into All the World: Four Stories of Pioneer Missionaries (Heroes of the Faith (Barbour Paperback)).
- This little volume contains four stories of people in diverse locations and from varying denominational backgrounds who worked to promote the Christian faith among other peoples. These are the very brief biographies of Christian missionaries. If you are looking for a deep study of one or all of those featured here, you should look elsewhere. If, however, you are either looking for a simple introduction to mission history or want to use it in homeschooling teens, then buy this book. Hey, it's cheap and you can pass it on when you're done with it.

5 comments about Darrell Waltrip One-on-One.
- By working with a winner, Jay Carty has another winner!! In this book, the faith of DW comes forth to show that he is not only a winner on the track, but more importantly he is a winner off the track with his wife and kids and most importantly with the Lord!
- As an Author, Coach, and Motivational Speaker I read alot of books about people, their motivations, and their relationships. Darrell Waltrip One-on-One is a straightforward statement of faith and inspiration by a NASCAR Champion working with his co-author, Jay Carty, a former NBA player and traveling preacher.
One-on-One consists of 60 daily devotionals. Each devotional starts with a life lesson by Waltrip and ends with a personal or biblical support by preacher Carty. Scripture readings are included for each day.
The stories are informative, educational, and inspiring.
- There's Darrell learning a lesson about foolish decisions that cost him a race, a car, and time in the hospital.
- Waltrip's common bond with his "frienemy" Dale Earnhardt, scripture verses written on duct tape provided by Darrell's wife Stevie before each race.
- The miracle healing of Darrell's arm after a wreck in 1990.
- The value of keeping focused on the big picture to win at racing and in life.
With each Waltrip story there's a story by Carty that serves to clarify, explain, and educate about the topic of the devotional.
If you're looking for an inspiring, motivating, and faith filled book written from a unique perspective then I recommend you buy a copy of Darrell Waltrip One-on-One: The faith that took him to the finish line.

- DW and Jay Carty make a great team in this super devotional.
- Having read other Jay Carty books, I knew I had to read this one and I was not disappointed. This is the sort of inspirational book that one can cycle through over and over and never cease to be inspired.
Way to go Jay another outstanding book!!!!

- Having read several of Jay Carty's books now I have to say he is an incredibly inspiring writer and person to say the least. I am so excited each month as I check for new "stuff" from Jay Carty as it is always refreshing and different yet always connected to God with a three stranded cord. If you haven't been a reader of his books for long there are many to choose from and this writer never stops searching for Gods will in his daily efforts to continue to provide hearty reading material for all groups and all stages from salvation, and growth to a mature level of one's spiritual walk. I highly recommend anything he puts his hands on because I know the hand of God is on him. Some of what I have read and or listened to on tape are:"Discovering your natural talents", "Counter Attack: taking back ground lost to sin", "Playing with fire", "Something's fishy Getting rid of the carp in your life","Coach Wooden One on One", "Coach Wooden's Piramid of success", Darrell Waltrip - One on One, "Mike Singletary- One on One" all keeping me captivated from cover to cover!

5 comments about Burnt Bread and Chutney: Growing Up Between Cultures - A Memoir of an Indian Jewish Childhood (Ballantine Reader's Circle).
- This book was a wonderful read, and introduced me to the overlooked Indian Jews. Her descriptions of living in virtually a dual lifestyle were very vivid and educational to say the least. I look forward to more releases by Carmit Delman.
- The book itself was very unappealing to me and the text is rather bland. Overall the book was just not as well written as it could have been, sometimes contradicting and overworked. I would not recommend this book. Readers Beware.
- horrible, self-involved memoir, supposedly about growing up Indian Jewish American, but really about me me me. Nasty family skeleton I didn't want to know about from grandmother's generation. I didn't finish and threw it out - something I never ever do. I didn't even want to give it to the library.
- This is a very interesting book! Talk about your culture clash and your family secrets! Like many children of mixed cultural backgrounds, Carmit found it a bit difficult to fit into either. But it was more difficult because she was a minority within a minority, a dark-skinned, South Asian who "didn't look Jewish", and an Indian whose family had a different religion and different traditions from the Hindu majority. As a child, her grandmother makes her promise that she will always return to the Bene Israel, and she does.
Her family history, too, set her apart. Her grandmother was betrothed to a man who turned out to be an alcoholic. This put an end to the engagement, but it also made her grandmother practically unmarriageable. Until her sister's husband offered to take her as his second wife. He treated her and her daughter very differently from the way he behaved towards his first wife, being abusive, forcing her to live in poverty while her sister lived in luxury. The family's condescension towards Nana-bai and her descendents continued into the author's generation.
While I wasn't terribly impressed with the author's writing style (I thought she jumped around a lot, among other things), the book is well worth reading for an understanding of the difficulties of growing up in a multi-cultural household, of being "odd girl out", as well as to learn a little bit about this small, perhaps dying, segment of Judaism. I would, in fact, have liked to have learned more about Bene Israel, its history, how its practices differ from mainstream Judaism, but I guess that would be another book!
- A very different take on growing up Jewish in the United States. You won't find the usual lox and bagels stories here.

5 comments about Life on the Fringes: A Feminist Journey Towards Traditional Rabbinic Ordination.
- This is a book I could never before have read with an open mind.
Fifteen years ago, I'd have dismissed Ner-David as an apologist for Orthodoxy, trying to cram modern sensibilities into a hopelessly outdated mold. Ten years ago, during my own tumultuous "return," I'd have sneered at her willingness to entertain thoughts of mixed seating, uncovered hair and egalitarian prayer. It's only now, I think, that I'm ready to hear the honest questions Ner-David and others like her are asking and to understand that the Judaism we share is resilient enough to answer to -- and thrive from -- challenge and diversity. Ner-David's narrative, interwoven with threads dealing with her own physical frailty, tells a story not of a senseless rebellion against Orthodoxy but of a young woman's awakening to a deeper, more genuine love of her tradition. I wish Ms Ner-David a Yasher Kocheich -- may she never stop asking.
- A huge Yasher Koach to Haviva Ner David on her fantastic exploration of post-denominational feminist Judiaism. This is a wonderful book for anyone struggling with their own place within the traditional Jewish community. I am so glad to have read this book.
- This fabolous book is an private view into the world of an orthodox feminist that should be required reading for all women and men especially Jewish girls in Jewish day schools who have questions about feminism and how to still be observantly Jewish but don't know who to turn to. I can't wait until my daughter is old enough to read this book. Robin Davina Meyerson, author of A Son Returns; True Stories of Serendipity and Divine Intervention
- This is a serious, reflective work on a modern woman's journey to find equality within traditional [read Orthodox] Judaism. The author lives in Israel, where the secular and religious world are much more polarized than in her native USA. Each chapter focuses on one issue - Halakhah, Mikveh, Torah, God - and her efforts to integrate an egalitarian practice in her daily life. A thoughtful work for readers who are serious about women's roles in traditional Judaism.
- I read this book as part of a series on Jewish women pioneers in the rabbinate for my Jewish Renewal women's havurah. We liked the book, and respected Ner-David's commitment and fighting spirit in her pursuit of Orthodox ordination. She writes beautifully and perceptively about spirituality, her stormy adolescence, and her gradual evolution into a female Orthodox rabbinical student.
But as mostly non-Orthodox Jewish feminists, we were sometimes baffled by her persistence in trying to gain acceptance from an Orthodox community that seemed to mostly want her gone and was frequently very cruel to her.
I kept thinking --- "why doesn't she just get ordained as a Conservative rabbi? why throw herself against a brick wall?" Also, the parts of the book where she did technical analyses of the Orthodox laws of family purity, the mikveh, male rabbinical control of Orthodox women's lives, etc. were tedious and baffling for non-Orthodox feminists --- I kept thinking "this stuff is really offensively medieval --- why do you put up with it in the 21st century?"
But --- that's just my bias. The Orthodox feminists (see the Jewish Orthodox Feminist Alliance at www.jofa.org) have built a strong and viable women's movement of their own, and as an Orthodox feminist, Ner-David commands my respect for her willingness to stay and fight on her own turf, and we share a passionate commitment to Jewish prayer and spirituality.

2 comments about Mission Legacies: Biographical Studies of Leaders of the Modern Missionary Movement (American Society of Missiology Series).
- Mission Legacies is an attractive, durable hardback book of missionary biographical articles published by the American Society of Missiology through Orbis Books. It is divided into several major divisions: "Promoters and Interpreters," "Theologians and Historians,""Theorists and Strategists," and "Administrators." The chapters of this book first appeared as articles in the "International Bulletin of Missionary Research" beginning in 1977. Chapter assignments were made in a "serendipitous fashion over a period of about twenty years", as editors chose well-known contemporary church historians to write the biographical profiles.
Some of the famous 75 names are from the late 1700's, but most are from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. They were chosen without regard for disciplinary, national, or denominational backgrounds, though there are only six women and six representatives of the two-thirds world among them. This will no doubt be different if a later edition is published. Though the articles are scholarly, they are very readable and interesting. This will serve primarily as a reference book, but lovers of world missions and biography will find themselves often dipping into it for information and inspiration. I was pleased to find such diversity as Pius XI and William Carey, such educators and promoters as A.J. Gordon, John R. Mott and W.O. Carver, and such famous missionaries as David Livingstone, Hudson Taylor and Lottie Moon. I was glad to see historians like Kenneth Scott Latoureette and Stephen Neill, such innovative missionaries as Frank Laubach and E. Stanley Jones and such missions strategists as John Nevius, Roland Allen, D.T. Niles and Donald McGavran. In these pages, students of world Christianity "can gain insight into the spiritual and human dynamics that produced the modern Christian missionary movement". This book, now in its fourth printing, should be of interest to all students of World Christianity and Mission.
- This is an excellent resource for those interested in the development of modern Mission theory. The book is produced in a concise dictionary format, with articles on over 70 prominent figures from a variety of traditions. Each article provides a biographical overview of the subject personality, a summary of their main contributions to Mission, and a discussion of their central writings. Articles conclude with a select bibliography of foundational sources that provides the reader with an excellent starting point for further reading and research.
Because the book focuses upon those in Mission who have left a literary record, there are few women who are examined in these pages. Women missionaries (generally) tended not to write treatises on mission theory and practice. So, even though they were central to Christian Mission during the time period covered, they are virtually absent from this volume. This should not be counted as a fault, however. Rather, the reader should keep in mind the limits of what the book covers. This book should be in the library of anyone interested in Christian Mission. Excellent.

- This book "Breaking the Silence" is well written. Excellent! Excellent! Excellent! Thanks Pastor Anderson for your courage on such a sensitive matter that so many Christians need to deal with, and take their head out of the sand.
Thanks!!!!
- Interesting an informative book regarding as well as brutally honest an courageous regarding Pastor Anderson's addiction to Porn and struggles to maintain his recovery .
The section regarding triggers and high risk situations is an excellent one such as mentioning Computer Sites to avoid.
- This book was real...it touched upon things that real people need to know to heal. There were great suggestions and "road maps" to help other men who suffer from the same temptations. Thank you Bernie, for changing our lives. God Bless you and your family!
- This book is for everyone. Pastor Bernie is a brave man for coming out and sharing his experience. I know this book will touch someone enough to admit they have a problem and seek help!

3 comments about Whither Thou Goests! You/ve Got To Be Kidding.
- I have been a long time fan of Ms. Thornton & always look forward to her newest publications. As a Psychologist and a Social Worker, this book gives a human perspective of the struggles of being thrust into a position that Ms. Thornton did not feel prepared (A minister's wife). She describes her ordeals with humor, but also with some pain. If I was teaching grad students in psychology or social work, I would have this on my mandatory reading list. The author's words are a macro and micro of our society, not only in the 1970's and 80's, but also are applicable today. Ms. Thornton's words apply to everyone. Great reading for any age. Enjoy!
David C. Mayer, Ph.D., LCSW
- These essays will have you giggling aloud at times, rejoicing at the changes in our society at others, and just plain counting your lucky stars for family and friends most of the time. In the fine tradition of Erma Bombeck, C.G. Thornton finds the universal humor in her particular life challenges. Though the book details her struggles to accept her role as a minister's wife, anyone anywhere who has felt out of place or uncomfortably challenged by a new situation can find humor and insight aplenty in these easy-to-read, bite-sized chunks of a wonderful woman's life story.
- The United Methodist Women's Reading Group has given this book an honorable "Recommend Read," and it is such a deserving book by such a deserving author. Carolyn Gray Thornton writes a weekly column, and she is the author of 3 other titles, and has co-authored a 4th book. She is a distinguished writer of great merit, and her work is getting an amazing amount of attention. Ms. Thornton is a Methodist minister's wife, and this book highlightes, with humor and grace, her journey through life and travels living with her husband and raising her children while being involved in the church. Classy and wonderful, Ms. Thornton is an amazing author with an immense talent. 5 stars to Whither Thou Goests. Best News.

1 comments about Good St. Anne.
- I have owned this booklet for several months now and purchased it after making a pilgrimage to the Shrine of St. Anne near Quebec. There I received an awesome miraculous healing from Jesus through the powerful intersession of His Grandmother, Good St. Anne. The first half of the booklet is filled with a history of St. Anne and the Shrines in her honor. The last part of the booklet is filled with many prayers in honor of St. Anne and to obtain special intentions through her powerful intersession. I used the booklet on a regular basis and I feel certain that you willalso. I feel confident that you will find much comfort in the pages of this booklet and that you will benefit very much from many graces you will receive from God through the intersession of Good St.Anne, mother of Mary and grandmother of Jesus. God bless you all.

2 comments about William Tyndale (Heroes of the Faith).
- This is a wonderful book. I have never read anything so well writen. There are even explanations for the less common words right next to the word instead of having to go to a dictionary or the back of the book.
Very honest writing they always tell you when something is speculation and not proven fact.
Lots of information about the people surrounding the main subject, I really couldn't put this book down. Only took me a day and a half to finish it even with working full time and household chores.
I plan to read many more from this series.
Well worth the price.
- From the cover (loosely): Five hundred years ago, no one had a copy of the Bible in the English language. One man dreamed of spreading the gospel by putting the Bible into words the English peasant could understand. Then church officials objected to his work, Tyndale determined to continue his translation efforts, no matter what the risk. In spite of persecution, hunger, and hardship, Tyndale persevered with his mission until he was betrayed, arrested, convicted as a heretic, and burned at the stake.
