- My name is Il-Kyu Han and I am an AP English Literature teacher at a top preparatory school in Korea. As a major work for the study of postcolonial literature, I have had the kids read both the book and film versions of "The English Patient." This book is very helpful for teaching students the power of poetic license where true history is modified into a work of fiction. It was also a great opportunity for me to work on the ability of students to compare and contrast the characterization of the fictional Almasy to the real one. I strongly recommend this book as a cross-reference to Ondaatje's masterpiece.

- One of the best books I have read in many years-- that's real--a life that is so absorbing that I am following up people and events, that are mentioned in his life that prove to be as dramatic; real; and harrowing as his own.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT -- EXCELLENT READING

4 comments about Drafted.
- An excellent book! It is full of action, laughs and suspense. Written in a manner to show the reader a peek into his life and the environment of war.
It is not for the squemish as is very graphic. Starts out in his childhood and then bamm, he is inducted into the army where his life is altered forever.
Each chapter is a short story of events that occured. And the pix he has added in make it that much more interesting to read.
LKS
- I bought this book recently after hearing so much about it. It starts out very funny and enlightening and then 'wam bam'. It will hit you between the eyes! It will open your eyes up to the horrors of war and the graftic speech he uses, which I'm sure that is exactly the way it was. It is a book that will hold your attention and you don't want to put down!
- The life of a child. Helping him walk, watching him run, letting him go. Seeing him off to a senseless, heart-breaking, gut wrenching war. I felt it, while reading Drafted, in my mother's heart. Do I understand war? Do I understand Men? I know what it made me feel...
Great writing. I thought I was right there with you, Bill, except that I couldn't have handled it.
A BIG THANKS!!
- This is a great book! Bill, you did a wonderful job expressing your thoughts and experiences. I know that your son, Whitey, is proud of you as Tracy and Linda also are. We are ALL proud of you!!

1 comments about Mig Alley to Mu Ghia Pass: Memoirs of a Korean War Ace.
- MiG Alley To Mu Ghia Pass: Memoirs of A Korean War Ace is the military memoir of Cecil Foster, a young man born into poverty and hardship, and who joined the Army Air Force in 1943 as a private, eventually retiring in 1975 as a lieutenant colonel. Foster served a multitude of tasks during his Air Force career, but perhaps the most outstanding and remarkable part of his autobiographical history was his service as a high-scoring ace pilot in the aerial battles of the Korean War. Foster's record of nine destroyed MiGs earned him 12th place on a list of 38 aces. Each of the aircraft he destroyed was shot down in a section of airspace called "MiG Alley," which runs along the Yalu River that separates North Korea from China. MiG Alley Mu Ghia Pass is an involving, personal look into one of the countless people who have staked their lives to serve and protect the United States of America. Highly recommended for students of military aviation history in general, and the Korean War in particular.

5 comments about Returning Son: From Bagdad, Kentucky to Baghdad, Iraq (and back).
- Returning Son is colorfully written and so highly detailed that you are pulled into the Cassedy's lives as if you are part of the family, feeling every emotion. Returning Son teaches us the value of strong family foundations and the importance of interaction with our children as parents. This is a magnificent story about an average American family and their struggles to survive. This is a story about extraordinary parents that ask their children to mold their futures by answering 3 important questions. This is absolutely a 5 star book that should be read by all, especially to find out the 3 questions.
- I am impressed. Returning Son is one book I could not put down. It is about what is happing TODAY! The real world, not fiction. It is a book that positively pulls you in to the story and puts you right there. Returning Son involves everyone. Those who have been in the military, or those who know someone in the military. Even those who just have an interest in the war in Iraq. The author gives you insite on what is really going on in boot camp and then in Iraq. The hell, frustration and family ties. It's about TODAY. A book like no other.
- I am reading this book! How wonderful to see a book written with true facts of the life of the Military. Everyone in America should read this so they can fully appreciate what the troops go through for America. I recomend this book to everyone I see. It is a book of the times and struggles of Pure American Family. A Must Read!
- This is a wonderfully written book! It will touch you emotionally while it educates you about the things our military men & women are facing today. The author also takes you back to a time in the past when our military had no support from home. The "returning son" shows us that marines & soldiers are not always kids who couldn't do much else, he's an intelligent young man that could have done anything and yet he CHOSE to serve his country. This book will enlighten you about what it feels like to have a family member serving. It's a good read for men, women & teenagers.
- This book tells it like it happen last year,I was there myself with 1 Mar Div.I am currently in Fallujah,Iraq with Lcpl Cassedy.Every American parent that is planning to let their child join the USMC should read this book first.Semper Fi

5 comments about Basher Five-Two: The True Story of F-16 Fighter Pilot Captain Scott O'Grady.
- very good book! exciting and full of action. once i started ready it i didn't want to stop. i think everyone should read it.
- I thought this book was very well written for a number of reasons. First of all, the author puts together all the events in logical order so that the reader is not confused. The author also puts cliffhangers at the right time (personally, I didn't like it, but it didn't matter). That keeps the reader on edge to hurry and get through the cliffhanger chapters to get back to the action. At least that's what I did. Also, it doesn't bore the reader. Even though the author is talking about how he had to lie in a hole for most of the day, he always writes something new that keeps readers reading, like him eating his first meals on the run, or him hurrying to find a new hole-up spot. Lastly, I love the fact that he didn't glorify himself for escaping capture and call himself a hero. He gives credit to the real heroes; the men that rescued him.
- Captian Scott O'Grady , a F-16 pilot, gets shot down over enenmy tertory. This book tells his epic story of ecape form the whole ordeal. The author tells it so well he makes you feel like you are there! I was amazed at the amount of flash backs to his family and friends back in the U.S. that worryed so much about him. As he tries to ecape, he encounters many chalnges like wind, rain and eating ants. Most of all he tries to evade the Bosnian Surbes. Capt. Scott O'Grady was right, NATO is awesome!
- A great childrens book, for grades 5-8. Well written naritive about survival, without any political or religious undertones found in the other story by Scott O'Grady. As a high school teacher I recomend this story for those younger children that seem more interested in playing cops & robbers than reading a book.
- I had checked out this book (in a book-on-tape version) at the library, and it was the BEST book I had listened to in a LONG time!!! I listened to it 6+ times!!! That's how good it was!!! It was very exciting, adventureous, and it wasn't the least bit boring. I'm very glad I got this book. I liked it because of all the planes and because of the things he ad to do to survive. It was amazing to hear his story of survival. I highly recommend this book!

1 comments about Commandants of the Marine Corps.
- But any book about the marines deserves five stars as long as it is not critiscising the corps. My dad just ordered the marines workout, revised edition, and the naval academy handbook and i cant wait for them to arrive in the mail. But on topic, my uncle has this book(Im not sure where he buys his books, but i think i saw it before july 1) and he didnt complain about it so i guess its pretty good. Of course being Supreme Commandant of the Marine Corps is what any boy hoping to go to the naval academy should strive for. Although since im only human, id just like to get into the naval academy first. Oh well, now im getting ahead of myself, since im only a freshmen in high school. But the earlier i start, the better my chances are of getting in, so who cares.
I cant wait to get this book, but im not gona but it. Im kinda low on cash so im Gonna check out the library first. Then well see about buying it.

5 comments about Michael Collins, Himself.
- Although the pages and the sophisticated writing style might intimidate one, if you stick to it and read the book to the end, you will NOT regret it. It was my first book in Irish History and I have learned so much from reading it. This book is amazing beyond words. If you buy it, you won't reget it.
- This is an extarodinary book about an extraordinary man. It is well wriiten, it is exciting and easy to read. It gives a wonderful insight into the life and times of Ireland during this remarkable time
- I recommend this book to anyone who wants an intense indepth study of Collins and Ireland of his time. This is easy to read and full of interesting information about the man and those around him. Collins was a genius who shaped the fate of modern Ireland and did so with an acute sense of how far he wcould go to achieve what he wanted.
It really makes me wonder how much better off Ireland would have been if he had not best lost so early in his life.
- An informative humanizing biography that provides a good picture of revolutionary Ireland. More photogrpahs would have made for 5 stars.
- Excellent book, very well written in the usual "Coogan" way, that is, skilfull, fluent and full of nice anecdotes. Gives an insightful portrait of one of Ireland's greatest men and my personal favourite. Eireann go brach!
