  1. i like reviews of people being helped, but i'd like more on the forensic type that helps people to put closer on their child or others.like helping the police in crime investigations. mahalo, elaine

  2. I tend to like her audioseminars better than her audiobooks read by someone other than Sylvia. It was hard to sit through this one. If you listen to anything by Sylvia, I'd recommend "Angels and Spirit Guides". It contains her best messages and her best sense of humor.

  3. if some one you love has recently died, this is a great book to read to get a little comfort. I also recomend this book to anyone who is beggining to read books on the spirit world.

  4. As with all of Sylvia's books...so far i have 13 and counting...it touches a certain place in my heart when ever i read any of her books. I think it's her way with words. This book certainly touched something in my heart with the affirmations sent in by people who have been read by her at one time or another. I was having a hard time trying not to cry during this. These people who are as real as any of us made me feel even more intuned to my beliefs than ever before because i have been in some of their situations myself and it helped to affirm my beliefs. Very touching. A must read even if your not into all the things Sylvia teaches and lectures about it makes you stop and think....gives you hope to say the least. I read some of the reviews before i bought it even though i already knew i had to have it but you know sometimes you think ...ok maybe this one won't be as good but let me tell you it was worth every penny. Just try it first by borrowing someone else's copy but i will tell you it is much cheaper to buy it here. I've already done the price checking.

  5. Sylvia Browne has done it again with another excellent book with details of the spirit word. Enjoyed reading this book so much I have read it more than once and have bought copies for my friends!

5 comments about The Fireman's Wife (Thorndike Nonfiction).
  1. A funny, insightfull, and often scary look into the life of a firefighters wife.

  2. This book was given to me by my firefighter fiancee soon after he proposed. What a Godsend! I consider this my "bible". Susan summed up the feelings we as wives have about our firemen husbands and does it in a funny, thoughtful and wonderful way. I recommend this be required literature for every fireman to hand out when they decide to propose!! LOL. Thanks Susan for sharing our side of the story!

  3. This is one of the best books that I have read! Susan really knows how to express what all fire wives feel. This book made me laugh, cry, and say "yep, I've seen (heard, felt, done) that!" so many times. I think anyone married to a fireman would love this book. I really appreciate the awareness it has given me. I only wish I read it sooner. As a 9-year fireman's wife myself, I highly recommend it!

  4. Loved this book. It was past around for the wives of the fire academy to read. With my brother on for a few years, I thought I knew a lot about what this journey would entail. But this book was insight, funny, heart wrenching. It was a easy, quick read. I will know give this to all the new wives entering this department. It really opens you eyes on what to expect, from the shift to your husband's second family. Worth your time.

  5. I am the wife of a Fire Captain and I could relate to so much that Susan writes about. Thank you Susan for telling such a wonderful story! I read this book over a 24 hour period, no easy task with a 7 week old baby and a 3 year old, and with my husband at the fire station. I could not put the book down and didn't want it to end, I laughed and cried and totally enjoyed every page. This is a must read for any wife, or family, of a fireman.

1 comments about Under the Dragon Flag: My Experiences in Chino-Japanese War (Large Print Edition).
  1. James Allan recounts his misadventures in Northeast Asia during the 1894-95. After gambling away his fortune in Monte Carlo Allan signs up as a sailor and sets out for the seas. He eventually finds himself aboard "Columbia" smuggling military cargos to China at the time of the latter's ill-fated conflict with the Japanese. Miraculously avoiding detention by the Japanese , the smugglers deliver their cargo but sign on to a perilous task of ferrying Chinese soldiers to a war theater. Eventually the ship ends up in Port Arthur, where Allan is left by accident. After a brief sojourn in Port Arthur he tries to catch up with "Columbia" aboard a Chinese ship, only to be detailed by a Japanese cruiser, where, on suspicion of being an instructor for the Chinese military, he is detained for more than a month. Finally, nearing Port Arthur, he makes a desperate escape for the shore only to find himself in a besieged city, which soon falls to the Japanese. Allan barely voids the fate of hundreds of massacred civilians in the ensuing bloodbath and flees the hostile shores aboard a Chinese junk. The narrative is full of marvelous detail, including that of the Japanese massacre in Port Arthur. Brilliantly written. Excellent for use as additional reading material in classes on Northeast Asian history, but a great read under any circumstances. Of course, project Gutengerg has long made available an electronic version of this book, but I can see why someone might want to own this excellent narrative in a traditional book form.

5 comments about Mother Angelica: The Remarkable Story of a Nun, Her Nerve, And a Network of Miracles.
  1. This book changed my life. I was a sadist and tortured puppies, but now I have seen the light. I am a changed man.

  2. This is a biography of Mother Angelica, born in 1923, by the author Raymond Arroyo. She is a cloistered nun, television host, and creator of the world's largest religious broadcasting organization, Eternal Word Television Network. He describes her impoverished Ohio upbringing; experiences guiding her faith, and the fiery entrepreneurial spirit that helped her overcome corporate and ecclesiastic challenges to success. Her story is truly inspiring and I highly recommend you read this book.

  3. While corporate America was just discovering the big-hairy-audacious-goal (BHAG) , a spunky little nun from Ohio was living it out. Mother Angelica has taken Jesus' instruction to be "as wise as serpents yet gentle as doves" to heart. Do not let the doughy grandmother face and infectious smile fool you into a false reliance on her being a simple gullible little nun. Beneath that soft exterior is God's iron lady. Many have underestimated her determination and her influence and made the mistake of raising her fiery indignation when she perceived an attack on her spiritual spouse. Truly, Mother's temper rises from time to time but also truly she seems to know how to use that reputation to further the cause of Christ. Miracle upon miracle documented in this book and elsewhere would seem to convey the favor of her Lord on all that she attempts in His name.

Mr. Arroyo does a nice job of remaining neutral in the church politics and ego battles that have surrounded the Eternal World Television Network (EWTN) story from the start. He chooses to focus on Mother Angelica's life, her philosophy, her faith, and her amazing accomplishments. At the same time, he gives us a peak into her troubled youth and how those emotional wounds might have played out to shape her incredible life. The story tugs the emotional spectrum, one page leaving you heartbroken and weeping, the next inspiring you to overcome every obstacle through faith. The message that comes through is that God works miracles despite, and sometimes even through, the weaknesses of poor health, bruised egos, and other human frailties. The message is the story of Mother Angelica's life and one of which she would approve. Her life is a reminder that saints are still imperfect human beings and that no refining fire is as intense as our loving Lord's. But, the resulting joy and peace far outweighs the heat of those flames.

  4. I wondered what Mother Angelica was like in her spiritual life. On television broadcasts, she always presents herself with common weaknesses and failings, yet communicates plausible remedies to overcome every obstacle. She's as true to form as one might imagine. Raymond Arroyo's writing style is captivating as he shares the life story of this amazing woman of faith. It's inspirational and humorous with so many twists and turns that I've found myself enjoying my second read as much as the first.

Raymond's ability to discover hidden qualities of Mother Angelica, is noteworthy; a masterful writing of a deeply spiritual woman.

  5. Thank you, Raymond Arroyo (and all those who helped him), for writing this wonderful biography of the much loved Mother Angelica and narrating the story with such sincerity. I laughed, I cheered, I cried ... Few books cause one to do that. Her story needed to be told to remind us all of the powerful love of God, His will to do miracles for our salvation, and the astonishing things that can happend when we step aside and let Him work through us, weak and miserable as we are.
