5 comments about Raising Fences: A Black Man's Love Story.
  1. This book is great and I hope that it will spur a new line of books in a similar vain by black men.

I can not put into words the feelings reading this book brought out in me. We as black women speak candidly about our emotions daily, but to see a black man, correction a strong black man do it brings such elation. My deepest respect to Michael Datcher for exposing the emotional side of a black man, and lets hope that there will be more powerful but tender works like this from Datcher in the future. I will be waiting.

  2. This book was amazing... I could not put it down... How have I went all this time without hearing about this book!?
Most books I love it is because in some way I can identify with the characters; not in this one... I loved it because it was raw, passionate and based on truth... truth of the relationships of our black men...excellent!

  3. RAISING FENCES by Michael Datcher is a gripping, realistic tale of a fatherless child's struggle into manhood. Mr. Datcher's writing style is remarkable. His use flashbacks and crisp and clear imagery allows readers to live vicariously through the author.

Readers will be drawn into this story as the author delves into intricate issues of African-American families such as broken homes, adoption, unprotected sex, surviving the streets, loveless relationships, having children out of wedlock and so much more. He does an excellent job of providing a male's prospective on these various issues.

The use of poetry incorporated in the book is an added bonus for poetry lovers, but may not be received well by readers who are not fans of poetry.

In this inspiring book, Mr. Datcher also shows readers that your past doesn't have to dictate your future.

Take a bow Mr. Datcher, for you have penned a masterpiece that not only is enjoyable to read, but educational and informative as well. This autobiography is highly recommended!!!

  4. If like me you are a woman and have always wanted to know about the thought process of a blk man then this is the book for you. M. Datcher does a great job of navigating us through his mind and life. Great read and an important read especially for the women out there playing that trifiling baby daddy game.

  5. Raising Fences, a memoir, brings you on a tour through the life of an enduring Black man, while staying clear of the pimp-esque bravado. Datcher, born to a single mother who births him after being raped, but is given up for adoption, develops an obsession of being a great husband and father early in his life. Taken through his struggles with self-identity, female relationships, financial hardships, Datcher hides nothing, and tells all. If you are looking for a book that will do away with the Black man "playa" myth, this one is for you. A great poetic read from cover to cover.

1 comments about Three Cheers for the Next Man to Die (Reminiscence).
  1. The Law Of Land Warfare is quite clear, in that ANY person fighting in uniform, who surrenders, is to be afforded Prisoner Of War Status under the Geneva Convention.
On page 157 he relates how four captured Germans "in uniform" were ordered by the Battalion Commander..."to be stood against the playground wall and shot".
On page 158 he relates..."The oldest could not have been more than sixteen, and the youngest probably only fourteen."
The author/witness does not relate that anyone.....
ANYONE!... even raised a peep of protest, objection, or argument to these murders of children who legally should have been afforded Prisoners Of War Status under the Geneva Convention.
    No legal justification is provided.
In 1983, when this book was published, and this veteran "told all",
had it been Germans executing adult Partisans fighting out of uniform,
all hell would have broken lose,
with crininal investigations of any and all surviving members of the self-admitted War Criminal Glider Battallion, (British) Sixth Airborne Division.
But this was not even that...
    These ...were...C H I L D R E N !.....WHO... WERE... IN ...UNIFORM !
Ahh, the "Good Guys"...what unabashed hypocrites!

  1. The love between Edie and Paul is one that we all should experience in our lifetime. I cried tonight as I finished the book, feeling the love and pain Edie and Paul shared and as death approached, I am certain Paul felt his life was complete, as he experienced true love, unconditionally. There are few books in my life that have such a profound effect on my being.

  2. Not knowing the subject matter, I happened to buy this book while recovering from a bone marrow transplant. What should have been depressing instead was a gift of wonder and beauty at a time I needed it most. I can't find words to express how this book moved me. Edie Clark writes with an almost exacting clarity combined with extraordinary love and tenderness. Consider it a privilege to be allowed to share in the incredible story of Paul and Edie.

  3. I have never before felt the urge to write to an author to tell her how much I enjoyed her beautifully written book. I was touched very much by this story and highly recommend it.

  4. I had no idea what this story would be about when I picked it up, but once I started reading I knew I wasn't going to be able to put it down. I read it in a day, and couldn't believe how profound this story was. By the time I was finished, I wanted to hold my husband and not let him go. In a world where we all tend to focus on big homes, big cars, big jobs, big money, etc., the simple thread that wove through this wonderful story was the simple love that Edie found with Paul. Paul may have been a simple man, but I wonder how many of us in our lifetimes ever feel the true love and tenderness that they shared. This is a story that I will always remember. I truly hope I precede Edie to heaven so I can witness their reunion.

  5. Even though this book is out of print, you should own a copy, it is so emotional and heartwarming, after I read this book about Edie and her husband and the experiences she went through with him, I had to write her a email and tell her about how well I enjoyed this book, she wrote me back with a response and said she was working on a new book, this was a year or so ago and I am still waiting. I can't wait. I hope her new book is as great as this one.

5 comments about I'm Not Slowing Down: Winning My Battle With Osteoporosis.
  1. I just finished this terrific book. I watched my grandmother, and now my mother suffer from osteoporosis. I never totally understood this issue and the fact that it is preventable. I always believed there was nothing that could be done. Now I know the truth. This book explains EVERYTHING! I am calling my
doctor today to schedule an appointment to discuss the various options. I am 47 and just entering menopause. Please, please, everyone reading this review, buy a copy for every woman you know, regardless of their age. Thanks Ann.

  2. I could not put this book down. One would expect a book on Osteoporosis to be a bit dry but Ann keeps it real! You go girl.

  3. While I found this book to be useful and Ms. Richards' style to be non-technical and engaging, I wish that, before I bought the book, I had seen the statement which is on the reverse of the title page: "Ann Richards is a spokesperson for Eli Lilly, which owns the patent for Evista. Dr. Richard U. Levine, M.D. has been a member of the speakers' bureau for Eli Lilly."

  4. This is an excellent, very current overview of this all too common disease and its treatment. Let's face it--we're all responsible for our own health, few of us use the same physician for our whole adult lives, and education is a must. Most of us are generally aware of this disease, but did you know: that hip fractures are really breaks in the femur neck, the top of the thigh bone? that there are several drugs out there to treat this, not just fosamax? that osteoporosis can result from lack of calcium or exercise during childhood? This book explains what those T-scores from your bone density test really mean. Lots of info here too on exercise and diet. A bit less interesting is the personal discussion from Ann Richards on her own life, but that doesn't mar this extremely useful work.

  5. Not only is the information in the book completely out of date since the hormones (Provera) have been shown to be dangerous and not to help bones or heart, but to my deep disappointment, Ann Richards, it is disclosed, was a spokesperson for the pharmaceutical company who manufactured the hormones!
