4 comments about Anne Frank in the World.
  1. This resource for fans of Frank's Diary is a photo essay of over 225 black and white photos, many never before published, compiled by the Anne Frank House for a travelling exhibition. Images in the book are dedicated to preserving the history of not only Frank but the Holocaust and how its issues affect contemporary life: images thus are gleaned from the extent of the war and its aftermath and detail not just Frank's life but the experiences of all sides.

  2. Anne Frank in the World is an amazing book that tells you tons of information about Anne frank and her difficult life she faced. She was born on June 12, 1929 in a town called franfurts in Gremany. Sh had a sisiter, mom, and dad. She was living at the time where Hilter was ruling and taking over Gremany. The main charactors where Anne Frnak, Hilter , her mom, and her dad. Anne Frank lived in Gremany and her and her family where jewish so her and her family had to wear the "star of david" where ever they went. It was an exellent book that tells about her life.

  3. Brittany Williams

The book I did my biography on is about Anne Frank. It was very interesting learning a few things about her that i didn't know.
Anne Frank was born on June 12,1929 in Frankfurt, Germany. She was the youngest out of all her brothers abnd sisters. Annes full name is Annelies Marie. Annes dad Otto Franj would always take pitures of her and Margot and friends out in the street playing, when thye were little. On Anne's 13th birthday ahe recieved a Dairy and she named it "kitty" ahe like her dairy the most out of all her presents she got from her family and friends. Right around her 13th birthday the Nazis were taking over Amsterdam anad making the Anti-Jewish rules and Anne Frank was Jewish. Anne went to Montessori school. Then because Anti-jewish laws, she moved into a Jewish Lyceum where she auickly started to adjust.
After 2 years of hiding the Frank family was found and put into a Concentration Camp. Anne Frank died in Bergen Belsen at the Concentration Camp os typhus and so did her sister Margot. Her mother died of starvation and her father was the only one who survived. Anne Frank died at the age 15. She left behind a dariy that she wrote during the Holocaust which has be translated into 55 different languages and more than 15 million copies have been sold around the world.

  4. More a photographic history of the times than a book about Anne Frank herself, only a small fraction of the 233 photos in this book are photos of Anne and her fellow residents of the Secret Annex. Instead, there are a number of photos from Germany of the 1920's through the end of the second world war. There is also a considerable amount of text, again concentrating mostly on the history of the period instead of Anne's history. If you are not already familiar with Anne's story, you won't learn much of it here.

And therein lies the crux of the problem for me: though there is some interesting text and fascinating photos in this book, if you don't already know Anne's story and the story of the period, it is difficult to learn much from this. Different facets of Nazism and the Frank story are told in a couple paragraphs per page when some of these topics covered in a page have had entire volumes of history written about them. I fear that a young reader would have difficulty understanding things and could be misled if this book is the only source of information.

On the other hand, for someone already familiar with the period, this book can make a very good supplement. I just would not let this book be the first one about the Franks I put in my child's hands.

1 comments about Rescued Images : Memories of a Childhood in Hiding.
  1. People of my generation or younger, born after the mid nineteen-sixties, are caught in a strange place when it comes to learning about, and relating to, the events in World War II Europe. We come too late for direct experience, yet before the greater distance of the generation following us. In a sense, we will, if we are thinking people, shoulder the task of passing on the facts, impressions, and enormous lessons from this period, but without first-hand knowledge. "Rescued Images" is a remarkable book which should do much to provide us with a tool which is both entertaining (as extraordinary as that may seem) and profoundly moving. Jacobsens gentle, yet strong voice, is made even stronger by her montages, which are simultaneously beautiful as they are emotionally raw. When she is old enough I will sit with my daughter and we will read this book together, in honor of the triumph of the human spirit, and in memory of the worst of human failings. Parents and schools should add this volume to their shelves, it will remain timeless.

2 comments about A Hidden Childhood: 1942-1945/A Jewish Girl's Sanctuary in a French Convent.
  1. I think that the book "A Hidden Childhood" is a book for older readers who find the "other" stories about WWII interesting. I really didn't like this book. It just didn't keep me interested. The beginning of the book really didn't encourage me to read on. I also didn't like how she put everyone down. I didn't like how "F" is so bossy to her mother. I do believe this a very well written book, but it isn't one I would pick up and read for pleasure.

  2. Moving story, well written and worth reading.

3 comments about Bible Places Then & Now (Then & Now Series).
  1. I bought this book for our church library and found it excellent! It is well-laid out in chapters on each archeological site of religious significance to the life of Christ, with an acetate "Then and Now" view of each site. My students really liked these acetate overlays and put them back and forth over the photos of modern day ruins. Each chapter tells of the Biblical significance and also the archeological significance of each place. Between the chapters lie double-page spreads of Bible stories and how they relate to the sites. This is an excellent book for Christians, amateur travelers, archeologists, architects, even for preteens and teens who play with Legos and can't stop drawing kid-style elevations of buildings.

  2. This would be a great book to carry with you as you tour Israel. The artistic recreations of what the ruins used to look like are so helpful. I went to Israel once before, and even though the tour guides do their best to describe what the ruins looked like, a picture *is* worth a thousand words. This book covers major cities/ sites mentioned in the Bible, not just Roman or Crusader times which are often the emphasis in museums over there. Summaries of Biblical stories accompany the pictures. My only reason for not rating it a "five star" is that I wish it covered even more archaelogical sites. There are 14 overlapping illustrations superimposed over the photos of the ruins.

  3. The overlays are great. Some of the pictures do not show sites as they were in Biblical times but show them a few hundred years after the Bible was finished.

I would like to see another book like this with more cities in the time period of the Bible. I was looking for something on Crete.
