1 comments about Agony of Choice: Matsuoka Yosuke and the Rise and Fall of the Japanese Empire, 1880-1946 (Studies of Modern Japan).
- This is a superb biography, much more than simply a translation of the author's earlier Japanese-language book on Matsuoka. Lu has drawn on much pirmary source material not exploited by others, including interviews with many people who knew or worked with (or against) Matsuoka. Because he is very aware of the broader context, he has been able to accurately assess Matsuoka's real impact. This makes the book essential for any study of the events of the period, and particularly so of Japan's road to the Pacific War. In addition, Lu draws a deeply insightful psychological portrait of this very complex man.

- This book has been re-printed.
New ISBN is 1903464706
- This short autobiographical account of an Irish doctor's World War II experiences is so riveting that I stayed up way too late to finish it. Dr. MacCarthy served in Europe and was then shipped out to the Asian theatre where he endured the unthinkable. The most striking things I took away from this book is how strong human beings can be in the face of terrible events and how good can triumph within each of us. As the preface said, if you went to a movie and saw all the things portrayed which Dr. McCarthy lived through, you'd think it too far-fetched to be true.

2 comments about Parade of the Dead: A U.S. Army Physician's Memoir of Imprisonment by the Japanese, 1942-1945.
- Just finished the book, and it's pretty hard to put into words what I feel. If I were Japanese, I would be ashamed, humiliated, and very concerned that my culture could/?can reach the depths of depravity that Dr. Bumgarner so matter-of-factly describes. The treatment of their POWs is almost beyond belief, as is the fact that any of the prisoners survived at all. The book is well-written and engrossing, with a physician's eye for detail. No exaggeration nor hyperbole creeps in -- none are needed -- the story speaks for itself. You'll read the book and wonder "Could I have lived through this?" I'm sure it was not pleasant for the author to dredge up these remarkably clear memories and write about them, but we owe him a debt of gratitude for doing so.
- An interesting book although a little short on pages. He tends to repeat himself rather a lot and there is little character building of people he talks of. One was not left with the real feel of camp life.
