1 comments about Women and Monarchy in Macedonia (Oklahoma Series in Classical Culture).
- If you liked Heckel's book "Marshals of Alexander", you will like this one too. Beth Carney writes good, short biographies of the important women that were around in Alexander's time. I might disagree on deatils with her view e.g. on Roxane, but this is a thorough, serious and especially very readable scholarly study. I have waited two years since its publication before I bought it. I wished I had not.

1 comments about A Soldier of the Queen.
- I bought this book while in Ireland and have since bought all O'Mahoney's others. This book is excellent because it is brutally honest in all aspects, which at times, makes it difficult to read, yet at the same time, impossible to turn away from. While much of the author's behavior is reprehensable, he does not try to make excuses for it. He really leaves the book open ended as if to say 'this kind of thing happens all the time.'
What makes this book so interesting is that is is the story of a street thug who becomes a soldier at the time of the 'Troubles' in Northern Ireland. This book is highly recommended to anyone with interest in true crime or 20th century Irish history. Its graphic honesty makes it almost impossible to put down.

1 comments about Prisoners: The Civil War Letters of Ernie O'Malley.
- This book is a collection of letters written by O'Malley after he had been shot (17 times) and lay convalescing and inprisoned in Kilmainham Gaol, during the Irish Civil War. Devoutly Anti-Treaty, O'Malley was perhaps the most articulate and thought-provoking writer the Wars produced. Although "The Singing Flame" and "On Another Man's Wounds" are better, this collection augments the information O'Malley has already left us and through letter writing, reveals more about O'Malley. Definitely worth getting.
