5 comments about Commanding Boston's Irish Ninth: The Civil War Letters of Colonel Patrick R. Guiney Ninth Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. (The Irish in the Civil War, 6).
  1. I don't normally read historical books, especialy ones about little known Civil War generals, but this one came highly recommended by a friend so I gave it a shot. I was won over immediately! As it turned out, the life of Patrick Guiney was remarkable and compelling. His letters to his wife were eloquent and heartwarming, and his courage in the face of what must have been a very painful injury was inspiring. Samito's editing was never intrusive, and elucidated the more ambiguous aspects of the text. I found his explication of the Boston cultural and political scene of the time to be particularly insightful. Overall, a surprisingly good read! Nick Cavuoto

  2. This compelling book truly transported me to the nineteenth century. Mr. Samito eloquently presented the words of this little known figure in a truly remarkable fashion. The history community is truly in debt to Mr. Samito for uncovering these long lost treasures of the nations past. Any history "Buff" worth their salt needs to read this book. I only hope Mr. Samito continues to produce works of this quality for some time to come. Ken Cooper

  3. Mr. Samito's work is a careful examination of a tumultuous period in American history, and a compelling human drama. Would make a great movie- better than Braveheart or The Patriot!!

  5. This is an excellent book. My great-grandfather was a bootmaker in company K of the 9th Mass and I've collected every document I can find on the 9th's existance. The insights this book offers are priceless. Samito has done a wonderful job.

1 comments about Excursions in the Real World: Memoirs.
  1. Admirers of Trevor's masterly fiction will enjoy these incisive, witty, heartbreaking essays revisiting his youth and early adulthood. The short piece about his parents is probably the most moving thing he's ever written. Most writers use autobiography to settle scores; Trevor uses it to give shape to the life of memory--a shape, in its own way, just as artful and just as true as the shape he gives to the life of his fiction.

2 comments about Wellington's War: His Peninsular Dispatches.
  1. The author is completely in love with Wellington. He refers to Napoleon as "the much overrated General Buonaparte." He doesn't have the courtesy to call him by his prefered name. He describes Wellington's dispatches as a joy to read, whereas they are actually very dull. As far as I can tell, he has his facts right, he just presents them in a very one sided and boring way. Overall, if you need something to start a fire with, this is the book for you.

  2. Normally I would give this a 3/4 star review, but as the book isn't likely to be reviewed frequently, I'll give it a 5 to balance the other review.
Rathbone has taken Wellington's written commentary on the Peninsular War from letters, dispatches, etc, and woven them into a history of the expulsion of the French from the Iberian Penisula by the British, Portugese, and Spanish. Rathbone is indeed enamored of his subject, but rightly so (I'm sure there is plenty of counterbalancing material out there). The story is told in a clear, illuminating fashion, and is exciting until the end.
I found Wellington as depicted here fascinating in his own words: brilliant, farthinking, strategic, daring, bold. It took a genius to beat the genius of Napoleon.
This may not be the best material for serious students of this time, but as a contextual supplement to the Cornwell Sharpe series, it is perfec

2 comments about Are You Somebody: The Life and Times of Nuala O'Faolain.
  1. This is an interesting memoir. In part it's the story of how a wonderfully bright woman finds herself. It's also an overview of how Ireland came to grips with the modern world through such artists and writers as Ms. O'Faolin and others like her. There are some portions that seem unfulfilled. For instance, her home life was horrible, but she wasn't there for the brunt of it. Her peregrinations through alcohol and ill fated romances are painful, yet she keeps them distant. Nuala O'Faolin is an honest woman who lets us know clearly where she stands as an Irish woman, but the journey isn't so well lit. However, clear writing and commitment to truth make it worth reading.

  2. I thoroughly enjoyed Nuola O'Faolain's memoir. My family is Irish. Many of her recollections regarding her family, her childhood, and her Catholic boarding school are similar to those of my mother's. Anyone who loves modern Irish literature and culture should read this book. She is brutally honest about her life. This book is not a sweet Irish memoir, nor is it Angela's Ashes.
