1 comments about Ramon Novarro: The Life and Films of the First Latino Hollywood Superstar.
- The angle of sometimes neglected history, i.e Latino or minority history vs Anglo or majority history could have made this book very interesting. Also, Ramon Novarro, a mega-star of the silent and early talkies has only had one other biography written about him by A. Ellenberger. However, this book is a great disappointment. First of all, you have to wonder how much a biographer knows of his subject when he gets the date of his subject's death wrong (Oct 31 1968, NOT Nov 1 as stated in this book)
Secondly, the biographer states he is not going to talk about rumors, i.e. Ramon Novarro by repute was gay, and then goes on to try to suggest Ramon Novarro as having had affairs with some of his female stars. Almost as bad as the old movie studio publicity when, MGM tried in 1934 to publicise a 'romance' between Myrna Loy one of his co-stars. Apparently, this author had never read her reaction at the time as recorded in her autobiography in the 1980's, which states 'it was ridiculous, Ramon didn't even like the girls'. It's nice to see another book on Ramon Novarro, a really great movie star, but this one is just plain disappointing.

2 comments about A Kineno Remembers: From the King Ranch to the White House.
- Dr. Cavazos' story was most inspiring and also entertaining. As he wrote of his days growing up on the King Ranch I could almost feel the dusty wind blowing in my face. His story just shows what anyone can achieve in this country. Having a great pair of parents and other role models just makes it easier. This country got where it is with the help of all the immigrants into our country and this book demonstrates a part of that.
- Dr. Cavazos gives us a vivid explanation of the reasons that politics gets in the way of educational reform. A man of integrity, he refused to bend to the demands of party politics. His emphasis on parental involvement, early preparation for schoolwork, and yes -- bilingual education -- have outlined a course of action we should all adopt. Cavazos is bilingual from his earliest years. While he notes the importance of the Spanish language for its cultural roots, he emphases that English is the language of our country.
I give this book my highest recommendation.

4 comments about Celia SPA: Mi Vida.
- This book was truly written by Celia Cruz. You can almost see her speaking to you as you read her words. If you are lucky enough to be bilingual get the Spanish version. You'll love it!!! Celia's kindness and honesty is refreshing and inspiring. I had admired Celia Cruz for a long time, this book made me realize why I had found her so likable. Celia was a great human being and a great inspiration to us all, not just as a great entertainer but a wonderful person. I will always treasure this book.
- This is my second review of this book which I re-read (I don't know why Amazon lost the first review). The book is a good read and very well descriptive of La Reina de Guanguanco ("Queen of Guanguanco"). Celia spoke of many points in her life which we all can relate to. She also spoke highly about her wishes to return to her homeland. I'm glad we have her in the USA! She is worthy of her success as a human being and a fine negra-latina. Bravo!
- I received this book in very good conditions.
And its very interesting read the live of Celia Cruz.

1 comments about Eyewitness: A Filmmaker's Memoir of the Chicano Movement (Hispanic Civil Rights).
- Names and stories about so called "Role Models" fall short in front of this personal memoirs of Jesus Salvador Trevino.
This book is a great collection of personal experiences and success in a society where not being "white" means to swim against the current. I highly recommend it for teachers to share with their students. Each page carries a message that says: Yes, it can be done!
