1 comments about Out of the Sea and Into the Fire: Latin American-U.S. Immigration in the Global Age.
- ms. lydersen looks into the real effects of "globalization." and the real people being affected most directly by it. she lets what she finds speak for itself.
she also lists web sites at the end of each chapter so the reader can continue exploring some off the issues she brings forth. definitely one of the most useful, "enjoyable," and well-written books i have come across in quite a while!
kari lydersen is helping set the stage for global understanding and true justice. this book is an important piece of history.

1 comments about Mexican American Odyssey: Felix Tijerina, Entrepreneur & Civic Leader, 1905-1965 (University of Houston Series in Mexican American Studies, 2).
- This is the definitive biography of an astonishing Mexican-American. 4 time LULAC president Felix Tijerina was born in Mexico, and came to Houston speaking no English. After he built a Tex-Mex restaurant empire, he turned his attention to the plight of his fellow Mexican-Americans. Spanish-speaking kids failed out of school in huge numbers at the time. Tijerina thought if they had a few words of English, they might do better. So he spent his own money to hire tutors to teach kids 400 words of English before they entered kindergarten. LBJ adopted his "little schools of 400" and made them the model for the Headstart Program--one of the most successful Federal programs in history.
Kreneck's dedication to an accurate telling of Mexican-American history has been an inspiration to me.

5 comments about La historia de Ana: Un camino lleno de esperanza (Ana's Story, Spanish edition).
- Buying this book on a whim after seeing it featured on the Today Show was a mistake. I was expecting a deep, well-written novel, but that is not what you find in this book. A waste of money to say the least. The book is written completely in "subject-verb" sentence format, which makes it read like a child wrote it. The story itself is completely linear, which I guess is expected, seeing as it is based on a true story. I guess the title should have given it away, it is so unoriginal and expected. Usually you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, but in this case, you should. I will never recommend this book, not even to the fourth graders who read at the level at which it is written.
- It was a very interesting book. The book was very well written. The story was very interesting, hard to put down.
- Ana's Story, by Jenna Bush, is inspiring and uplifting. Ana's struggles and journey through life helped me realize that my life isn't so bad. I hope others can be blessed by the message Ana has sent through Jenna Bush.
- this is a supposdly true story of a girl named ana who goes through many hardships from having hiv, to losing her parents, to being abused in many forms. this would be a truly touching story if didn't come across sounding overly sweet, plus the pictures/illustrations don't match up with the story. what i found was worst is how gives a false hidden message where all you truly need is love to survive. i got this book from the library and glad i didn't waste a dime other then my time in reading this book.
- Jena Bush has written a remarkable story. I love how it is written and I understand why the story is incomplete. In the future I hope to hear that Ana is still doing well and continues to grow. Much was said about HIV/AIDS and much education is being done with this book. I hope that it continues to educate people about this disease. Thank you.

5 comments about The Boy and the Dog Are Sleeping (Ballantine Reader's Circle).
- As an actual, real Navajo tribal member and as a writer I'm pretty disgusted by this. A hoax it is and pretty pathetic. I'm always surprised at how little most Americans know about my people. It's pretty disheartening. Definitely read the LA Weekly article http://www.laweekly.com/index.php?option=com_lawcontent&task=view&id=12468&Itemid=47 for more on the Navahoax. If you want real Navajo writing read Lucy Tapahanso or for great writing read Leslie Marmon Silko (a Pueblo writer).
- I read this book a few years ago as a publishers advance and it completely broke my heart. It ranks as one of my top 5 favorites. I really don't care if it's fiction or if Nasdijj identifies with the Navajo nation.
What matters most, the quality of the writing or the veracity of it?
For me a book doesn't have to be true to resonate.
I also feel that the problem people are having with it is that he started out writing gay leather stuff and then tried his hand at writing about the love he supposedly had for a child.
- While it appears that memoirs that have been fabricated are now coming out of the woodwork, the knee jerk reaction that people have towards Million Little Pieces isn't really fair to apply to this book.
First of all, when I was working in a bookstore when this book came out, there wasn't nearly the fanfare that there was for Million Little Pieces, even before Oprah started pushing it. A lot more people are now willing to reject this book before even taking a look inside, and that's a shame.
Secondly, the book reads more like a novel than MLP did. I really wasn't expecting the complete truth the further I got in. While I was a little disappointed upon finding out the actual author, and while I'm sure that any actual Navajo would have every right to be pissed off, it didn't affect the telling of the story to me. It doesn't need to have happened to be worth reading.
Last of all, Boy and the Dog is a better book. MLP was written by a self-aggrandizing blowhard, and it shows in the writing. While Nasdijj (I don't remember his real name) may have been just as self serving in the long run, his books aren't nearly as juvenile.
- Nasdijj is NOT NAVAJO (Dine). He is a White guy from Michigan. He lied about being "Dine". His real name is Tim Barrus. As a member of the Dine Nation I am Truly disgusted with this fraud.
- This was one of my favorite books until I found out that the author made it up, and passed it off as memoir.

- There are lots of people in this world. But only these ten made it in this book! Its Great for people who dont know much about people!Such as Roberto Clemente and Jaime Escalante!Roberto was a baseball player and Jaime was a Teacher!
This is one of those books you MUST read. Don't let a traditional education turn you into a comsumer zombie. Learn about YOUR history and herstory! The PEOPLE'S HISTORY. NOT THE CORPORATION'S HISTORY! NOT THE RICH WHITE MAN'S HISTORY! There are more important people out there than ever were revealed to you in public or catholic schools, Hector.
