3 comments about Biography - Charles Manson.
  1. THIS IS ONE OF THE BETTER BIOS FROM A&E,IN THAT IT PROBES DEEP INTO THE BACKGROUND OF SOMEONE SO MYSTERIOUS AS CHARLES MANSON.THE VIDEO RELIES HEAVILY ON INTERVIEWS WITH FAMILY MEMBERS,INCLUDING LYNETTE FROMME, LESLIE VAN HOUTEN AND PATRICIA KRENWINKEL.TATE MURDER CASE PROSECUTER VINCENT BUGLIOSI IS ALSO FEATURED.THE FILMMAKERS ASSUME YOU KNOW LITTLE ABOUT MANSON,BUT BY THE END YOU FEEL YOUVE LEARNED QUITE A BIT IN THE 50 MINUTES IT TOOK TO WATCH IT.

  2. The A&E show Biography used to be a class act. Then it discovered that the tabloid approach that worked for lesser programs could help boost its own ratings. So we get dung like "True Crime Week," "Serial Killers Week," etc. Have you ever dreamed of people buying a one-hour video biography all about you? Well, you must be too good a person, because Manson has earned it instead.

Notice we never hear the word "infamous" anymore. In this age of anything-for-fame, nothing is bad as long as it makes you a household word. If you paid money for this video, you might as well have been back there at the Spahn ranch yourself, vowing to do anything for your master.

  3. Charles Manson speaks of his life and crimes; cocky, sneering, and unrepentent to the end. Profiled is his troubled childhood, his early prison days, his "Haight Ashbury" period, and the murders. Also included are recollections from a childhood neighbor and parole officer, as well as matronly-looking Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme, Leslie Van Houten, and Pat Krenwinkel. Highlights include Manson's confrontations with the parole board; even he realizes that that's a lost cause. A good show with a lot of insight into Charlie's madness.

  1. Modern Day American Greek tragety about
World War II vet, who got involved in
    silly tax protest movement, probably
started by Feds, but does much to show
how Masons control most of our courts.
Son still rots in jail for crime he
didn't commit! [Also: read Yorie Von
Kahl's "A Writ of Habeas Corpus" for
more on Gov't tyranny. Don't tell me
there isn't any!] The Kahl case begat
the Ruby Creek fiasco with Vietnam vet
Randy Weaver having several family mem-
bers murdered, that begat Waco, which
begat Oklahoma City, which begat 9/11!
    All had 'agent provacatuers' running
amuck for 'The New World Order' high
cabal boys (see also Col. L. Fletcher
Prouty's writings and others.) Not a
movie for the whole family unless they
are mature and have done conspiracy
homework. Wife Joan Kahl and Gordon both
have/had some (kooky) beliefs, but most
of their beliefs were/are true, unfor-
    tunately!

4 comments about Degas and the Dancer.
  1. Kathryn Long, the teenage actress who is fast becoming "Canada's Jodie Foster", again plays a "heavy" in this film, the nasty older sister of the young dancer of the title. Long's range of talent is considerable, from teenage vampiress Divia in FOREVER KNIGHT to the harried young heroine Carly Beth in two HAUNTED MASK movies, and now, this historical drama allows her to shine in a non-supernatural role. Rent it or buy it especially for this talented, beautiful actress!

  2. This story is beautifully produced by the Canadian film company, Devine Entertainment, known for their commitment to excellent entertainment for older children. This biography shows Degas as a self-centered old man whose art is more important to him than people. A young ballerina, Marie, has a major influence on changing his attitudes and behavior. It begs the question, "Does being a genius give you license to treat others badly?" Our child viewers commented: "I learned about what it takes to be an artist." "I liked the way they all taught each other something. The painter taught her that if you don't make a mistake you'll never learn. She taught him not to be so grouchy and have respect for others." Most 8 to 12-year-olds will enjoy this, particularly girls, and girls interested in dance will dance with joy!

  3. I saw this on a long flight and was so impressed with it that I got it for my daughter to see. It's a great balance of history, important life lessons and entertainment. Four stars doesn't mean it wasn't good - I just think reviews are more useful if they aren't all 1's and 5's. A great film to watch with your kids.

  4. It was because of this show in the Artists' Special series I became interested in Edgar Degas and his artwork. And because of it Degas is my favorite artist.

This show portrays Degas as how I might imagine him to have actually been. The stubbornness of Degas and Marie keeps them from agreeing at times but in the end they form a friendship and a magnificent stature is also born.

  1. A truly inspirational life sensitivly treated by the filmmaker. I have watched it several times and I never cease to be amazed at the life of Ann Saint John Hawley.

  2. I purchased this video and was so inspired by the charming older lady with such zest for life that I immediately ordered 5 for friends. It's that kind of video! The woman is very interesting, her art is amazing, she plays drums, she dances this strange kind of Japanese dance and draws and paints about it. My gosh, and what's more, she lives in Taos, New Mexico....I could see and 'feel' that incredible light in many scenes. My artist-self awakened with new energy and confidence. I am inspired to be true to making art, no matter what! Thanks Butterfly Woman!

  3. A Beautiful film about being who you are, and letting your creativity joy and soul come alive.....and seeing all our infinite possibilities.

  4. Your would like to dance, or write or paint, but are too busy with job and family..How about an hour here, an hour there...And someday your time will be for you alone...

This is a true story of a woman whose own identity had been put on hold while she raised a family...Late in life she became reborn and burst into a whole new world of art and creativity.

This film will inspire women and men alike, and anyone who says "I'm too old...I'm not talented...I don't have the time."

  5. A wonderful friend sent this video to me as gift. After watching this breathtaking video, my whole life has change!! If you ever thought your dreams could never come true, no matter what your age, this is a film for you. This beautiful spirited women will show you, it can be done. Michelle Vandepas has captured Ann Saint John Hawley sprit and joy of life!! A Beautiful film about being who you are, and letting your creativity, joy and soul come alive.....and seeing our infinite possibilities.

  1. I have a friend in Modesto that has had this video for a few years and we have all loved watching it over and over. It is wonderfully documented, like a national geographic special, with original music and real ranch cowboys and their wives and children. Excellent for family viewing, school reports, show and tell. Great gift for a child who loves to watch other children riding horses and roping and branding in real life, humbly and auuthentically, helping their parents. Also, great talk-overs, interviews by the real cowboys and their families.

  2. I have known the Steiger brothers for almost 15 years. My mother and father had lived on the Yolo ranch when they where filming this video. They hit the true meaning of family and comradery among friends and co workers.I lost my father 7 years ago and pull this video out from time to time and view it for the memories. I deeply suggest this video for all childern who think thier lives are hard.

  3. This documentary is reminiscent of the American spirit. These folks existed when punching cows involved skill, talent, and know how. These folks not only got their full load cycle complete through any weather, they protected their livestock. Nowadays, city slickers have encroached on ranch lands thereby causing ranches to either sell out or become more 'commercialized'. Here in a traditional cowpuncher town in Central AZ, we are witnessing the transition of ranch land to rural to suburban to urban. With every big box store and with every ranch being sold, cowpunchers are seemingly disappearing. But, every now and again, I meet someone having a whiskey that is wearing a hat with character, boots that have seen a few miles, and a face that can stare down an eagle. These are my role models and Ranch Album is the very essence of Cowboy.
