1 comments about Lilian Gish : The Actor's Life For Me.
- The Actor's Life For Me is a short documentary about Lillian Gish and her career. Since her career spanned from the early 1900s until the 1980s when she made her last film, she is certainly a great candidate to have a film made about her. The wonderful thing about this particular one is that she is the one who tells the story. Not only does this make it more personal, but it also makes it more interesting. One can tell that Gish was sharp as a tack in her old age and could speak about her career for hours if she wanted to.
This film features many film clips not only from very old silent films (wonderfully scored by Carl Davis) but of rare footage of Griffth directing, his funeral, and Gish accepting an award in the 80s.
The only problem with this documentary is that it is short and grazes over specific films. It is mostly about the late teens and early twenties; Gish's sound career and stage career after films is only mentioned in passing. However, the fact that Miss Gish tells the story herself is reason enough to buy this documentary.

- What I like about this video is its authentic voice. Even if the viewer is not a student of art nor a connoisseur they will find the people in this video have something important to give them. In essence, we are all artists when viewed through Laurie McDonald's camera. Check it out. These Houston, Texas folk artists inspired me, made me laugh and most of all made me want to see their work. This is art that lives and is created every day. Outstanding!

1 comments about Thomas Eakins: Scenes From Modern Life.
- I knew of Thomas Eakins' significance as a American artist of the late 19th Century, but that was all I knew. This incredibly sharp and clear (in more ways than visually) documentary gave me a lesson on this bold artist's philosophy that opened my eyes. With the story being told by Blythe Danner in the background, one is drawn into the struggles of Eakins to reach above and beyond in his art.
Because this was done with High Definition TV equipment, it seems all that more detailed on a standard TV in VHS. This production exceeded my expectations of what today is mostly background with a few snippets of the artist's work. The pans and zooms of the work is just what is needed to elaborate the fine detail of Eakin's pieces. There is a fine segment showing how Eakins put together one of his works with his use of photographs. This new technology is state of the art in his time and the documentary shows off Eakins' brilliance and grasp of Photography and its promise. I highly reccommend this program.
