4 comments about Joe Paterno: The Coach from Byzantium.
  1. JoePa's little brother gives you the inside story of one ,if not the best, college football coaches in America. Tells of there early years in NY, the family ties, and who or what influenced them both. It's a good book that gives you a look into the human side of Joe and the way it affected his family and in paticular his little brother George.

  2. I can not begin to describe my disappointment in this book. I am a huge Penn State fan because of Joe Paterno and his adherence to goals, discipline and education. I wanted to read about the man, his ideals as a child, as a father, a friend and a brother. What I got was a brother who used his brother's name to complain about his life and the unfortunate treatment he felt he received from his parents. I could care less about George Paterno. In addition, everyone has problems growing up. Most of us get on with life and make our own things happen. I still respect and admire JoePa. I can't wait for him to have a book written by someone who is mentally stable.

  3. I really liked this book about Paterno. It was a very honest account of the REAL Joe Paterno from the one person who really knows him the best.At first,I thought this might be about a little brother using his big brother's name to make some money by writing a book, but this was not the case at all. George Paterno really does look up to his famous brother, and he is just telling it like it is in the book. I liked this publication, any football fan would as well. If you want to hear the whole truth about Joe Paterno, then this is the book for you!!!

  4. I decided to read George Paterno's book on his famous brother as I pack my bags for the Orange Bowl where two of college football's feared septugenarians are facing off.

Joe Paterno will bring his Lions into the Florida State den of Bobby Bowden. Younger fans have forgotten that while Bowden has surpassed Paterno for #1 in career wins, Paterno mercilessly beat up on Bowden in the 1960's and 1970's when Bowden coached the overmatched West Virginians.

Back to the book. George Paterno was a decent coach in his own right, as a coordinator at Michigan State, and head coach and later athletic director at King's Point. In fact George became a head coach before Joe and a Big Ten coach many years before Joe.

For many years, George was also the voice of Penn State football on both TV and radio, starting in an era when college sports were not broadcast widely. Perhaps the saddest thing in this book, is that George (now deceased) apparently never realized how beloved he was in Pennsylvania as the always upbeat, knowlegeable, and avuncular broadcaster.

George in many ways was the antithesis of Joe. George never learned to get along, and left a trail of unsuccessful personal and professional relationships. He traces some of this to his need to tend to family responsibilities, allowing his brother to attend to his career, and some of this to weird issues like Washington power struggles and Watergate (King's Point is a federal institution).

Early on Joe realized that Penn State and Pennsylvania were run by conservative Protestant Republicans and he cultivated them, eventually becoming friends with powerbrokers like George H. W. Bush. Joe's son even ran (unsuccessfully) for Congress as a Republican. In the meantime, George was spending his week on the East Side of Manhattan, drinking and carousing with Jake LaMotta and his crowd.

The book is not well-written. This appears to be a vanity publishing outfit. At times the syntax is garbled almost to the point of total confusion. The flow is difficult, and the latter part of the book is nothing more than a season-by-season recap of Penn State highlights, that long-time season tickets holders like me already know.

But there are true insights in the early part when George tells the story of those halcyon days when the Paterno brothers were an inseparable team, especially at Brown University.

One can tell immediately that George was a clever and well-read man, if one was not familiar with his broadcasting. He has thought long and hard about his life and his role, and knows now what leads to success. George has a great knowledge and sense of history, and a clever way to analyze one's character by considering the tendencies of one's ancestors from the Byzantine or Roman era.

1 comments about Ditka.
  1. Mike Ditka didn't always have good times, or good luck. What Mike has is drive, hope, goals, believe in himself and some great experiences with family, friends & team mates.

It wasn't always easy playing hurt, but Mike endured tremendous odds and kept coming back time after time.

Mike had the best of his athletic and human abilities surface time after time. He is a legend and then some. Play with him, enjoy the game. Play against him and feel the pain.

5 comments about Kurt Warner: And the Last Shall Be First.
  1. I think that this book is one of best Kurt Warner Biographys of many. I would requst this book to a person that likes sports. Also I would say that you would have to would have to know some things about the sport of football. There is alot of terms that only the people that like sports would know about. There is some things that this book doesn't cover. If you want to know more about Kurt Warner look at some of the other books that Amozon carries.

  2. I am a huge Kurt Warner fan. However, this book was terrible. It seemed that it was thrown together so it could get to market quick. I wouldn't want anyone to waste their time with this. I normally don't try to trash items that people put a lot of work into. However, I don't feel there was lot of work put into this project. The book consists of stories/letters from people that new him. Most stories are disjointed at best. Sorry Kurt. Just don't feel this book is worthy of your achievements.

  3. I'm a big Kurt Warner fan, both as a football player and a peron. However, this book is almost degrading to him. Although everyone quoted speaks highly of Kurt, the author's presentation is extremely poor. It reads like he taped interviews and transcribed them word for word into a book. Very boring.

  4. I live in St. Louis and love both the Rams and Kurt Warner. I bought this book expecting to find out information on Warner and the magical season, but got rambling ... instead. The book is one chapter after another of people telling stories about themselves, some of which do not even know Warner. I bought the book at a local grocery store that had a huge promotion, selling copies at half-off the list price. Good books do not sell for half-price immediately after being published. It is not worthy of a match to burn it.

  5. I love books. I love St. Louis. I love sports. However, I could not even finish this book. I got it for 50 cents at the library and was quick to realize why the previous owner was able to part with it. The most enjoyable thing was that the book is so bad that someone wrote tiny notes towards the end about how pointless most of the stories were.

1 comments about Quotable Lou: The Wit, Wisdom, and Inspiration of Lou Holtz, College Football's Most Colorful and Engaging Coach (Potent Quotables).
  1. Lou Holtz is one of the greatest one-liners in Sports today. But his quotes, based on a no-nonsense philosophy of "responsibility and accountability", i.e., you are responsible for your actions, you are accountable to your school, coach and team mates, and family apply to everyday life as well.

The book is very well organized and is easy reading; the quotes are often sprinkled with humor and satire.I highly recommend it to readers of every age.
