1 comments about O.J. Simpson: American Hero, American Tragedy: American Hero, American Tragedy (Pinnacle Biography).
  1. After reading this book, I know more about O.J.'s childhood and career before the infamous murders occured. It is very informative about his days as a football star and an actor. However, I was expecting more about O.J.'s relationship with Nicole. I also did not like the way the book ended. It left you wondering whether or not O.J. is guilty. I really recommend this book if you want to know about O.J. and his rise to fame. I recommend "Raging Heart" by Sheila Weller for an intimate look at the relationship between O.J. and Nicole. Overall, it was a good book.

1 comments about Tim Couch: A Passion For The Game.
  1. A very good read. I'm not quite down with it, but a great book. There's no self-hype here by Couch. The authors do a great job taking a story of "small town boy makes good" into a story all of us can relate to in one way or another. I've been a Tim Couch fan ever since he came to Cleveland, and you'll enjoy reading about how he gets there. A definite must-read.

2 comments about Field of Valor: Duty, Honor, Country, and Winning the Heisman.
  1. While I have not yet read the book, I wish to point out that Glenn Davis never reached the rank of brigadier general. As a matter of fact, he hardly reached the rank of first lieutenant. He was too interested in Hollywood and such environs. He wasn't even a good pro player. Neither was Joe Bellino.

  2. Oh come on! How can anybody pan a book without at least opening the cover? Field of Valor is an excellent look at the service academy football programs during their glory days. It might not belong in the library of every football fan but it is a nicely produced book with a great deal of interesting information and it deserves a look, especially with bargain priced used copies out there!

4 comments about Brett Favre: A Packers Fan's Tribute.
  1. I just wanted to let other Packer fans know that this is a book
to read if you are a Brett Favre fan, well done Tom!!!
The pictures in this book are great and by the Packer photographer
Jim Biever, great shots. They bring back memories.
Tom writes this book as a true Packer fan and shares stories, pictures
and records that maybe we have not read, if you can believe that...
Order this book today and give a Packer fan a nice gift for Christmas
they will really enjoy the book.
I have added this book to my collection of Brett Favre items.
We will all miss Brett Favre! But of course one never knows...
    Brett could return in 2007!

  2. As a Packer Fan we had to have this book but it is a great story for any football fan. Brett Farve will go into the history books as one of the BEST Quaterbacks. Very Enjpyable.

  3. Reviewed by David Olvera for Reader Views (3/07)

"Brett Favre: A Packer Fan's Tribute" does not mince words and the book stays true to its title. Kertscher evaluates Favre's legendary career from crummy rookie in the pro ranks to NFL god. Rather than a long and microscopic analysis of the patron saint of Lambeau, the author cuts to the chase and offers great snapshots of Favre's career. Favre's beginnings, his hallmark comebacks, the Super Bowl, the MVPs, all laid out in clean episodes.

Kertscher also stays true as a fan. You can easily tell the author is endeared to the Packers and he relates that fandom to the reader. You cannot help but relate to Favre, the Packers, and their fans after reading this book. Sure Favre is an All-American, apple pie, Stars and Stripes kind of guy, but the author's examination of his career and even his addiction to painkillers takes you that much closer to being apart of the Green Bay scene.

I would have liked to have seen closer examinations of his personal life, especially his relationship with his father. Although I am not a Packer fan, the passing of Favre's father and Brett's on-field performance afterward was a profound NFL moment regardless of affiliation. I won't knock the author too much for it though...too close an examination would not fit well with the book's overall theme and feel.

The author's writing style is quick and to the point. I get the feeling that Kertscher isn't going for a Pulitzer and that makes the book very versatile. You can hand this book to any child and they could easily become a "Cheese Head." A great coffee table or waiting room piece...or simply what the title says...a book for fans. "Brett Favre: A Packer Fan's Tribute" is not the essential autobiography of Favre, but its strength is in its candid approach to the career of an NFL great.

  4. WOW.... what a wonderful book. If the many many many photographs don't grab and hold your attention the excellent beginning to end chapters of this mans career will.

The most professional book on an athlete I have read and appreciated in years.

The author Tom Kertscher has done an A+ job and I hope all football fans will buy and appreciate this book and add it to your book collection.

    Again...WOW!!!

1 comments about Knute Rockne: A Portrait of a Notre Dame Legend.
  1. Michael Steele has been doing books on Notre Dame football for many years. Some, like Rockne: A Bio-Bibliography (1983) are very detailed, but most, especially this book, are more in the coffee table genre. But that's o.k. because Steele is modest about his books, and makes no special claims for them.

The photos in this book are excellent and not only include many of Rockne at various stages of his life, but also of his famous players. Steele also includes pictures of many important sites in Rockne's life, and even some diagrams of plays.

The text moves swiftly through the famous coach's life and career. On occasion, Steele repeats an old and questionable chestnut, but for the most part, he gives straight-forward game-by-game details. The final section of the book contains long interviews with a number of men who played for Rockne and/or were students at Notre Dame in the 1920s. Since all of these men have since died, the interviews are often poignant, even if they are more nostalgic than truly informative.

If you are looking for a deeply researched and footnoted biography of Knute Rockne, this is not the book for you. However, if you want a pleasant journey through the coach's life, take this trip with Michael Steele.
