- The author was accidently sent to Korea as a Marine Pvt without any combat training. after he was under fire for awhile he got the CO to return him to the states for more training. From ground pounder to fighter pilot Tremendous reading. I met him at the Palm Springs Air Museum where he was dosent showing planes he had flown. You can't beleive some of his experiences!

2 comments about SOLO TO TOP WORLD.
- Solo to the Top of the World is a great American adventure story. This is a lively historic account of how the first person reached the magnetic and geographic North Pole in a open cockpit airplane, a 1939 Boeing Stearman biplane, respectively in 1999 and 200, after several others had failed, died or disappeared in the Arctic. The book has all the elements of a great thriller- danger, excitment, high risks, success against tremendous odds, but it is even better than most thrillers because it is true. Readers will not want to put this book down.
- How many of us have thought we were born at the wrong time? For most of us, the era of barnstorming heroes is long gone, but Gus McLeod brought those times back with his bare hands and an ancient biplane. The results are both harrowing and humorous. Gustavus balances wry wit with self-effacing humor. He also fills the story with well-observed, quirky characters (including an Inuit, rechristened Studley, who need help handling the ladies). This is a FUNNY book. My daughter said she enjoyed listening to me chuckling out loud as I read it.
At the same time Gustavus brings together bits of history and contemporary concerns to draw us into the meaning of his quest. This is a spiritual journey as well as a man against nature tale. Gustavus struggles with his identity in a society that wants to categorize him according to only part of his rich heritage, and he shows how to win some battles. He also survives against punishing odds, repeatedly tipped against him by frostbite, failing equipment, loneliness, exhaustion and unrelenting cold. The main creation of this book is a full, complex character, a man of charm and intelligent observations. You won't meet another like him.

- A true picture of how traveling by bike can focus on the scenery not the speed. 40 years of contrast in highways, stores, accommodations, but little change with people wanting to help. Not only should we take time to "smell the roses" but we should enjoy the poeple of this country. What will the next generation depict of our country's scenery/pollution, roads/superhighways, and people? Will fear of assault, roads blocked to bicycles, hotels unwilling to take in exhausted travelers, prevent future bicycle travel? Let's hope not. This kind of adventure should always be available.
- I enjoyed this story immensely. Peggy's descriptions made me want to get out and really SEE these places, minus the Winnebago of course. Sweat Boy, nice job and good info on the "gadget" aspect! Enough to give me some understanding without causing my eyes to glaze. Alternating the writing between the two authors, together with the infusion of June's writings, made the book an easy read. And June, what a character! She reminds me of Steinbeck's Mary Talbot from Cannery Row.
- This is not the type of book I normally read. It arrived in the mail and I had a hard time putting it down. Life passes us by all too quickly. This shows us to stop and smell the roses. Brian is my cousin. They stopped at our house on the trip through Nebraska. They were tired but happy. I hadn't seen Brian for years since life took us to different parts of the country. We had a wonderful but all too short visit. Any time I hear about someone taking a long bike trip I have to tell them about this adventure. Now I have a book to recommend. It's great!
- The Adventure Of Two Lifetimes by Peggy Newland Goetz and Brian Goetz, with June Meyer Newland, is part travelogue, part memoir, and all excitement as it tells of an American husband and wife who embarked on a bicycle tour from New York to California. The Adventure Of Two Lifetimes also transcends generations, viewing the great journey through the eyes of mother and daughter and son-in-law. An exciting, fascinating, and unique look at America from the point of view of highly dedicated and exuberant people, The Adventure Of Two Lifetimes is rewarding, enjoyable, thoughtful, and occasionally inspiring reading!
- I hated this book. I admit I didn't finish it, but what I read was dreadful. These people seem to be so impressed with themselves, you'd think no one but them had ever cycled across the country. I'm somewhat upset that I have to give the book one star, because there doesn't seem to be a 'no star' rating.

2 comments about Wings of the North.
- Dick starts off as a trapper and endures many hardships.
He later becomes a barge operator and tells of many misfortunes as well as good times.
Dick decided to take flying lessons, and becomes a well known bush pilot, living at Nahanni Butte on the Nahanni River.
He tells many anecdotes not only about his friends, but also about himself.
Prized reading for pilots.
I donated my copy to the Avaition Heritage Museum and now would like to replace it.
- Deciding to become a bush pilot at 47. Not the average! To do just a portion of the things that this man has done in his life would fulfill most. I read Nahanni first and couldn't wait to get Wings of the North through the Z-Shops. A well written joyus read. If you are a pilot, an outsoorsman, a hunter or just dream of a life without phones, faxes and the daily 9 to 5 drudgery, this book will take you away for awhile into the life of someone who has truely LIVED life. Most importantly, you never get the impression that the many things Turner has done are just "too much". That can happen sometimes with books like this. The photos are a wonderful edition. Escape for awhile or be inspired. It's up to you.

1 comments about Voyage of the Heart.
- I loved reading this book. The author's adventure became my own as he made his way north from Florida to New York - mostly in the intracoastal waterway. The best part of the book was seeing the author's love for Jesus expressed in every situation. It inspired me to be more open about my faith. It was almost hard to believe that so many things could go wrong, and yet God brought good out of every situation.

2 comments about Nicky Barr, An Australian Air Ace: A Story of Courage and Adventure.
- Nicky Barr's life and the courage he showed, were almost too unblieveable to be true. His biography by Peter Dornan is wonderfully written and impossible to put down. Nicky Barr was a quiet, unassuming man, but a fierce, aggressive fighter to his enemy in battle, and a great friend to those who knew him. The reader will come away feeling like the latter.
His wife and true love, Dot, passed away in May 2006 and Nicky joined her in June.
Thanks to Peter Dornan, for allowing me to know them both!
- Like the previous reviewer, I could hardly put this book down. It is an amazing story told in cinamgraphic detail. It would have been a good book written as fiction, but to know the stories are all true (I confirmed the outline with an RAAF offical obit) brings a part of WWII to life. Well done Peter Dornan, in taking in so much oral history and weaving it into a compelling story.

- Exhilirating and heart-wrenching! I could hardly put the book down once I got started. I went thru a roller coaster ride of emotions. I laughed, I cried. I actually thought I was THERE! Never has there been a book written like this one; from this unique point of view. WOW! Thanks to a very special "DOC" (the author), this book got my head "out of the sand" as to what I THOUGHT I knew about those who gave all in Vietnam and for those who still fight for our freedom around the world, but most of all for The Names NOT On The Wall!
- This book is so well written. It takes you through a roller-coaster of emotions; laughing one minute; crying the next. Very descriptive. I can highly recommend this one!
- This book was absolutely wonderful! I really felt like I was there. It was too real! I laughed out loud as I read the book! I also felt deep emotions of horror and sadness. I have never considered myself one that was interested in either reading or watching anything about war. This book changed all that! It really opened my eyes! It's hard for me to believe that those who fought for our country could come back to the United States and be hated. I feel ashamed that I have been so ignorant about war. Never Again! I feel so honored to have read this book! I would like to thank Doc Bear, Sarge, Stuckey and all the others for giving me the privledge of humping the trails of Go Noi Island in their boots. Semper Fi!
- I normally read a little over 100 books a year. And this is by far the best book I have ever read. And before the only books concerned with the military were H.J Riker books on the seals. Never one on vietnam. I learned of this book from my cousin who was a doc also. He had read a friends copy and ordered one, but was killed before he received it. You really feel you are there, day by day, thought by thought, good times and the bad. Most vets from vietnam do not talk much about this time. this book will not only open your eyes it will open your heart to the brave men and women that serve our country. You will laugh, cry, and be amazed of the day to day life of these men and Docs that served. His Marines. Thank you Doc Bear, It was a great experience to live thru you this time in our history.
- "Doc" Hutchings does an amazing dleivery. He takes the reader right along with him on this great story of men in combat. Hutchings also takes the reader into the blessed relief from the memories of combat. A most worthy book for anyone interested in the horror that is combat.
