2 comments about Sheheke, Mandan Indian Diplomat: The Story of White Coyote, Thomas Jefferson, and Lewis and Clark.
  1. Sheheke: Mandan Indian Diplomat By Tracy Potter (Executive Directory, Fort Abraham Lincoln Foundation, with the responsibility of administering interpretation of the On-a-Slant Mandan Indian Village) is an impressively informative biography recognizing the role that the Mandan Chief Sheheke played in Lewis and Clark's trailblazing expedition. A meticulously researched accounting, memorializing the often-overlooked contribution of a unique Native American and offering a welcomed and much appreciated additional perspective to the growing body of literature and historical reference materials concerning Lewis and Clark's famous voyage, Sheheke is an exceptionally well written contribution to the growing body of Native American History reference and Native American Biographical resource publications.

  2. Finally, the first biography of the best friend Lewis & Clark, and the American government, had among their Indian hosts, Chief Sheheke of the Mandan. "White Coyote" was mis-named "Big White" by Lewis & Clark, and is known better by that name. He is the chief who returned with Lewis and Clark to Washington to be greeted by Jefferson himself. It was the delayed and troubled return of Sheheke to the Mandan Villages that ultimately led to Meriwether Lewis's death. A fascinating new angle on the Lewis & Clark Expedition, with keen insights into the amazing Mandan Indian culture. You won't be disappointed.

  1. This is an excellent book. It is like taking the trip of a lifetime back to early 19th century Egypt

  2. The beginning is very uninteresing. Belzoni's epypt adventures are not mentioned until your half way through the book.

5 comments about Story: The Way of Water.
  1. A very thoroughly and thoughtfully researched chronicle of the life of an iconoclast. Story is a unique person even among his peers. Anne Lenehan captured far more than the typical celebrity biography!

  2. This book is the first major work by a young author. It has been written with passion, based on incredible research. This book is both educational and motivational as you witness Story's persistent efforts leading to extraordinary achievements. You are encouraged to follow his example in some small way in your own environment.

  3. This is a biography with a difference about a man whose lifetime achievements are incredible; leaving school unqualified, obtaining multiple degrees, more hours on the T38 jet than any other human being, astronaut, multiple spaceflights, multiple space walks, poet etc.
As well as the straight biography you get quotes and writings from Story himself. Somehow he seems to view the world differently from other people.
A really good read but enough to make even the highest achiever seem like a bit of a failure!

  4. I thoroughly enjoyed "Story, the Way of Water". It is a gripping book that keeps you riveted to the development of Story's life as he overcomes the problems he encountered. The book gives a clear picture of his strong character, intelligence, and robustness. The great part of the book is that
it conveys his feelings as he accomplished the many great tasks he set out to do. Using those that knew him to help tell his story was truly magnificent. I picked up the book and could not put it down until I finished it.

  5. A very detailed look into the life of an iconoclast. This is a truly deep dive into, not only the life of Story Musgrave, but his philosophies and methodologies toward living life the way you want. It stares into hardships unflinchingly and takes the viewer into space with the proper sense of anticipation and awe.

A very great read presented in an original and entertaining manner. Not your typical biography.

  1. Found the book very well written. It was very interesting to me as I grew up on one of the farms she wrote about. My wife did not grow up in the area and found it well written also. The last chapter was done well, in bringing the book to a close.

1 comments about With Our Own Eyes: Eyewitnesses to the Final Days of Amelia Earhart.
  1. I am interested in Amelia Earhart and her disappearance mystery for 21 years. I have read this book and my impression is very positive.
During decades there were a lot of books, articles etc. written about this subject (Earhart's disappearance), but alas too frequently they were overflooded by rumors, baseless guesses, stretches and speculations without any firm factual support.
The Mike Campbell's book is principally different. It is based on firm first-hand evidence from many independent sources, whose credibility gives no food for doubts - there are former US Soldiers, who really were on the place of events and saw what they saw.
The book is free of guesses and speculations - authors doesn't builds some "versions" or "theories" but just presents the data obtained by them during many years from many independent sources, with extensive details, and the book includes many written reports and official documents.
As result the book gives a very complete and convincing picture about What Happened with Amelia Earhart. The book is written with clear accuracy and respect to facts and to the "subject" of the book - the great heroine of 20th century and US history, whose name alas was already too frequently used for unfair speculations of any sorts. Mike Campbell's book makes an extremely good job for to correct this sad error.
I would highly recommend this book for anybody interested in this great mystery.

1 comments about The Romance of Elsewhere: A Half-Century of Connecting By Sea, By Air, By Rail.
  1. This is a delightful book of travel anecdotes. The stories are humorous, colorful and insightful. Taken together, they make the case for frequent travel as a way of life, generating pleasure, friendship and insight into other cultures that really can't be obtained any other way. They certainly put the inevitable mishaps and discomforts of travel in perspective. As I was reading them, they called to mind many of my own travel adventures and made me long to visit some of the places that the author has been to. She's been at least once to England, France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Greece, Yugoslavia, Egypt, Israel, India, China, Japan, Peru, Argentina, Nepal, Kenya, Turkey and many other countries. I just wish that she - after all, an American - had included more travel stories about the USA.

5 comments about Fearless on Everest: The Quest for Sandy Irvine.
  1. Julie Summers sensitive telling of the story of Sandy Irvine is not only a great read, but is written with intelligence, grace and wit. Irvine's personality looms large in the book, and the reader is easily captivated by his infectious personality. Explorer, lover, adventurer, journalist -- one can easily imagine Summer's Irvine on the silver sceen, portrayed by Harrison Ford or Mel Gibson. This wonderful book will be enjoyed by climbers, mountaineers, armchair explorers and laypeople alike. A real tour de force, the only question that arises after reading is: who is going to option it, and when is the movie coming out?

  2. Fearless On Everest: The Quest For Sandy Irvine is an intensely personal, candid, and informative account of the life of a young man who died at the age of 22 while on an expedition to climb Mt. Everest. Written with a narrative smoothness that completely engages the reader's attention, biographer and Irvine family member Julie Summers includes newly discovered letters and photographs and specifically addresses a long-debated question in mountaineering circles: Why did George Leigh Mallory choose the young, less-experienced Andrew Irvine as his partner on so hazardous an enterprise? Also very highly recommended for mountaineering enthusiasts are three related titles from Mountaineers Books addresses the doomed Mallory-Irvine expedition: Ghosts Of Everest: The Search For Mallory & Irvine (699-5, $.....); The Mystery Of Mallory & Irvine: Fully Revised Edition (726-6, $.....); The Wildest Dream: The Biography Of George Mallory (741-X, $......).

  3. This is a very well-written and researched book. It provides an introspective and analytical look into the man of mystery on the expedition...Sandy Irvine. The photos, family anecdotes, and treasure trove of memorabilia recently discovered provided a full and satisfying read. You can't know all about the 1924 expedition until you know about what made Sandy Irvine tick.

  4. I'm afraid I have to disagree with other reviewers of this book. The writing is often awkward and grammatically challenged (to use a current euphemism). And Sandy Irvine comes across as a rather ordinary young man, self centered, good at sports, and good with his hands, but lacking in any sort of intellectual sophistication. It was this very sophisitcation and intellectualism that made Mallory the interesting figure he remains. Had Mallory been a mere hearty, he would have far less interesting. In contrast to Mallory, Irvine strikes one as eactly what this biography tries to convince one he was not, i.e., a follower who had little idea of what Mallory was leading him into.

Because of Irvine's commoness and the bad writing (Where oh where was an editor!?), this is hardly worth the time, and certainly not worth the money.

  5. Frequently overshadowed by his mentor and climbing partner, George Mallory, Sandy Irvine is long overdue a biography worthy of his accomplishments. I can understand the frustration that people have with encountering someone not driven by ego or the incessant need to belittle others. In that respect perhaps Sandy is a bit too normal by modern standards and can be accused of being a little too nice. Nonetheless in his short life he still managed to accomplish some very great things and this book does a wonderful job of highlighting those moments. It is not perhaps all one could hope for in a study of the 1924 Everest Expedition but then no other book has set a suitably high standard to be considered authoritative. As a collection of data which many overlook this has to be considered a must read for the Everest fanatic.
