- ... are the chronological events leading from past to present in "She Doesn't Sing Anymore". I'm grateful that Ernestine took the time to give account of her passionate heartfelt journey of a disease that as so eloquently put "comes as a thief in the night". Prior to reading this work, the only things I were painfully aware of in regards to the condition was that 1) it marked its victim with a toddler-like state of not remembering a past because they were too young to build memories 2) the inability to formulate words and 3) that this wasn't a disease that was prevalent in the African American community. Out of the hundreds of people I've known throughout the years within my community ... there is only one that I know of personally that has been stricken with this disease. Ignorance isn't always bliss and just because you don't know of something doesn't mean that it doesn't exist. Ignoring it simply won't make it go away. Although we tend to take care of our elderly until their demise, we may be too quick to label or pass off warning signs as "old timers and old age". The author's accounts challenge me to become more attentive in recognizing the difference of "simply forgetting" to "there may possibly be an underlying condition".
My recommendations are that this embodied work be shared amongst anyone in the position of caring for others as well as children of elderly parents. Her remarkable faith in God, strength, courage and the level of commitment along with endurance the author has for her mother is purely unbridled love and compassion. Ernestine's journal heightens the senses as she allows you to share in the laughter while crying along with her as she's venturing in the quest of unanswered questions all the while becoming completely in awe as she recollects the bewilderment of others.
Thank you Ms Williams-Burtley for teaching us "Don't take anything for granted! Life is precious! Live each day as if it's your last!"
- I enjoyed this book tremendously. It is a wonderful, heartfelt, honest, sharing of the experiences of caring for and dealing with a loved one who has Alzheimer's. A definite read for anyone who is struggling with all the emotions they are going through as a caregiver.
- This book gave me comfort, courage and wisdom in a very similar yet different walk with my mother and Alzheimer's Disease. I plan to read this book again at a later stage and would like others in the family to read it as well. The writer spoke from her heart and reminded me that as caretakers we must treat our loved ones exactly as we would want to be treated. Simple things like massaging lotion on arms and legs or giving hugs can do wonders in fulfilling our need for a human touch. When the writer began to wear down under demanding care for her mother, she abruptly changed her attitude from feeling burdened to being blessed to be able to care for her mother. I would like to say, though, that if you are a stickler for proper grammar - beware - this book reads like a journal and is full of grammatical errors.

- I truly enjoy this book. working with people who have disablities and having the opportunity to reach and accomplish their dream is exciting. Our mission is changing the world for people with disablilites by providing opportunties and skills necessary to fulfill needs and pursue dreams. this is exactly what the book is about.
- I saw a presentation given my Larry today.. What an amazing man! I was given his book as a gift for entering the world of special education teaching. What an amazing man! He is fantabulous, as it this book!
