2 comments about On Being Hip.
  1. If you have had your hip replaced you must exercise sensibly and under medical supervision to get back to good health. Like me, Jack Kelly, had a new hip. We know what is like to recover from this successful operation. To help others recover quickly Jack devised a simple set of basic exercises that increases flexibility, bone density, and energy and helps you lose weight and control your stress level. The exercises are well illustrated, take 30 minutes on 3 days a week, and will become an essential part of your life after a few weeks when you see the benefits they bring. This special book adds importantly to the experience of hip replacement of the 14 stories told by patients in my own "All about hip replacement".

  2. I hate to criticize this book since Mr. Kelley seems like a heck of a nice guy and does offer good information. BUT...much of the information about the surgery I got from my surgeon, pre-surgery classes at the hospital, hospital-provided literature and free sites on the web. I am 53 years old. I had my hip replaced Dec. 9, not using cement but natural knit. By Jan. 21 I was walking without a cane or crutches. But, I am younger and for 9 months prior, worked out hard - treadmill, stepper, weights, stretching. Within 10 days of surgery I was back at upper body weight work. I found the exercises from my therapist adequate. So if you are younger and used to exercising, this book is not for you. Older, not used to exercise, it may be helpful. It also does not mention aquatic therapy, a great vehicle, particularly for older hip patients.

  1. This book was a very moving piece of literature about the realities that families face when a loved one is hospitalized with severe injuries. The author's journal, being written to her loved one, is very touching and shows how close knit their family was, and still is, during their crisis. The author explains her perpective on death after dealing with the loss of her loved one. All in all, this book is one of the better books I have read.

5 comments about A Joyful Encounter: My Mother, My Alzheimer Clients, and Me.
  1. A Joyful Encounter... is a tender glimpse into a fragile world where we might find ourselves later in life. Lynn Scott's poetic narrative leaves me with a new understanding of the human spirit reaching out to heal present relationships--and those we thought we'd lost forever. It is truly a beautiful book.

  2. This book consists of short vignettes about Ms. Scott's relationships with Alzheimer clients, primarily while working as an activities director at a facility she calls "Homeport." Her ability to bring out the personalities of her clients through singing, sharing, and laughter really helped me to feel a connection with people who have lived rich, full lives, and who continue to have much to give us despite their memory issues. They are often perceived by most of us as just shells of what they once were, and people who require too much effort to get to know and love. But Ms. Scott has no such prejudices, and is rewarded for it, particularly in finding peace about her own mother's dementia. I am inspired.

  3. This book weaves together the author's journey working with people with Alzheimer's disease, and her journey of resolution with her long-deceased mother, who had dementia in her final years. It is a personal memoir, tender, funny, surprising, and redemptive.

  4. This book was selected by our bookclub and we had the pleasure of having the author meet with us to discuss the book, In the bookclub every woman had direct experience with a parent or parents with dementia/alzheimer's. We have all read about the devestation of these diseases, the way your loved one melts away, lost in some other time or place.

Lynn Scott's book gives hope. She offers us a new look at these aging individuals, she shows us how aspects of their essential selves remain. She offers us methods and techniques for staying in touch with these wandering minds. Singing old familiar songs, coloring, a photo album of life "before the fall", simple accessible tools for giving and receiving joy and love from those we think we are losing bit by bit, day by day. She shows us how these sufferers still seek and offer love and affection, humor and insight, opportunities to be their best selves and opportunities for us to be better daughters, sons, spouses and caretakers to our dementia-altered family members and friends.

I recommend this book as requried reading for anyone working with or living with patients suffering from dementia and alzheimer's. I think it would be a heartwarming read for anyone seeking silver linings.

  5. Lynn's experiences were meaningful because they mimicked the relationship that I had with my mother and others that I visited at the nursing facility where mom was a resident for a number of years. Lynn is a remarkable individual. Working with Alzheimer patients requires a lot of compassion. Some of Lynn's experiences led me to tears and others had me laughing out loud. Her patients were lucky to have her because she understood that inside those trapped bodies were living spirits that needed love, attention, and a voice to communicate their needs. One of Lynn's most powerful passages comes when she speaks about their "human responses to misguided abuses of their personal power."

Also the references and data points should proved to be helpful, particularly for new caregivers of Alzheimer patients.

  1. Liebling writes with warmth and depth on a most difficult subject: donating a kidney to his sister. It is a surprisingly easy read for such a topic.

  2. I read this most sensitive book about the lives of both a brother who donated his kidney and his sister who was the recepient. The book reveals how the transplant effected both of their lives. This is a timely book since there are many more transplants today than when they went thru their ordeal. The book should be read by those who are about to be a donor, and those who will be a recepient. In addition it should be read by any close relatives and friends. There are many sensitive, revealing and beautiful passages The book was well written by Mr Liebling and is easy to read.

    .

  3. This true story is told in a gentle, caring manner, and is easy to read for both young and old alike. Lawrence Liebling reflects on the conflict that he encounters about a decision that will not only impact on his life, but on his sister's and family's life forever. This story is about love, faith, courage and trust that every reader can relate to. It gives the reader a chance to reflect on his/her values. The author ultimately conveys the power of love through his story. Liebling's sensitivity and insights are meaningful, and touch the heart. The reader will reflect on the meaning of life and relationships, laugh and cry, and be touched by this beautiful story.

  4. This is not a clinical account of a kidney transplant. Rather, it is a very personal account of the author's experience with his sister back in the 1070s. Back then, such transplants were not nearly as common as today. The author recounts the toll his sister's kidney disease had on the entire family and what the family went through both before the surgery and in the remaining decades of his sister's life. One minor criticism, the author does not state which hospital the surgery took place in. I am interested in such details. Nonetheless, this is a very moving personal account of how the donor, recipient and family coped with kidney diseaes, the transplant and it's aftermath.

1 comments about The Civil War Letters of Dr. Harvey Black: A Surgeon With Stonewall Jackson (Army of Northern Virginia).
  1. Dr. Harvey Black, grandson of one of the founders of Blacksburg, Virginia, served as surgeon of the 4th Virginia Regiment, as surgeon of the Stonewall Brigade, and as surgeon in charge of the Second Corps Field Hospital of the Army of Northern Virginia. Black's Civil War letters, which begin with Stonewall Jackson's Shenandoah Valley Campaign of 1862 and end with Jubal Early's Valley Campaign of 1864, discuss climactic battles like Second Manassas, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. Literate and perceptive, Black had interesting things to say about figures like Stonewall Jackson, Robert E. Lee, Jubal Early, and Thomas Rosser. The Second Corps Field Hospital was the site of the amputation of Jackson's arm at Chancellorsville, and Black was one of three surgeons who assisted Dr. Hunter McGuire in the operation. In addition to Harvey Black's letters, the book contains three letters of his wife Mollie, all that have survived. They poignantly reveal the trials Southern women faced during the war, fending for themselves and their families. The small town of Blacksburg in Appalachian Virginia also plays an important part in the story. An appendix transcribes and analyses the free and slave schedules for the 1860 Blacksburg census.

Black was a significant figure in the Civil War and postwar Virginia medicine and education. After the war, Black helped found what is today known as Virginia Tech.

1 comments about Long Walk Through War: A Combat Doctor's Diary (Military History Ser. Series, 4).
  1. First, I must confess that I know Dr Huebner personally, as he delivered my mother of me, and saved my life when I was a boy with asthma. Withstanding that, however, I was really pleased to read his diary of his tour through Italy as a combat doctor. I am struck by his honesty, and directness. It is a catalog of patients, Italian girls, and sneaking around regulations, yet it is a good read which lets one into his life in this critical time. Highly recommended. I, and many American and German soldier patients are very grateful that this highly decorated young doctor choose to honor his American draft notice, and not the one he received from the Reich.
