  1. I am a white female who is into all kinds of music and I found Snoop and 2Pac, both to be very talented people. I felt that reading this book would help me understand the lifestyles of a gangsta rapper. I am afraid all I found was a complete waste of life and talent. Death Row Records was appropriately named. All involved seemed to have encountered death at some time. It's really a shame that people these days are so quick to pick up a gun and use it without regard for human life. Hind sight is indeed 20/20. Nothing will bring Tupac or Biggie Smalls back and still the guns and drugs are out there every day, stealing away the great talents from our world. People wake up. Death isn't the answer to Life, it is only the end of an era.

  2. Just like Li'l Kim says first you get the money then you get the power after you get the power you get the respect. No matter what coast your from most people got respect for Snoop and his crew. Told to you by McKinley 'Malik',Jr. Lee you get the inside info about the rise of Death Row Records. This book is one of the ones that will make you want to keep reading forever. After you read tihs book you'll know more about Suge, Snoop, Dre, and how they came to be.

  3. Ok well Tupac Shakur is the best rapper that ever liver and no one will ever top him. It is a same what happened to him he was very talented and i wish he was still here. I have ever cd he ever maede and he is mostly all i listen to.. I think all the books writen about him are good as long as they say the good points about him to and how sweet lhe was.Tupac Amuru Shakur R.I.P.

  4. This book really let's you know how it was in the midst of the Death Row project. I was really amazed on the life of McKinley Malik Lee, Jr. Buy the book. You will not be disappointed . I hear he is recording great music now (gospel rap) that should be released at the beginning of the year (2000). Wouldn't it be awesome to hear somthing with him and Snoop Doggy Dogg? Platinum baby!!!!! God Bless!!!!!!

  1. Wow! What a page turner "Not On The Level" is! I am very impressed with this well-written, entertaining, and thought-provoking book by former Secret Service agent Mike Maddaloni. Uncle Tony and Uncle Sal will be burned into your brain, while Joe De Falco's narration pulls it all together. Get this book asap!

  2. Our main character Joe was born and raised in Philadelphia and we are swept into his entertaining and action packed life in this outstanding read by author Michael Maddaloni. Joe's dad died in WWII and Joe grew up in his grandparents' home with his mom and sister and his two uncles Tony and Sal.

We are taken through the life of Joe, his school years, military and Secret Service days and on to corporate business and I must admit the stories that he tells keep you fascinated and are quite interesting. We learn of greed, deceit, backbiting, corruption, and all that goes on in every aspect of life, but I feel that the author was showing how these practices definitely mold people's characters and future depending on how they deal with it.

Through it all, to me, the stealers of the book were Uncle Tony and Uncle Sal who both had such an impact on Joe's life. Perhaps it is because I too had an Uncle Tony and Uncle Sal who to this day I remember fondly. Not on the Level is a well written book that definitely holds your interest and stirs up many myriads of emotions. I believe you would do well to get your own copy for a very enjoyable read.

  3. "Not on the Level" is the fictional biography of Joe De Falco. Joe was born in a working-class neighborhood of Philadelphia. His father died, in a rather ignominious fashion, during World War Two, and Joe grew up in his paternal grandparents' home, along with his mother and two uncles, Tony and Sal. Tony had also served in the military, then became a school teacher, and was an honest, straightforward, hard-working guy. Sal never hurt anyone, personally, but he often cut corners, and he had many unsavory but powerful friends. All of this affected Joe, as did his days at an all-(Italian-)Catholic high school, and subsequent time in the Marines. Joe kept encountering interesting, forthright, honest, well-intentioned people, but not many of them. He met more people who were corrupt, abusive, dishonest, conniving, and/or sadistic.

After high school, Joe went into the Marines, where he continued to be exposed to very mixed influences. He ended up in the Secret Service, where he was quite successful at catching check-forgers and counterfeiters, as well as having the honor of protecting two United States Presidents. Upon retirement, he went into the corporate security business, and was very successful, while continuing to encounter instances of corruption, incompetence, loophole-abuse, opportunism, and greed.

This book is very much a character study, with the ever-present question being: With all of these divergent influences, what path shall Joe De Falco end up taking?

Mr. Maddaloni writes very, very well. Every time I had a chance to read, I did so with enthusiasm, and I regretted having to stop, each time life dared to interfere with my reading. While never overloading the reader with detail, the quality of detail given makes it very difficult to believe that one is not reading a true autobiography. From the brief "About the Author" page at the end, it is clear that, while the author and the book's protagonist are not the same person, they certainly had many things in common, which probably Mr. Maddaloni create the very realistic character of Joe De Falco.

It is very hard for me to continue writing, as I now want to explain why I did not give this book five stars, as I wanted to, without giving away the ending. I will simply say that, after really enjoying this well-told story, the ending was not at all what I wanted it to be. I am not referring to a sudden decline in writing quality, or anything like that, as the story is well-done, right to the final punctuation mark. I just wanted, very much, for the ending to not be what it was, although the ending was quite realistic.

If Mr. Maddaloni continues to write this well, he will be an author to watch and enjoy.

  4. Mike Maddaloni nails it! So much that appears legit is so not on the level, especially once you get through all the facades and veneers. I know Mike and worked with him in Philadelphia. What he fictionalizes in this book is how it was, still is and will be until Christ returns. Great job Mike! Fact is I still remember the many not on the level experiences we had.

  1. I have folloed the Ice Man tapes on TV and when I saw this book, I knew I would read more details of this Mafia man. The Ice Man did not dissapoint me and held my attention to the last page. I was able to understand why Richard Kuklinski became The Ice Man, he had a disturbing childhood which led him to murder. I was shocked by the murders that he committed and how Richard grew into a callous murderer, The Ice Man is a well deserved name for Richard. This book will not dissapoint you.
