1 comments about Our Dream Was Canada: Two Suitcases, Children and a Dog.
- I just finished this book in Czech, so can't comment on the English translation. I truly enjoyed Zidek's book and couldn't put it down for the 2 days it took me to read it. I was hugely impressed by Zidek's engaging writing (she is a forester by training), by her drive and optimism, and by her family's resilience and resourcefulness during some very difficult times. Despairing over the political situation in communist Czechoslovakia, which included a devastation of the environment through poor management, ignorance, and neglect, Zidek and her husband decided to take their children and their beloved dog and leave the country, with Canada as their ultimate goal. After a dangerous border crossing from Yugoslavia into Austria, and then into Germany, they spend some time as refugees in the German Alps while waiting for a visa to Canada. They finally make it, thanks to the help of many decent people along the way, some of them strangers. What happens in Canada is a long string of adventures which I will not divulge, but which keep you turning the pages. I have to admire the Zideks' willingness to take any kind of work, to live in trailers and campers, to "do without" in all kinds of ways, in order to build a life of their dreams in one of the most beautiful places on earth. Thank you for writing this book!

1 comments about W. Stanford Reid: An Evangelical Calvinist In The Academy (Mcgill-Queen's Studies in the History of Religion).
- MacLeod's book on Reid is outstanding and I highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in Presbyterian or evangelical history. As an evangelical mainline Presbyterian (PCUSA) I found Reid's life and thought to be inspirational. Reid's life demonstrates that evangelicals can have a positive impact on their mainline denominations. MacLeod's writing is clear and I found many parts of the book to be intriguing. The background history and context that MacLeod details is tremendous. Also, I thought it was interesting to learn about Reid's relationship with J. Gresham Machen. This book has my highest recommendation.

1 comments about Across the Keewatin Icefields: Three Years Among the Canadian Eskimos, 1913-1916.
- I recently bought this book second hand thinking I might enjoy looking at some of the pictures. Travel journals are not my thing.
I only read a few paragraphs and I was hooked. It's a fantastic adventure story by an 'ordinary' guy. He frequently gets the wrong end of the stick (and thanks to editor's notes you'll be able to tell when), but his warmth and humanity always show through. This is less a story about Inuits than it is about a man who finds himself in an alien culture and a harsh environment. The narrative is often funny, always entertaining, and occasionally moved me to tears.
