  1. ...of what it's like to be involved with a small-town minor league baseball team. The author uses humor and sensitivity to capture how his love for baseball as a child - lost for a number of years - was rekindled by his association with the Waterloo, Iowa team. It's a relatively quick and easy read. My only negative, is that because it's a series of independent essays combined in this book, there are a number of redundancies throughout. That is a minor downside however. I plan on reading more by the author.

  2. As mentioned in the previous review, this work is a collection of separate essays. Because of that there is a lot of overlap in terms of the stories told. Each essay recaps what the previous essay already recapped, and so on. And on and on. When the author expresses fresh material, the reading is a true pleasure. Therefore, I think these essays would be better digested read separately, ie between readings from another work. I read them straight through and kept getting the feeling that I had heard this story a thousand time before. Also, half of the book is the author critisizing his own work. Is it just me, or does critisizing ones own work, or rather praising one's own work, seem amazingly egocentric?????

  1. A gem if you can find it (it was withdrawn from circulation).

A lively & initmately detailed account of one of the singularly most influential economists of the 20th Century.

Kindleberger's "Manias, Panics & Crashes" is considered required reading for the world's central bankers. This autobiography recounts the many people CPK crossed paths with in his long & rich life.

2 comments about Behind the Scenes in Advertising.
  1. Jeremy Bullmore tells us what advertising is really about & what advertisements should try to do. Sound dry? Oh no, not this book. On every facet of the trade the leaps & bounds of a brilliant mind make you chuckle, and think hard. Bullmore the man shines out from every chapter with spot-on illustrations & very funny anecdotes. It's like being at a series of personal tutorials. Try saying something moderately silly about advertising to him and he twinkles indulgently before demurring. He is a tolerant man. Say something stupid, un-thought-through and two beady eyes flick before his gentle correction. But make the mistake of underestimating the worth of advertising, of the trade's role at the heart of commerce, or even worse, pass unfair comment on a co-practitioner, then a flashed gamma glare and merciless direct hit will send anyone down in flames. "Behind the Scenes" shows you why Jeremy Bullmore is the most respected, indeed, notwhithstanding his grimace of embarrassment, the best-loved man in a trade that will never get its desserts. So are there no critical opportunities in this book for nit-pickers & loop-holers? I guess there will be some. But even the most determined of old adversaries will struggle to deny the great value of Bullmore's learning and his never-waning willingness to share it. The Reverend quietly sayeth: "Yet listen, ye Unbelievers". This compilation shows he has been proving his points in the most civilised of fashions, for over 40 years.

  2. A good book is one that is written well by someone who has something interesting and original to say. The cumulative wisdom and insight of a genuinely creative mind marks Jeremy Bullmore out as an original thinker, not just about advertising, but life in business. A book such as this can only be written by someone who has made the journey, learned from the road and looked back in enlightenment. Jeremy Bullmore has that kind of perspective and it comes through beautifully in his writing in a highly entertaining way. I read this book on a flight from London to Chicago. When I arrived in Chicago I felt I just had six hours with a great conversationalist who made advertising effortlessly interesting. Many have tried but, for me, David Ogilvy is the only other person who has ever achieved that in a book.

  4. I am an experienced web developer, and have signed up with Affiliate Networks some time ago. I thought I could gain more tips to improve my business by reading this book. I was fooled that a book with this sticker price was worth it.

The first 100 pages discuss Excel, Word, Internet Explorer, search engines, ftp, and making a simple web page. The publisher should be ashamed to sell this book for more than $9.00. It has large print, and much useless "bla bla bla...

Do you know how to use Word, Excel, and FrontPage? Can you search the Internet for this keyword: "Affiliate Programs" then you are on your way. I am sending this book back to Amazon, it is a rip off, and feel very ripped off and violated. This book should be pulled from the market, or sold for $9.99.

Where is the ZERO Star rating? I wish Amazon had it.

  5. I bought this book a while ago. I have not put it into practice yet, but from the perspective of the information made available, it is very good. Granted, there is some stuff at the beginning that is fairly rudimientary to a computer person, but I think the author's intention was to make a book that anyone could pick up and use. There is some pretty sophisticated stuff that she goes into a lot of detail about in terms of analyzing the potential of various items to sell, various keywords, etc. It seems to me like she is actually giving away a ton of valuable information for a reasonable price, and I would definitely recommend this book, if you want a hands-on, practical guide to the nuts and bolts of affiliate marketing. She goes into a lot of detail about different tools to use, etc.
