  1. Layne demonstrates the efficacy of his formula "attitude plus courage equals hope". After finishing this easy and sometimes humerous book, I had the insight and courage to rework the 2004 goals for my company. #1 on the list has nothing explicitly to do with revenue or market share. It is : Be the employer of choice in our market....CREATE & MAINTAIN AN INTERNAL ENVIRONMENT FOR ALL TEAM MEMBERS TO THRIVE, NOT JUST SURVIVE.
This and other pearls of relationship wisdom are found throughout Layne's book. I highly recommend it.

  2. Reading Bruce's book was a refreshing insight into how one man overcame obstacles that would stop others dead in their tracks. Through perseverance and an endless "can do" attitude, Bruce weaves his history of success. Bruce's success in business was only accomplished with what jumps off the pages as a relentless dedication to leading a balanced personal life. I highly recommend reading one man's story of how he succeeded and impacted his world!

  3. I found this book to be very uplifting and motavational. It shows how someone can overcome and learn to accept what they cannot change. And to carry on and thrive in the face of illness. I would definately recommend this to anyone dealing with Parkinson's. This book has something for everyone!

  4. Bruce Layne is one of the most unique, incredible individuals I have ever met. He is an inspiration not only to myself, but to everyone who meets him. He truly cares for people and their welfare, and I am living testament to that. Ten years ago, when he came into my life, I had no idea about the gifts he would teach me. My Gift, is an inspirational journey that leads you through life's challenges and having a strong faith of how to handle life even after being diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. One of the purposes of "My Gift" is to donate all proceeds to researchers to enable them to become closer to finding a
Cause and Cure for Parkinson's disease. "The Layne Family Charities is a 501-C-3 Non Profit Corporation."

1 comments about George Woods and the World Bank.
  1. Robert Oliver's unique biography of George David Woods, who in 1963 became the fourth president of the World Bank, is based on dozens of in-depth interviews, as well as the historical record.

George Woods transformed the World Bank from a relatively passive investment organization into an active leader of world development. He pushed for greatly increased lending in support of agriculture and education, worked closely with the United Nations, and revived and greatly strengthened economic analysis in the Bank itself. He also initiated measures to expand the equity investments of the International Finance Corporation and sought annual funding of one billion dollars for the International Development Association, the Bank's soft-loan affiliate. He retired in 1968 after inducing Robert McNamara to be his successor.

Oliver's lively biography offers not only a full picture of Woods and his pivital contributions to the World Bank's development, but also reflects the changes that occurred in the 1960s within both the agency and the enviroment in which it functioned.

  1. This is an interesting book, though the writer didn't appear to have access to enough information about LL Bean.I found the book repetitious at times.

  2. Not an award-winner as a biography or even as a corporate history, but a worthwhile read all the same. I picked up a copy on a whim at a used bookstore and was pleasantly intrigued enough to finish the whole thing. Uncovered here are the habits and quirks of Leon Leonwood Bean, his stereotypical New England lifestyle and business philosophies, and the challenges the mail-order company faced from his death in 1966 to the time of this publication in 1985. The most surprising -- and yet somehow, not totally unexpected -- fact that the reader takes away is the contradiction of the company mystique and the demographics of its typical customer. It's rural Maine versus East and West Coast suburbia. Wearers of the Maine Hunting Shoe or the chamois cloth shirt are more comfortable hunting for their kids on the soccer field sidelines or fishing for compliments at the local country club watering hole. And their buying habits changed not only their status quo but also the daily life of residents of Freeport, Maine. Marketing students may therefore find the latter chapters more interesting than the beginning biographical ones. Maybe one of them will continue the study and write an up-to-date version of it, since L.L. Bean, Inc. is obviously still finding ways to survive.
