1. Reading this book, I felt right on the water--pitching and rolling with the waves. The first essay by Marie Beaver brings the reader directly into the essence of what it means to work in a natural environment and to make choices about one's life. Thank you to Fields for collecting a reminder of a natural world and an occupation now in decline.

This book is a collection of storys of commercial fishing from fishing in the bering sea or around alaska sea urchin fishing in the atlantic also fishing in louisana.Some are well known authors for those familar with commercial fishing and books that i would definitely recommend if you like this book.Such as linda greenlaws book "The hungry ocean" spike walkers book "working on the edge working in alaskas most dangerous profession" an excellent book .This book cover some womens roles in fishing as in fishing for crabs in the bering sea some tough women. I would also recommend any book by william mccloskey whether it be fiction or non fiction

1. I was assigned this book for class, and I wasn't too fond of it. It's not that I think Mother Jones' efforts were unimportant. From what I read, she seems to have been a very brave and passionate woman, totally selfless in her cause. We could use more people like her today.
   
   But the book itself was awfully repetative. If you weren't alive during the time that the events happened, which of course you weren't, and if you don't know much about the subject, the events seem to repeat themselves over and over. Mother Jones goes to an overworked, underpaid coal mining town, leads the workers in a strike, the company owners do all they can to supress their efforts, until at last one side wins. Wash, rinse, repeat.
   
   I think that Mother Jones and the Labor Movement are excellent things to read about, but I think it would be best to read a book with more historical explanation. I would prefer one that gave information about the individual towns and people she helped, and those involved in the cause, so that they would not all blend together.

1. It's beautifully illustrated and he relates many interesting and deliteful anocdotes about the Beretta family. Less attention is paid to the technical side, I do agree that Beretta firearms are uniformly of a high quality but Wilson's appaissels are uniformly glowing, fail to acknowledge some shortcomings (as gangarosa did) and are technically no more informative than the catalogs (which he excerpts from often). I read this book after reading Gene Gangarosa's Modern Beretta Firearms (which I also reviewed) and it compliments many of the shortcomings of the Gangarosa book. There is much more focus on their shotguns and sporting rifles. Unlike Gangarosa's book where Berettas are often talked about in relation to other inovations in firearms. Wilson's book is narrowly focused in talking only about Beretta products.

   The worst part about this book is when he talks about James Bond. It sounds like such a sales pitch because while he mentions that James Bond originally had a Beretta .25ACP pocket pistol he doesn't tell us what model (Model 418 which is out of production, perhaps the company wanted us to buy one of their fine current production pocket pistols?) and remarks that in the first movie Dr. No he had to replace it with "a .380 caliber semi-automatic pistol." Like he couldn't possibly say another companies name (he even gets it wrong, Bond had a Walther PPK in .32ACP). There are other technical innacuracies. Your best option as a fan is to buy both Wilson's (the human side and colourful history) and Gangarosa's (the more technical and firearms hobbiest oriented) book. This one is well written and might have been the definitive beretta book if Wilson had Gangarosa's in depth knowledge.

   Why is this book the more sales pitch and coffee table-like book? It would seem that that would more likely describe the Gangarosa book because it was published by Stoeger (which is owned under Beretta holdings). I would read another Gangarosa book because he writes more generally of firearms history, hobby, and innovation but Wilson's book is of interest only to the fan.




2. I had hoped this book would provide some useful information on older SO shotguns. The book devotes lots of pages to the subject, but it seems that almost all of the information is available through the old catalogs that are downloadable from Beretta.com. There seemed to be an effort by Wilson and Beard to build more romance and mystique into the Beretta brand, hey guys that's what Beretta has a marketing department for!

   This is a beautiful book for the coffee table but if your looking for a book with useful data then keep searching.




3. If you love all things Beretta, then you will appreciate this superb book. Wilson magically transports you through 475 years of history to Gardone, Val Trompia, Northern Italy, by way of some of the most delightful examples of the perfect blending of walnut, metal and handcrafted artistry.

Some other reviewer scoffed that this is book is merely an effort to create "a mystique and romance" about Beretta, but Beretta has earned this after nearly 500 years. Wilson just captures the essence of the "mystique." Sure this book is a coffee table tome, but it is beautifully illustrated and fun to read and skim through! I give it 4.5/5.0 stars.



5. I bought the book hoping it would allow me to learn more about several older Beretta shotguns I own. Other than a table on dates of manufacture in the index, that used to be avilable on line for free, there was very little usable detailed information.

4. I am an experienced web developer, and have signed up with Affiliate Networks some time ago. I thought I could gain more tips to improve my business by reading this book. I was fooled that a book with this sticker price was worth it.
   
   The first 100 pages discuss Excel, Word, Internet Explorer, search engines, ftp, and making a simple web page. The publisher should be ashamed to sell this book for more than $9.00. It has large print, and much useless "bla bla bla...
   
   Do you know how to use Word, Excel, and FrontPage? Can you search the Internet for this keyword: "Affiliate Programs" then you are on your way. I am sending this book back to Amazon, it is a rip off, and feel very ripped off and violated. This book should be pulled from the market, or sold for $9.99.
   
   Where is the ZERO Star rating? I wish Amazon had it.



5. I bought this book a while ago. I have not put it into practice yet, but from the perspective of the information made available, it is very good. Granted, there is some stuff at the beginning that is fairly rudimientary to a computer person, but I think the author's intention was to make a book that anyone could pick up and use. There is some pretty sophisticated stuff that she goes into a lot of detail about in terms of analyzing the potential of various items to sell, various keywords, etc. It seems to me like she is actually giving away a ton of valuable information for a reasonable price, and I would definitely recommend this book, if you want a hands-on, practical guide to the nuts and bolts of affiliate marketing. She goes into a lot of detail about different tools to use, etc.

1. More than just a fishing book, Molyneaux took me above and below the waves and into the halls of government where polcies were set that targeted people like the book's main character, Bernard Raynes. Molyneaux gives an intimate portrayal of the Bernard, whose English and Acadian French ancestors fished the Gulf of Maine since the 1600s, and depicts how that rich heritage has enabled Raynes to survive in the face of an antognistic political climate and resource scarcity. The book is beautifully written and contains lessons that go way beyond fishing.



2. Paul's a friend and some of this is familiar through conversations we've had and times we've lived through. We haven't seen each other for several years and just recently reconnected via email. As soon as I could I bought the book and have been reading it-it's like we are still talking and I've emailed him my first response;
   
   "It's like having a conversation with you-it's cool and spooky-the book is beautifully written-of course. The description of you and Bernard pulling up the fish with the seawater streaming over white knuckles was superb of course, of course.
   
   The dark water-all of it. I can't separate it from you and the line about living another man's memories you spoke to me and reading the book I'm living them too.

   Paul's style is so accessible and everyone in Maine should read this book. We all have a brother or uncle or cousin or sister or mother or grandparent that is just like one of the Raynes or like Paul or one of his boatmates. Everyone not in Maine will see human truth in the story as well. The last chapter Poets and Warriors is immediately recongizable to me-that was the period when we were warriors and poets watching this world we knew culminate and turn into something else.
   This book is important from an ecological standpoint-it reaffirms the human connection to our environment. There are generations of farmers who've lost the land and builders who've lost their craft-everything seems to erode, if we let it. Paul reminds us that the vast ocean has been depleted by our policies and inattention and lack of care for the human connections we have to our world.
   
   Buy it-read it-my friend has a voice that should be heard.



3. Molyneaux is a beautiful writer, and tells his story so honestly that it is a prize in my collection of books about commercial fishing. As a former commercial fisherman on the west coast, my eyes were opened to the similarity in the east coast struggles to hold onto a way of life.The fishermen themselves did not understand what they were doing to the fish stocks, and then the government(s) in the name of improving the situation, gave what was left to the corporations, are rapidly wiping out the small-scale fishermen, and the environmentalists, in their urgency to save fish, did not recognize that fishermen too are a species worth saving. That seems to be changing, that is fishermen and environmentalists are beginning to see their common interest. His next book, about aquaculture is great too.

1. As a pharmacist, I found the book to be very inaccurate. Dilantin has proven nothing short of miraculous for millions of epileptics for the past 65 years, and has proven useful for peripheral neuropathy and (to a very minor extent) bipolar disorder, but it has side effects that are often very unpleasant and is notorious for producing drug interactions.

   I believe that many alternative and off-label therapies have legitimate use, but this is a vanity publication that has about as much merit as supermarket tabloid advertising.

   I am grateful that people have not bombarded their doctors with requests for this "miracle" drug.

3. This is a remarkable story, a remarkable man, and a remarkable medicine. A Dr. first gave this book to me 14 years ago - it changed my life. Like Jack Dreyfus I lost interest in things I once enjoyed and like Jack Dreyfus I lost perspective and couldn't watch the news which is full of so much horror and sadness. People would tell me I needed to keep well informed, but it created panic attacks and I couldn't get it out of my mind. Drs. experimented with all kinds of medications that made me very ill and some that are habit forming nightmares. ONE INFORMED Dr. gave me this book and with Dilantin helped me get off all the "expensive, helpful medicines" that were making me worse. This book is written from the heart - just as the research was conducted. Thanks Dr. Roberts - Thanks Jack!!!



4. I find it interesting that Jack Dreyfus had his own severe anxiety / depression / insomnia cured almost immediately by use of Dilantin. I find it even more interesting that Mr. Dreyfus is STILL going strong at age 92 (yes, he turned 92 this year).
   
   It seems apparent that this particular reviewer did not fully read the book - or didn't understand it??? (In fact sounds like one of those in the "medical profession" whose very attitude has stonewalled legitimate extensive testing and education regarding this clearly remarkable medication). I say this as the doses recommended for use in this book are far below that used by epileptics and side effects at those levels have been very minimal. In fact, Dilantin is beginning to be thought of (in low dose formulas) as a component of antiaging medicine.
   
   I also find it amazing that there's an admission that "proven nothing short of miraculous for millions"... and yet is then immediately described as a very unsafe medication (???).
   
   Hmmm... who now seems to have a specific agenda here?
   
   Did this particular reviewer even bother to check out the huge number of studies and trials done on PHT (Dilantin)? Or was this more a matter of "don't confuse me with the facts"?
   
   A pharmacist specifically should have known that the fact is that PHT (Dilantin) has considerably fewer side effects and less serious ones than most of the more "modern" medicinces being pushed today. And at the doses recommended for non epileptic uses, those side effects are even much less of a problem. (At a well-looking age 92, it doesn't seem that the PHT / Dilantin has hurt Mr. Dreyfus to any noticeable degree)....
   
   What is even more ironic is that most educated people today know that most people in the medical profession obtain a significant amount of their "education" of pharmaceuticals from drug company sales reps (whose agenda is clearly to push the latest patented versions of whatever the "flavor-of-the-month" happens to be).
   
   Finally, Jack Dreyfus - nor ANY of his organizations - have ANY financial interest in Dilantin (PHT) in any form whatsoever. And his ongoing foundation (the Dreyfus Medical Foundation)? It is strictly a charitable medical organization.



5. I continually was fighting suicidal feelings and had gained 60 lbs in just over a year on prescription anti-depressants when I saw this book, A Remarkable Medicine Has Been Overlooked, by Jack Dreyfus, in Barnes and Noble and bought it in March 1998. I had just turned 48 years old.
   
   After reading the book I gave it to my psychiatrist, who read it and agreed to let me give low-dose Dilantin a try. I take low-dose Dilantin to this day, and by the time the first script needed renewal my family doctor agreed to prescribe it as I no longer was seeing a psychiatrist.
   
   Without Dilantin I don't know where I'd be today. Low-dose Dilantin has had only side-benefits for me. For instance, in addition to brightening my outlook with no other medications, it cured me of cold hands and feet, a lifelong problem, and I lost 50 of those 60 extra pounds easily. It also allows me to sleep a normal 7 to 9 hours a night instead of the 14-16 hours I had been sleeping for nearly a decade prior to finding out about low-dose Dilantin.
   
   Jack Dreyfus is one of my heroes. Thanks, Jack.
