5 comments about A Summer for a Lifetime: The Life and Times of George I. Purdy.
  1. Having lived in Japan for most of the past two decades I am in constant awe of those foreigners who preceeded me, and succeeded, in business, and in life. George Purdy has been one of the most influential foreigners in Japan for an awfully long time, 30 years before I came.

Mr. Purdy has great respect in both the foreign and Japanese communities in Japan, and with this book we can begin to capture a glimpse of just why he is so well respected.

As an entrepreneur in Japan, somewhat successfull, I have spent time thinking of the issues about what makes a person successfull. Financial success is not the same as being a success in life. Mr. Purdy has achieved both, and gives some thought as to what is success in life.

Thomas Caldwell, the author, has done a wonderful job of highlighting interesting events in the life of a most interesting person.

  2. This book was a very easy, pleasant read giving insight in a man who, not only was a success in business, but, a success in life as well.

George Purdy has a very, very solid reputation in Japan, still, even after all these years. His reputation had to be backed by some form of reality. This book was an excellent introduction to a very interesting person.

As one old Japan hand to another, have to say the writer, Mr, Caldwell has done a wonderful job of capturing the essense of one of the most important foreigners in Japan, for over 50 years.

  3. The story of a man and his love for the sea, is not only fascinating, but I lived it with him. His determination to overcome obstacles to be a part of the navy in times of peace and war is a living book. If you want adventure, achievements, and financial success, then read this book about a man that has done it all. Tom Caldwell's book is a tribute to George I. Purdy. Well done Tom.

  4. What a charming and uplifting book! George Purdy's "never give up" attitude comes across loud and clear. Honesty, perserverence and enjoyment of life are his "rules of the road." - it's an easy-to-read, educational and enjoyable book every parent should have his/her child read! Delightful!

  5. As George Purdy passed on recently it is worth bringing attention once again to this memoir. It is rare that a book ends too soon but that is the case with this tale. I assumed that there were many more tales to tell and would have been happy to keep reading.

  1. An interestingly well-written account of halocaust era jewish immigrant, Henry Sherwood, and his successful globe-trotting life as an American citizen. After being forced out of Germany and arriving in the U.S.A.at a young age he lived life to the full. If you enjoy biographies this is a good read.

1 comments about Strong in the Struggle: My Life as a Black Labor Activist (Voices and Visions).
  1. _Strong In The Struggle_ chronicles the life and activities of Lee Brown, black labor activist. His interest in unions started with a railroad job in Arizona, where worker solidarity reinstated a worker who had been fired unfairly. On returning to Louisiana, he became a labor leader for the dockworkers there.

He strongly felt that a fairer society required three things: increased trade unionism, racial integration, and Communism. Of course, back then that got him no end of trouble with racists and Red-baiters of all stripes. (He did end up in prison for three years for violating the Taft-Hartley act, which prohibited members of the Communist party from involvement with labor unions). However, later he expressed frustration because of racism and apathy in the union ranks, as well as a Communist party that had become more "intellectual" and theoretical than "involved with the grass roots".

Co-author Robert L. Allen documents the famous trial in which Mr. Brown refuses to answer the prosecutors' questions.

Recommended for anyone interested in labor or African-American history.
