  1. Excellent, inspirational and educational - "The American Dream in a Kilt" is a must read for mid-management, people interested in Scotland or Silicon Valley. It's an easy read with insight and emotional intelligence.

  2. An inspirational journey through the life of George D. Wells former Silicon Valley CEO. George is an example of what can happen to your life when you set your dreams high and dare to go after them with all your might.

  3. An excellent biography written in an entertaining and light-hearted way.
Includes fascinating accounts of the author's early years which parallel his very inspiring and successful career. It is always refreshing to find a top executive who is able to share his advice and anecdotes on becoming an admired and respected leader while at the same time striking a positive balance in his personal life. This book is truly educationally stimulating and full of indispensable advice on obtaining your goals and enjoying yourself every step of the way.
    -- A profoundly spirited read!!!!!

  4. The life journey of George Wells is an inspiration to all and showed that with integrity & a pure heart, you can achieve anything. He is an intelligent man that is smart enough to also follow his intuition, in business and in his personal life. We should all strive for that balance!
I know George's family will treasure this book and those of us in the business world will learn from his words of wisdom. George is the type of person that I would be proud to call a friend, so thank you for sharing him with us in this delightful book.

  5. I really enjoyed the book. I loved the way he took risks and how they paid off, especially as the risks related to wearing a kilt. Wearing the kilt as a means of communication and meeting new friends was both unique and insightful.

  1. Although this reviewer's background and education were scant preparation for it, my work brings me into regular contact with (mostly American) entrepeneurs whose lives are testimony to the power that possibility still holds in this country. One of them is the chairman of the board I serve with Overseas Council, Norm Miller.

Norm's 1996 self-told story is a thrilling read for me because of the honesty with which he describes his pilgrimage and the angle that experience has given to me from which to corroborate his narrative. It's the real thing.

Norm presided over Dallas-based Interstate Batteries' rise to prominence and big-time commercial success as 'America's number one replacement battery'. If the business' rise was something close to meteoric, the author's own path was shaped by numerous zigs and zags. Norm does not hide these. In fact, he believes that a tastefully framed 'full disclosure' approach to telling his story is the most accurate way to underscore the divine mercies that shaped a life (and more!) while a business was finding its way forward.

BEYOND THE NORM is an inspiring read, not because the flaws and defects have been airbrushed out but precisely because they've been left in. Number one, indeed.

  1. Lavender is an excellent writer and serious history scholar. This is an outstanding book, and well deserves a space on the book shelf of any serious student of the Central Pacific or Southern Pacific. I've had my copy for years, and I can assure you it is well dog-eared and tatered from heavy and frequent reference. Lavender's sources are thorough (although he did not access the huge archive of Huntington papers at Syracuse University) and his remarks in general correct and precisely on target. Of the three great Huntington biographies, (the others are Cerinda Evan's Collis Potter Huntington and Oscar Lewis' The Big Four), this is by far the best, though I highly recommend Evan's work as well. This is a must-have book on this subject.

  2. A fascinating look at one the great rail road builders. A man who was fundamental to building two transcontinental railroads, a major eastern railroad and the nation's premier shipyard. The book describes his achievements, failures, attributes and flaws. It also gives a vivid view of life in gold rush California and the later trials in building the Central Pacific through the Rockies. Although commissioned by the Huntington family, it seems to provide a balanced view of the man. His sometime questionable dealings are well presented, and explained within the context of a different era. If the book has a flaw, it is the very detailed explanations of the stock and bond manipulations. But overall, it is the story of one of the true builders of the 19th century.
