5 comments about Derek Jeter : A Yankee for the New Millennium.
- As the author of four books on young adolescents (including The Roller-Coaster Years and Parenting 911), I am thrilled to have a positive role model for children. Derek Jeter's behavior on and off the field can inspire young people, even those who are not Yankee fans. He is always respectful. (I understand he still calls Joe Torre, "Mr." Torre). When the rest of the team brawled with the Seattle Mariners, Jeter and his friend, Seattle shortstop, Alex Rodriquez, wisely stood aside. Jeter never blames others for his mistakes. His response is to work harder to improve. He is supportive of fellow players, even when they are struggling with their game. He has made a genuine commitment to children with his Turn 2 Foundation, donating both his time and resources. This book would make a wonderful gift for any young adolescent who dares to dream about the future.
- This is a great book if you love Derek Jeter. It was written by people who truely know the game of baseball, and has a lot of great pictures. I highly recommend it.
- I think that Derek Jeter is very good for little kids to look up to becuase he is a base ball player and that is one great job.You get to build your body more and more when your playing base ball its just great.
I think that Derek Jeter is very good to look up to and a great roll motle and if i were a guy i would want to be just like him. he is a very interesting to know about someone famouse and someone great!
- This book has great photos that are large and detailed (not a waste of space like some other books). They show a wide variety of situations, so if you are looking for particular things like I was (e.g., bat grip), it is very handy.
The text is gathered from Derek's peers and provides a great glimpse of what being around him must be like. Great book, especially for kids or older fanatics!
- I purchased this book for my daughter several years ago. She got the Jeter bug! I was impressed by this book and impressed by Derek Jeter, the man. He seems to be a genuinely good person on and off the field. His personal life and approach to the game is an example for what all ball players should strive for. He brings the finest qualities out in the game of baseball by his approach to the game. He is not flashy and does not draw attention to himself other than through his fine play on the field. I was impressed.

1 comments about Iron Man: The Cal Ripken, Jr. Story.
- I READ THE BOOK, IRON MAN: THE CAL RIPKEN, JR. STORY BY HARVEY ROSENFELD AS PART OF A SCHOOL READING ASSIGNMENT. IT WAS A PRETTY GOOD BOOK FILLED WITH INFORMATION ABOUT THE LIFE AND BASEBALL CAREER OF CAL RIPKEN, JR. IT TALKED ABOUT HIS EARLY CHILDHOOD AND WHEN HE PLAYED BALL AS A CHILD AND WENT ALL THE WAY THROUGH HIS PROFESSIONAL CAREER UP TO 1995. IT HAD AN INTRODUCTION IN IT WRITTEN BY HIS FATHER, CAL, SR. IT WAS A VERY GOOD BOOK AND I WOULD RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE WHO IS INTERESTED IN LEARNING ABOUT BASEBALL'S IRON MAN, CAL RIPKEN, JR.

1 comments about ¡ Sosa ! El héroe del jonrón.
- Sosa's determination, hard work and gratitude make for a great journey and a great read. Buy this for any young boys especially. They'll be out practicing (whatever sport or activity they happen to do) as soon as they put the book down.

2 comments about Jackie Robinson: Race, Sports, and the American Dream.
- This is a great book if you want to know more about Jackie. It has rare pictures inside of Jackie posing with fans. I originally bought this book for my Sports History class.
- Professor Joram Warmund is my Professor is my professor in History here @ LIU (NYC). This book shows and explains how important Jackie Robinson was and how his impact left a legacy on America. It also shows that Brooklyn was the epicenter of new change for the race issue in America. I never realized how important Jackie Robinson was until Prof. Warmund taught this book.

1 comments about Commy": The Life Story of Charles A. Comiskey (The Mcfarland Historical Baseball Library, 2).
- I'm a big White Sox fan, so I thought reading about the founder of the club would be interesting. Well I was so wrong.
Mr. Axelson is obviously a big fan of his topic. There is nothing in this book except what a great guy Comiskey was. Well that's all fine. But I wanted to read about the effort to place the new American League team in Chicago and the problems dealing with the National League team already in town, the building of Comiskey Park. Learn something about his family, especially his father the Alderman. All is covered in a few paragraphs and then we get back to how great a guy Comiskey was.The building of Comiskey Park is done in one paragraph, but I understand Comiskey was a great guy during it's construction.
Also this was written pre-Black Sox so nothing about that black eye to the great guy is mentioned. It is also written in a flowery some times overly descriptive style, which I think is due to the author being a newspaper man. By the way did I mention Comiskey was a great guy?
There is really little to learn here unless your interest is in baseball in it's very early years. And even then what you will mostly learn was the Comiskey was a great guy. Did I mention that Comiskey was a great guy?

1 comments about Pete Rose: A Biography (Baseball's All-Time Greatest Hitters).
- Pete Rose was one of baseball's greatest hitters, but his off-field actions cast a dark light on his achievements, leading to investigations into his gambling and a lifetime banishment from the game which even barred him from induction into the Hall of Fame. His story is told in Pete Rose: A Biography, a hard-hitting sports biography which presents the nature of his lasting legacy and his post-baseball life.

5 comments about You've Got to Have Balls to Make It in This League: My Life as an Umpire.
- MISS POSTEMA WAS AN UMPIRE FOR MANY YEARS IN THE MINOR LEAGUE AREA FOR MANY YEARS. THIS IS HER STORY AND MANY ARE VERY INTERESTING. THE BOOK ITSELF IS VERY EASY TO READ AND IS HUMOROUS, HONEST, WELL TOLD, AND OPINIONATED. PAM WAS A WOMAN TRYING TO CRACK THE SHOW IN A MAN'S WORLD. I GIVE HER ALOT OF CREDIT FOR STAYING WITH IT FOR SO LONG. I RECOMMEND THIS FOR ALL BASEBALL FANS WHO WANT A LOOK AT WHAT IS LIKE TO ATTEND UMPIRE SCHOOL, LIFE ON THE ROAD, GAME CONDITIONS AND ALL THE ABUSE AN UMPIRE ENDURES. A LINE DRIVE BASE HIT.
- My parents had Pam, as well as her then supervisor, Dick Nelson, over to the house for dinner during spring training in Arizona. She seemed like a nice person. However, I think her claiming Dick Nelson was a bad supervisor was unfounded. My dad was in the Air Force with Dick and we have known him for many many years as well as his being a frequent guest in our home during his umpire years. He was always extremely nice and very fair and although he wanted Pam to succeed sometimes people don't make it and it isn't always because of a bias.
- Somewhat of an interesting book, but only if you are a huge baseball fan like myself. I remember reading and hearing about Pam during umpiring years, which is why I got the book from the library when I saw it.
Pam must have enjoyed her years in the minors as she spent 13 years umpiring professionally, or maybe she just couldn't face life and the reality of getting on with her life. It would be a good book for those in HS or college thinking of becoming an umpire in the pro leagues. It sets you straight as the realities of life in the minors.
Pam also tells how she found out how Elvis really died.
- Written by the very first women to ever do this and i admire her for it and I remember her calling games. Great reading for any umpire. No 1 in my book
- I can only imagine the difficulties Pam must have faced.I got to admire anyone who wants to break into a gender biased occupation. I personally feel there is room in Umpiring,Refereeing(is that a word?)for women. They can be as blind as the men doing it now(just joking)Irregardles this is a very interesting book and not just on the baseball end of it but also on the struggles of womens equality.
