1 comments about The Literary Larrikan: A Critical Biography of T.a.g. Hungerford.
- Tom Hungerford is a wonderful Australian author who has combined incisive perceptive and descriptive skills over a writing career that has spanned most of his 90+ years.
So, how is it that more people have not heard of him? I am ashamed to admit that I had not heard of him either until a year or so ago. Since then I've managed to acquire copies of most of his published works (each of his published novels, and collections of his short stories as well as some of his poetry).
For those seeking to know more about the documented life, times and writings of Tom Hungerford, this is a valuable book. For those seeking to understand the man behind the author, this book will be of limited assistance. The voice of Tom Hungerford spans most of the 20th century. He was born just as Australia was still establishing its national identity (during World War I), saw active service in World War II, and has continued to contribute on many levels to Australia since then.
According to the author, Tom Hungerford chose not to be associated with the production of this book after initially supporting it. I think this book suffers as a consequence, and I hope at some stage a book adddressing more completely the life of Tom Hungerford is written. In the meantime, reading his own works gives a sense of the man and reading this book provides a chronological framework.
Tom Hungerford was the recipient of a Western Australian State Living Treasures award in 2004. He is now in his 90s and lives in Perth.
Recommended for anyone wanting to know more about the work of this wonderful Australian author.

1 comments about Katherine Mansfield: A Literary Life (Literary Lives).
- If you're new to Katherine Mansfield, this is a good book to start with. Smith opens some doors for the novice or scholar. You might want to buy Vincent O'Sullivan's recent anthology published by Norton to use as your reading copy of KM's works. It's easy to find Antony Alper's excellent full length biography. It's essential reading too. If you are serious about your reading, Alpers also edited her works (Oxford U Press), and it's worth tracking down a copy -- not just for the logical arrangement of the text, but for his excellent notes.
