1 comments about Biography: Peter O'toole - Acting Out.
- This video is from the Biography television series. It is roughly 45 minutes in length; my copy of the tape was very good. The format of the episode doesn't present any surprises to the veteran viewer of the series.
I don't have any quibbles with the quality of the tape or the subject of the episode; however, I felt that the episode's writers could have spent more time researching Peter O'Toole the man, than simply recounting his career; in fact, most of the information is easily available from several on line databases. That said, if you are looking for an introduction to Peter O'Toole's career, then this tape is perfect for you.

4 comments about Biography - Genghis Khan.
- Film is excellent....several known scholars in the field of Asian history are talking heads among the recreated battle shots, etc. An intro and voice-over by Peter Graves during the film provide enough info for someone embarking on a study of the Yuan Empire or the Mongol Empire.
- It was pathetically inaccurate. The sole source they cited was the Secret History, and they had a Professor of Asiatic studies from Columbia U for historical advisor; yet, even ignoring the usual 'they were vicious barbarians' slant, the piece was riddled with mistakes. The first thing I caught was a misquote from the Secret History citing the legend of the five brothers as a story about Chingghis's immediate family. After that I paid more careful attention. They did not mention his name 'Temujin' once but rather saying he was born 'Genghis'. How can they claim to be biography and not even mention the man's name? They went so far as to claim his wife and mother started the war between him and Jamuga out of jealousy over their gay love. Another glairing mistake was the when and why of invading the Song. They glossed over any political interaction as Genghis 'finding an excuse to go to war'. For an amateur historian like me to so easily spot as many mistakes as I did is pretty sad. A waste of money!
- How could history be put so simply like A&E does in every biography I bought about China and Asian history? I try to understand these works are for the general public, but the conclusion is that general public is being mislead with this kind of material. My first experience was with the Mao's biography, then with the one about Marco Polo. The worst is that I bought also the Pol Pot and Chiang Kaishek biographies and have not seen them yet.
The Gengis Khan biography is full of awkward commentaries with emphasis on a supossed bloody nature of the mongols. They were no bloodier than were the rest of societies that engaged on conquest, to say the europeans themselves. The Gengis Khan was more than strategist and a ruthless leader of hordes and tribes from Mongolia. There is no analisys about the rising of the Yuan dinasty that was created after the mongols took CHina and the cultural, historical and political implications of the east-west contact. The emphasis is put on extremely doubtful anecdotaries, that produces a sensasionalist account about the creator of the biggest empire of the world history.
- Some images used in this program are Japanese pictures from various periods. One of them is Prince Shotoku from 6th century in Japan and nothing to do with this program. I began to wonder what is correct and what is not. So, I stopped watching it.

5 comments about Biography - Josip Broz Tito.
- One of the people who influenced XX century most was certainly Josip Broz Tito. Loved by her friends and common jugoslav folk at least as much as hated by his enemies, this charismatic figure have chosen his way between superpowers to get the most for his people and himself. Description of him as a communist leader and dictator who made a major contribution for fall of communism is certainly quite true.
Putting someone's 88 years long life into 50 minutes biography, A&E mastered just fine. This biography should be seen by everybody, people who didn't know him, people who hated him, people who loved him, people who just lived under his rule, like myself. Everybody may find elements to support his feelings about Tito and this is why A&E did great job, too. One fact is not to doubt by anyone who knew about Tito: he was one of the greatest politicians of XX century. A&E showed what is material the legends are made of.
- Where do I start? I do not know. This limit of 1000 words that is posted is not enough to tell everything that needs to be told about the greatest leader & statesman that Yugoslavia and its people ever had, and never will again. Person that changed and touched our hearts will never be born again, since a man like him is born once every millenium. Leader to whom we should be thankful for everything we had. Greatest moments of our lives happened during his lifetime. He was everything that one nation can dream of its leader. With his charisma & smartness, he opened a door for Yugoslavia into the world, greatly respected by his frinds as well as his enemies. On his funeral there were 209 delegations from 127 countries of the world. Tell me one person in the history of the humankind that had that many statesmen on his/her funeral. NONE!! That alone tells you who he was as the leader, statesman, simply a man with a big heart who understood his people & vice versa. He will live in the hearts of true Yugoslavs forever. His masterpiece will never die, since he was larger than life itself.
AFTER TITO-TITO!! ....
- Very short and concise overview of the life and history of Josip Broz Tito, one of the most important leaders of the 20th century. The film consists of some great narrative and wonderful film pieces from Tito's life. Recommended for anyone wanting a good visual history of this great leader.
- The biography of Yugoslavian leader Josip Broz Tito could have been presented in many different ways, taking into account different literary portrayals of this truly great statesman of the 20th century. There is no doubt that Tito had a multitude of enemies, but the number of his friends was even greater.
I was a child when Tito died, but I witnessed the truly heartwrenching outpour of grief among common people of Yugoslavia - from Slovenia in the Northwest, to Macedonia in the Southeast (or as a Yugoslavian song says, From Vardar to Triglav, From Djerdap to the Adriatic). I will never forget that stunning sight. It is that much more sad that Tito has been much maligned by the radical nationalists, and even more sad that the common people who once cried for him now rejected the memory of him.
Tito is often portrayed as a communist - there is no doubt that he was the leader of the Yugoslavian communist party. But above all, Tito was a nationalist, fighting for the southern Slav peoples of the Balkan peninsula. Not many Westerners know that Tito never allowed Stalin to absorb Yugoslavia into his Eastern Bloc, or Warsaw Pact. Tito, along with Nehru and Nasser, was the founder of the Non-Aligned Movement.
The world, not just Yugoslavia, lost a great man on May 4th, 1980 at 3:05pm, when Tito succumbed to illness in a hospital in Ljubljana, Slovenia, just short of his 88th birthday. The world needs more leaders like him, leaders who truly strive to unite and spread peace. So, indeed, may he rest in peace.
- This was horrible. The biography was horribly basic and I learned absolutely nothing. You may as well read the paragraph entry introducing Tito on wikipedia, because this video showed the same scenes multiple times, there was random over dramatic music in the background for absolutely no reason, and there were a bunch of overgeneralizations with no backing.
