  1. This is probably the best biography of both Theo and Vincent Van Gogh ever written! It is very informative and has been extremely useful in my report on Van Gogh: The Artist. I'd recommend it to anyone needing extensive information on Vincent Van Gogh

  2. I must say, I found this book totally by accident at the Strand in NYC and it was so big, I had to have it shipped home. I am so grateful to the gods who led me to this masterpiece of a book. I had read other biographies on Vincent van Gogh, but Jan Hulsker is where every person interested in Vincent's art, life and his brother should begin. I felt like I was walking with Vincent and Theo through every day of their lives, understanding all the joys and pain, the disappointments and elation. Dr. Hulsker is THE authority on all things van Gogh and for every question you've ever had or happening you've wondered about, he has the answer... here in this thorough and easy-to-read book. He corrects us on every myth and misconception and breaks us of old habits we've all probably developed when thinking of van Gogh. Most important of all: Dr. Hulsker understood that Vincent and Theo were one person - without Theo there was no Vincent and without Vincent there was no Theo. I'd recommend following this book with the letters of Theo and Jo van Gogh-Bonger.

1 comments about Van Gogh on Art and Artists: Letters to Emile Bernard (Genius of Vincent Van Gogh).
  1. What an enlightening opportunity to be a fly on the wall reading letters from probably the most verbal of all the famous painters. Imagine, as a bonus, getting "the rest of the story" from the massive number of letters van Gogh wrote to his brother, Theo. This was an amazing labor to gift us who buy this book to learn what van Gogh thought about other painters who also became famous, how he painted, painting processes he engaged in, and sometimes what troubled him and how he spoke about his "episodes" to others in his circle. I felt I had secret access to van Gogh as I read his thoughts about relationships he had with other masters and his feelings about other painters in his time.

As a painter, I loved learning about van Gogh's painting technique, color choices, and thought processes. I learned first hand what van Gogh was thinking when he painted individual paintings I have seen many times, the ideas, the color combinations, the places he loved.

Even though I had read many books about van Gogh and many more that contained information about him, after reading this book, I felt I had an intimate knowledge of him, really knew him, even felt mentored by him.

You don't have to be a lover of art or artist to gain tremendous insight from this book. Anyone curious about people, interested in exploring the mind of a genius, and especially those interested in personality traits and individual psychology would find this book a treasure trove.

  1. I found this book very appealing. It touched on both his art and his emotional side. This might of been the happiest time of his life and it was all to breif. I tottaly recomend this book if you enjoy Vincent's works.

1 comments about Baby Einstein: El mundo de color de Van Gogh: Van Gogh's World of Color, Spanish-Language Edition (Baby Einstein: Libros con lenguetas).
  1. This was the first Baby Einstein product we have had experience with, after hearing raves about Baby Einstein music and videos from friends for years. I bought this to read to my 15month old baby, and unfortunately i was disappointed in the book because the text on each page was too long and did not engage the baby at all. I tried to read it to him 3 times and he would be a bit distracted, preferring to look around after the second sentence, but by page 3 he was reaching for another book and wanted nothing to do with this one. Maybe it was meant for older children?? I thought Baby Einstein products were meant for babies? This toddler at least was not interested. He does love his Baby Einstein MINI boardbook called Babies. That one did engage him easily, not sure if it is the simple one line text or the simple/varied types of pictures or both. He has enjoyed other longer texted books in Spanish and one in English (_We're going on a Bear Hunt_), but we had no luck with this one.
Hopefully he will like his "El Mundo de Color de Van Gogh" book when he is a little older.

1 comments about Vincent in Brixton (Nick Hern Books).
  1. Capturing the spirit of a young man on the verge of losing himself in his stung and strung emotions, Vincent in Brixton succeeds as a suggester, an appetizer of sorts, a brief encounter with van Gogh-before painting, before madness.
It is a slight read, an hour's worth, and dabbles healthily into not only van Gogh's nature, or his appreciation for melancholy, but others attraction to it as well.

Having lived in London already, Vincent is moving, on a whim, into the boarding house of Ursula Loyer, a widower who runs the house and a school with her young daughter Eugenie. Sam Plowman is the other boarder, fledgling artist and would be competition for Eugenie.
But the story turns up a notch when it takes an surprising turn, and gets into the meat of what van Gogh was about, a man unafraid of himself, to let flow his feelings and impulses. As his heart was forming, so was his art. This was a time before he was painting and in the play he first begins to find an emotional value in drawing. His appreciation for empty chairs, rain-soaked vagabonds and beaten up boots only appears after his life, lead in part by his vaunting emotional state, ceases being bourgeois-interested, and his heart breaks.
Vincent in Brixton is an illumination of a different man, with a different soul. Before Holland, loneliness, addiction and obsession and a revolution in expression immortalized him, he was a drifter like many others, following his heart and come what may...
