5 comments about Mother Teresa, Called to Love.
  1. "Mother Teresa, Called to Love" is a compelling look at the saintly woman who served as the world's conscience during much of the 20th century. The author, Maryanne Raphael, has captured a rare glimpse at one remarkable woman. When I finished the book I felt at peace."

  2. MOTHER TERESA, CALLED TO LOVE is a beautiful spiritual classic. Maryanne Raphael's powerful writing brings us on Agnes Bojaxhiu's life journey as she becomes Mother Teresa. Mother Teresa touched all of our lives in her efforts to bring peace, beginning with a smile, and inspired millions to care and act in behalf of the suffering and needy. After reading Maryanne Raphael's passionate, heartfelt book, I renewed all of my spiritual commitments. MOTHER TERESA, CALLED TO LOVE, will continue to inspire many generations to come and will keep Mother Teresa's Call to action alive. Taia Chard, Chairman ABI Humanitarian Foundation

  3. Mother Teresa, Called to love is the best book I have ever read about Mother Teresa. Author Maryanne Raphael worked as a Co-Worker of Mother for many years and Mother gave her permission to write this book. It is easy to read, full of intimate interesting details about the life of one of the most holy people who lived during our lifetime. Those who knew Mother Teresa claim to feel her spirit in the book. It is an inspirational work of art. A very special biography.
I would recommend it to anyone who is depressed or bored, feeling sorry for themself or lost. Reading this book you feel like you have spent quality time with a saint. I highly recommend it.

  4. I have read many biographies of Mother Teresa. Some of them had too much information and were not in chronoligical order and confused me. Mother Teresa, Called to Love was easy to read and very interesting. I found it inspirational. I recommend it to anyone who wants to know about Mother Teresa and her great unconditional love for our world and all its people.

  5. A little depressing, and if you are the hughest of her fans, it will disturb you. I still think very highly of her. And hey, it's good to know we're all human.... Even Mother Teresa! God bless her, she did what she did even with a heavy heart.

1 comments about The Road from Babylon: The Story of the Sephardi and Oriental Jews.
  1. Because most of the Jews in the USA today are Ashkenazim (descended from the Jews of Eastern Europe), I knew very little about the Sephardic Jews until I read this book many years ago. Since then, I have learned that the FIRST Jews to arrive in the Americas were Sephardic, many of them fleeing the Spanish Inquisition.

"The Road from Babylon" traces the history of the Sephardim from the Babylonian Captivity (hence the title) to the present day (or at least to 1985, when this book was published.) According to the text, "Sephardic" orignally referred to the Jews who fled Spain in 1492, but is now applied to "Jews whose ancestors lived in the Balkans, Asia Minor, North Africa, and all round the Mediterranean in the Near and Middle East." (P.1) We should also note that the majority of Jews in Israel today are Sephardim, descended from Jews who fled persecution in the Arab countries after Israel was founded in 1948. (121,000 left Iraq in 1951 -- see p. 231.)

In terms of format, the book is well-written and researched, and includes two sections of B&W photos, showing Sephardic communities, synagogues, and traditional dress down through the centuries.
