1. This book is a nice overview of the work and life of Matisse. There are many beautiful and brilliantly described colorplates. It is a complete overview of his work. It also makes a beautiful coffee table piece that may inspire conversation.

   I reasoned that because the author choose to feature a later piece by Matisse on the cover the book might emphasize his later work. But when I got the book his later work was only briefly talked about and only 2 of the colorplates were after 1940s.

   Overall it is a nice book to get a sense of Matisse, his work and his life.




2. Matisse did some good interior pictures but many run-of-the-mill nudes and this book has way too many of those

1. The incomparable Janet Flanner writes this book with such wit and astute observation of men and their creations. Janet Flanner was also known as Genet. She was a journalist, author, and even novelist whose personal life was far more fascinating than any of her books. She brings the same determination to explaining men and their monuments whether they are statues or buildings or whatever creation.

1. As an artist who loves to paint and cook, this book really captures everything that i possible would love to take me to the south of france. Its beautiful colaboration of matisse paintings and tastes of recipes, really inspires one to want to paint a colourful table for dining. The recipes aren't exactly the normal cuisine you would desire to serve everyday however the colours and textures of foods play with those in his decorative work. Its just quite an inspirational book for those who love to master a composition like matisse did - my husband bought this book for me just because he knew i love matisse and i love to cook. Its a colourful book which you want to pick up and flip through just to take you to another place another time affecting all your senses and memories. Enjoy!
