  1. I was looking for information on the lamp base design, but it only covers the glass portion.

The examples are beautiful and the level of detail is very professional. You could build one of the lamps easily from the high quality drawings, that should be the standard emulated by all other stained glass books.

5 comments about Frank Lloyd Wright's California Houses (Wright at a Glance Series).
  1. The book is so specific that just by reading it you could build the exact same house on your own in no time! Extensive info on all the residences including furniture set-ups. Lots and lots of quotes from the master himself. Descriptives will take you on a virtual reality tour.

  2. "Frank Lloyd Wright's California Houses," by Carla Lind, is one of a series of "mini-books" by the author, each of which focuses on a particular facet of this great architect's work. This volume focuses on a remarkable group of homes designed by Wright between 1917 and 1927.

Like other volumes in this series, this book combines a brief but informative text with a wealth of full-color photos. Lind also includes a bibliography, a chronology, black-and-white historical photos, and sidebar quotes from various sources.

The photos of the California houses capture many interior and exterior details. These marvelous homes reflect the spirit of the pre-Columbian civilizations of Mexico and Central America; in fact, they look like modern versions of ancient Mayan temples. It is amazing to look at the patterned concrete blocks, the innovative use of glass, and the other distinctive features of these homes.

Wright's California homes are majestic, yet inviting buildings that have a timeless beauty and grace to them. This little book is a wonderful tribute to these great homes.

  3. the lack of floor plans of engineering drawings makes this more of a fanzine for the textile block houses. nice photos and text though. look elsewhere for informaiton useful to designers, students or architects.

  4. These little books are pretty much a joke. Not much information or photos (it is a tiny, thin book.)

  5. I'm a semi-retired architect from the mid west and while in CA, I took the time to look at Wright's "Textile Block" houses, it was worth the trip
I had met Wright many years ago and had always liked his creative approach, that gives you an idea of my age
The "Textile Block" houses are in varying states of repair and disrepair and are not accessible, except from the street
The book fills in some of the gaps and I wish that it was in a larger scale and had more
The color is welcome since a lot of Wright's work is often seen only in black and white
I'm going to buy a 2nd copy for my son

5 comments about Frank Lloyd Wright's Martin House: Architecture as Portraiture.
  1. As a owner of dozens of books about Wright and having spent countless hours learning about Darwin Martin this book is an extraordinary glimpse of not only the Client relationship but of the enormous growth of Buffalo business at the turn of the century. The quality of each photo is worth the purchase price alone

  2. As an Owner of FLW's Davenport House, Architect, and Wright Researcher, I found this to be the finest recent book on Wright. The insights into the development of the design, client relationship, Wright,s letters, the extraordinary quality of the photographs, the quality of the writing and the exquisite physical quality of the book make this an exceptional book. This book is a sheer pleasure to read, immersing one's self into the thinking of Wright as he deals with a nearly unlimited budget, a supportive client, and the usual challenges of getting a building built.

  3. There is much to be recommended in Quinan's exploration of Frank Lloyd Wright's Martin House. The book vividly illustrates the tangled-up dynamics of client/architect relations through a fascinating selection of letters, and it thoroughly documents the evolution of the house's design from concept sketch to finished product. Quinan has assembled a wealth of analytic drawings, comparison drawings with other Wright houses, details, original working drawings, period photographs, and construction photographs. There are few such thorough studies of any house in print.

Wright's enormous talent and equally outsized ego shines through the entire work. Indeed it's in the smaller moments that one realizes how relentless his own mythmaking really was - for instance a cable in which Wright answers his patron's request for 26 items of furniture, with "Not yet designed on paper -will be soon." It conjures an image of confident Wright bringing the design complete out of the rarified air of his genius, like Mozart writing out symphonies in one pass.

But unfortunately Quinan seems to have fallen under this spell as well. While a provocative concept, Quinan's concluding discussion of "architecture as portraiture" really draws little further insight into Wright, the house, or the client. The book too quickly rests its case on the aesthetic merits of the house without challenge, and doesn't seem to consider the possibility that the house may be anything but a total masterpiece. By the end of the book Quinan has documented what might be considered as failures of the house - from typical cost overruns, delays, to more serious client dissatisfaction and eventual abandonment of the house - but these are treated as merely historical accident. That the evidence could be read differently is a testament to the thoroughness and inclusiveness of Quinan's work.

  4. This book puts flesh on the bones of Brendan Gill's observation that for most of Wright's clients, working with Wright was one of the highpoints of their lives. Reading the book was entertaining and instructive, as well as inspiring.

Martin's rise to the very top of American business is portrayed with sympathy and insight, as is his continued search, beyond that, for a sense of security and fulfillment. Wright's immense talent is granted full respect, but his towering ego and his insouciant disregard for all things practical are also presented fully and fairly.

The relationship between these two compelling figures is presented with drama and flair. I felt as though I had spent time in their company. As Martin's career wound down and he died, I felt bereft. The history of the house after his death was shocking. What a great thing that people have come together to rescue it and restore it to its former grandeur.

At least once a year, I make the three-and-a-half-hour drive from my home to Wright's Wyoming Valley School, which sits vacant some five miles south of Taliesin. I walk around the school, peek in the windows, and feel Wright's presence under the stunning cantilevered roof of the entryway as I look out from under it and across the highway at the rolling hills of southwestern Wisconsin that so captivated Wright. This book gave me a similar feeling of closeness to Wright. It is a magnificent contribution to our understanding of Wright and his clients.

1 comments about Frank Lloyd Wright's Furnishings (Wright at a Glance).
  1. "Frank Lloyd Wright's Furnishings," by Carla Lind, is one in an excellent series of "mini-books" about the work of this great architect. This volume is devoted to the various items that went inside the houses designed by Wright. The book reveals Wright to be not only a skilled architect, but also a master of interior design.

This book contains many of the praiseworthy features of other volumes in the series: a concise text by Lind, a treasury of wonderful full-color photographs, and an interesting series of sidebar quotes from Wright and others. The book covers many topics: bedroom furniture, dining room chairs, office furniture, lighting fixtures, cut stone decorative panels, and more. Lind also makes mention of some of the craftspeople who collaborated with Wright on these furnishings. Overall, this little book is a fine tribute to the work of an architectural visionary.

  1. The photos fill about 58 straight pages with only a few taking up less than the full page. At the back there's 6 pages with miniture sized versions of the photos in the book with an accompanying informational couple of sentences. The photos are excellent with most being exterior shots but a few of specific furniture items, about 5 of chairs. There's a 12 page text only introduction that does a nice overview of the subject. I'm not sure why anyone makes a color photo book of FLW buildings that isn't 11" or larger but this is one sweet book. It's the quality of the photos and the full use of most of the pages with photos with no white paper borders to shrink the photos. It's a nice compliment to a big FLW photo book collection. Not essential, but pleasant.

1 comments about Quilts in the tradition of Frank Lloyd Wright.
  1. This comprehensive book of quilt patterns using the stained glass window designs of Frank Lloyd Wright is a treasure. As a quilter and stained glass craftswoman, this book is a dream come true. The extensive explanations which accompany each design are easy to understand; the step-by-step illustrations make these complicated designs feasible for anyone. These deceptively simple-looking geometric designs make beautiful quilts (I've seen them in quilt shows), wallhangings, windowcoverings or they could be used to try your hand at stained glass. Jackie Robinson really did her homework, and her resulting book is one I use often.

  1. Oustanding commentary, well researched and insightful. The text here is mighty different from other commentaries on Wright, and feels much more substantive. Ony con: not enough images + some floorplans are reproduced too small to read clearly. - not a photo overview, a study on the man.

  2. This is a great book, not only as a reference for FLW's work, divided into sections of building type, containing hundreds of great photographs and drawings of his works (about 20 on Fallingwater alone), by which you can really get to know his work in detail. Because it's so visually rich, it is also a reference for constrution techniques and details (and, as you know, FLW is a very echletic architect). The text is very well written and covers everything related to each work, like clients' reviews, technical specifications, the story of the building, and so forth. I recommend it to anyone interested in architecture and FLW.
