1 comments about Frank Lloyd Wright to 1910: The First Golden Age.
  1. This book is truly one of the first significant books on Wright. Some of Manson's conclusions have since been proven wrong since publication, but every author who has written about this period has to have addressed Manson's work.

An essential part of any FLW book collection.

3 comments about Truth Against the World: Frank Lloyd Wright Speaks for an Organic Architecture.
  1. Truth Against The World is a must for anyone interested in understanding Wright's philosophy of Organic Architecture. It is such a great resource because, unlike the thousands of other books that were written about Wright, Truth Against The World is a view of the famed architectural philosophy through the genius himself. You do not get a third person interpretation about Wright and his philosophy; instead you read and hear about it in his own words. The end result is a greater depth of understanding not only of the Organic philosophy, but of arguably one of the world's greatest architect of all time.

  2. In addition to being a fun read, it is a great source for Frank Lloyd Wright quotes! Recommended for any serious Wright fan.

  3. After reading (the transcript of) his speeches in this book, I'd have to admit that I was impressed by his ability to insult - gracefully :P... The book contains his speeches on several topics, and I find his view on architecture and democracy most inspiring.

The greatest reward one can get after reading his book is not (merely) to know more about the architect and his view; but really to look at architecture and the world from a new perspective. His view is largely in agreement with that of Lao Tze and Japanese Architecture. All the principles are not rules to be followed or imitated, but a 'way' which one uses to interpret what he senses. I believe that's how he's able to shake design out of his sleeves!

And it's ironic that some of my friends studying architecture grow weary of me, an Economics major, since I am practically quoting him all the time and challenging their views! :P

1 comments about Frank Lloyd Wright: Interiors and Furniture.
  1. Frank Lloyd Wright began designing furniture over 100 years ago and yet this is the only comprehensive book on his 75 years of work. The book offers contemporary and historical views of many Wright interiors featuring the furniture in the original context for the most part. Much of this furniture has now been removed from the houses. Several of these pieces are on view in museums but much of it went into private collections. The range of views of the furniture is unique to the kind of book that Heinz has become well-known for. He finds views that can show features and arrangements of parts that other photographers seem to be blind to. When Heinz includes more than one example of a chair, either by using two chairs of the same design but faced front and side, or by including several designs [as in the Dana House] or with the designs of others [with Mackintosh, Stickley and the Greene brothers] they tell more than any text or caption could. The large page format is also helpful in showing the detail of each example. The types of wood and grain directions as well as finishes and textures assists in the analysis of the work. Heinz even goes outside the title definition of the book and includes associated examples of Wright's work as the chapter on rugs and textiles shows well. This may be the only concentration of Wright's textile designs. This is refreshing, to see the originals. in light of the "interpretations" that are now in the marketplace confusing the issue and the real genius of Wright's work. Interiors and Furniutre is a great companion book to Heinz's Glass Art which was issued at the same time and by the same publisher as this volume. This will be the definitive work for many years to come.

5 comments about Richard Meier Architect, Vol. 1 (1964-1984).
  1. Do not confuse this Monacelli Press book with the latest Rizzoli book by the same name. This one is an "artsy cofee table book" with slightly out-of-focus artsy black and white photos of a limited selection of his projects, including some of his earlier houses as well as some of his latest works. Large two page photographs are shown, together with 3 or 4 smaller ones per project, in lieu of a more comprehensive exposition of their work. If you are looking for information on their current work or design ideas check out the Rizzoli books instead.

  2. This 3rd in a series monograph by Rizzoli is a must-have addition to any serious architectural book library or to fans of Richard Meiers work. The numerous color photos are top rate, and together with a large number of drawings give a thorough overview of one of the top designers of today. The many photos in particular attest as to the successful completion of previously anticipated projects which have been in the pipeline, while new drawings herald new masterpieces to come.

  3. The Book is Great. If you love the style of Richard Meier, you sure would love this book too.

  4. Only ISBN: 1580930611 or ISBN: 1580930441 published by the Monacelli Press on 304 pages as an exhibition catalog with beautiful only B&W photos and drawings (many 3D) and minimal text.
    FROM FRONT FLAP:
Over his thirty-five-year career Richard Meier has produced an internationally recognized body of work that reinterprets and recovers the ideals of modernism. With the completion of the landmark Getty Center in Los Angeles, Meier's distinct vision has emerged as architecture that is truly for our time. This catalog, accompanying a major exhibition organized by The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (and traveling throughout the world), beautifully documents Meier's career with exquisite duotone photographs and the architect's own drawings, most of which have never been published.
Twenty-five of Meier's masterworks are featured, including the Smith House in Darien, Connecticut; the Douglas House, on the shores of Lake Michigan; the Museum for Decorative Arts in Frankfurt; the Canal+ Headquarters in Paris; the Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona; and the Getty Center. Current projects, including federal courthouses in Islip, New York, and Phoenix, Arizona, and the Church of the Year 2000 in Rome, are also presented.
A collection of insightful essays and commentaries by, among others, noted scholars Kenneth Frampton and Jean-Louis Cohen and architect Stan Allen illuminates various formal, theoretical, and practical issues at work in Meier's ever-evolving approach to the art of architecture. An extensively illustrated chronology of built and unbuilt work completes this first volume to document the entirety of Meier's extraordinary oeuvre.
